Shifted Phases – The Cosmic Memoirs Of The Late Great Rupert J. Rosinthrope [TRESOR196LPX]

Tresor Records reissue the sole output from Shifted Phases entitled “The Cosmic Memoirs Of The Late Great Rupert J. Rosinthrope”. Initially released in 2002, soon after James Stinson passed away, this LP plays a mysterious and compelling role in the Drexciya journey. While other records of Drexciya and related projects have received numerous reprints and editions, The Cosmic Memoirs… has remained out of print since its release. This rarity leaves it more open to interpretation with its place in the Drexciyan storm series, as it became increasingly hard to find and underexplored. This reissue does not merely close the loop on Tresor’s reissue series of the Drexciya catalogue but brings Shifted Phases to fresh ears more than other records.

Richard Brook – Thira Traks [NN03]

NOUN welcomes the UK-based veteran, Richard Brook. He opens the EP with “Caldera V” an emotional breaky workout with an acidic switch halfway through. The unpredictable rhythms and contrasting melodic elements are reminiscent of the golden Sheffield days. On the flip-side “Skaros” is a straight acidic workout with sinister overtones and a steady groove that will keep the dancer glued to the floor at all times of the night.

VA – Music In Motion [UAR013]

Norm Talley’s Upstairs Asylum label only arrived in 2021 but is already up there with the great Motor City imprints. The boss has been busy putting together a trio of new EPs for the first half of 2023 that showcases a wealth of Mid-West talent. House hero Boo Williams kicks off this one with his typically tight drum programming and party-starting synth work on ‘Tickin Clock.’ Eric Johnson keeps it raw, deep and loopy on ‘Melodic Gruv’ then Reggie Dokes brings his signature Atlanta house sound to ‘Mother’s Child’ with its melancholic lead sax and ‘End of Time’ is a broken beat bliss out.

VA – Raw Viz-Shun EP [UAR012]

Upstairs Asylum Recordings is one of the many seminal Detroit labels run by local legend Norm Talley. It’s right in the middle of a busy run right now with no fewer superb run with three new EPs all dropping in quick succession. This one is a split EP with US duo Solid Gold Playaz taking care of the a-side. As always with this pair, their sounds are deep and dusty house with exquisite melodies tugging at the heart. On the flip, Gari Romalis steps up with the slick percussive skip of ‘Detroit After Dark’ then ‘Panties’ from Brian Neal brings jacked up analogue groves that lean into techno with a big fat bassline.

Legowelt – The MidiVerb Chalice [AXV01]

“The MidiVerb Chalice” is a new, entrancing mini-album poured out from the mind and soul of Danny Wolfers. Here he commands an arsenal of synthesizers and sound artifacts to guide us through the halls of a feverish supernatural rave, weaving together spellbinding sounds and hexing the hordes of EDM. Do you care to sip from the Chalice of MidiVerb? Awaiting you on the other side is a world of kaleidoscopic and hypnotizing techno with an esoteric soul. It only takes a small dose of Danny Wolfer’s concoctions to induce a state of total entrancement.

bijū – Land of Abundance [SOT011]

“bijū arose from the need to explore the intersection of machine and body. The need to blur the boundaries between dehumanized electronic sound and the natural environment. Its selection is a constant search between minimalist and dense, dynamic and slow, sharp and blurry sounds. The album presents strength of vision in artist’s style and that is aesthetics of dystopian future, where slow motion martial marches meet ghostly rituals, cleverly blended with synth melancholy enriched by echoes of psychedelia and industrial rawness. An attempt to reach the undefined emotions between commotion and anger, sublimity and thrill, which, along with grief and hatred were brought by the war in his homeland in Ukraine. As part of the Warsaw based Ukrainian collective SUMISH wants to strengthen interactions between people through synergies, exchange of vision and knowledge, building bridges between the migrant community and local society through the different creative disciplines. Author of the program Gnostic Methods, dedicated to slow-rolling and experimental electronic music – every month on Radio Kapitał.”

Francois Dillinger – Minus 40.715921 [ECU006]

Francois Dillinger brings his futuristic visions to this classy new EP on EC Underground. It finds the sonic sculptor kick off with a warped bassline underpinning an eerie and slow motion electro cut on The Pilgrimage. Tangential is another snaking rhythm with mysterious pads and bouncing bass that makes for a truly original vibe. ‘Message Failed To Send’ has a hint of Kraftwerk retro-ism to its snappy snares and talk box vocals then ‘When It Was Free’ classes down with a gritty mix of celestial charm and deep space unknown. These are next level sonics as always from Dillinger.

VA – Various V [030LP008]

030303 Records presents the fifth Various artist compilation, featuring a variety of acid sounds that transcend the boundaries of genres. Sounds inspired by Chicago, West coast The Hague, Malta acid and/or Cornwall UK. Caramel Chameleon kicks off with an epic cut, one that will appeal to fans of Roy of the Ravers. Perseus Traxx, Raving Kid and RAG aka Steven Brunsmann follow suit with acid on a deeper tip, with the latter adding a heavenly soulful touch to it. And how great it is to see American producer Korre return to the label with a wonderfully spaced out introspective cut. Also standing out is Endfest’s heavy electro/acid take on one of the most obscure mysteries ever to come out of Detroit: Shari Vari. Dwaalgast & De Beer Uit Allekmaar aka Cosmic Force deliver the last track before the lights go on – the aptly named A Wave Goodbye has a distinctive, bouncy westcoast-sound-of-Holland feel to it.
