Silicon Scally – Dormant [CPU01011011]

SILICON SCALLY - Dormant

Silicon Scally is the most prolific of Finlow’s alias projects, and on Dormant, the third Silicon Scally release for Sheffield’s Central Processing Unit, Finlow constructs four pieces of thrillingly futuristic broken-beat electro. These tracks never stand still, their little cells of synth and percussion always evolving. When combined with some stomping drum programming, the final result is an EP which has that rare balance of endless danceability and genuinely innovative production. It’s the sound of a master creator letting loose while also managing to keep everything in the pocket, a marvel of moving parts.

Turk Turkleton – Hive Mind EP [LOP13]

TURK TURKELTON - Hive Mind

Back in December 2019, Lunar Orbiter Program added Turk Turkleton to its roster via a fine split EP. Now they’ve given the mysterious artist a chance to shine via a debut solo EP. It’s a quietly impressive affair containing four fine cuts, all of which boast stupendously sturdy drums and tons of intergalactic electronics. Our pick of a very strong bunch is ‘Rock It’, a throbbing peak-time workout smothered in undulating acid lines and razor-sharp electronic riffs. That said, there’s plenty to set the pulse racing elsewhere across the EP, including chunky, funk-fuelled opener ‘Safe’ and rumbling Drexciya-esque closing cut ‘X-Statione’.

Aaron Maple – Awesome Orientalists From Europa Vol. 3

Awesome Orientalists From Europa is an edits project dedicated to awesome music and new politics. Inspired by record labels and DJs that specialise in reissuing ‘world’ music, A.O.F.E. turns the tables on the perception of exoticism by rediscovering obscure and forgotten western dance floor tracks. The music published in the project fantasises about the foreign, tribal and oriental, but was in its whole created in the west, for the west. The third release on the project features three edits by Aaron Maple.

All profits from this release are donated to NGOs that fight Islamophobia, antisemitism and racism in Europe.

ASC - Loop Research

Suburban Knight – Suburban Knight [DTRV004]

SUBURBAN KNIGHT - Suburban Knight

James Pennington is the Detroit techno talent who records as the Suburban Knight and has done since the middle of the eighties. He’s got plenty of mini-classics to his name such as ‘The Groove’ and ‘Art of Stalking’ and now he is back with what amounts to his first solo record in over a decade having previously worked with Inner City and Underground Resistance. Here he offers scintillatingly soulful techno on ‘Inner City’, which comes with a deeper and more quickened 207737 edit. Reverse the record and you’ll find ‘Species’, an intergalactic techno trip on bumping beats. ‘Intel Bombs’ (feat Ray 7) closes out with intense drum work and turbocharged stabs.
