C.L.A.W.S. comes to Dark Entries with a new ripping LP, Splat City II. C.L.A.W.S. is the solo project of musical luminary Brian Hock, who has been a key figure in the Bay Area underground for over two decades via his involvement in projects like Bronze and The Vanishing, as well as helming the record labels Squirrels on Film and Immortal Sin. With C.L.A.W.S., Hock takes on the dancefloor, picking up cues from the Hague’s Giallo-dipped electro, the skewed minimalism of Chicago acid, and the mind-rending forays of San Francisco post-punk icons like Chrome and Tuxedomoon. Following 2019’s inaugural Splat City EP, Splat City II continues to map the psychogeography of a metropolis both alien and immediately recognizable, one where life is cheap, but so are the thrills. Previously released on Squirrels on Film in digital-only format, this expanded vinyl edition of Splat City II features two new cuts.

Franck Roger has been cooking up timeless, deep sounds for decades and right now he is in a superb run of form. Seasons Limited is where he lands next with more of his signature sounds. ‘Exodus’ opens with a fat, warped bassline and far-sighted chords that hark back to early Detroit. ‘Sokette’ is much more dusty and minimal, and again has echoes of artists like Omar-S from the Motor City. ‘Push It’ is a more elastic groove with some aching vocal hooks and diffuse chord work to make this perfect for the late-night sessions.

French deep house don Franck Roger returns to his tracky house roots with this latest drop on Seasons Limited. Kicking off is ‘Mind Games’, a swirling, peak-time house seducer built for late night floors and on the flip, ‘I Can Feel Ur Love’ stays deep but has a subtle skip to the kicks, while molten chords are draped over the beats and subtle vocal swirls marble the mood. ‘Gerkin Moods’ pays tribute to the legend Larry Heard, not just in title. It’s got real emotional depth and a deeply cosmic atmosphere.

Neurovision is a new Icelandic electro supergroup that channels the coldness of their homeland into these icy and futuristic new cuts on Helena Hauff’s Return to Disorder, all with hints of masters of the form like Dopplereffekt. ‘Driving To Burgertown’ begins with a whirring of machine madness, squelchy lines, trippy melodic cascades and snappy drum breaks. ‘Animal Flow’ then layers up sheet metal textures with dark and dehumanised vocals to make for a gritty post-punk vibe. ‘Lunar Cycling’ has a happier energy thanks to the crystalline arps up top and the snappier, surging kicks. Last of all is ‘Neurolab,’ a Kraftwerkian style banger laced up with layers of busy synth progressions.

Zorlok Compressor is a new project from Legowelt. Forged from dark wave rave – acidhall – dubstep (not the drop-bro EDM trash), electro – oldschool jungle – digidub – bass and whatever flies with that. Pushing the sound back into underground territories with a raw live energy. No mundane safe humdrum wallpaper club music or overproduced clean perfect stereo plastic sound but stuff to create temporal rifts in time & space on your dancefloor and in your mind. These songs mostly started from the more intense later zones of Legowelt’s live performances — though these often start with ‘lighter’ electro, Italo disco, techno, acid pieces etc. it often flows into the sound of Zorlok Compressor.
