Black Merlin – Kosua [IOTG005]

Back in 2015 George Thompson AKA Black Merlin started a deep love affair with the remote island of Papua New Guinea. After his first album ‘Hipnotik Tradisi’, released on Island Of The Gods; George was intrigued to find a place drenched in culture and untouched by the western world. In 2016 George planned his first solo expedition, venturing out to meet the Kosua Tribe. Over the course of the next two years George would record the sounds of the Kosua people. From their daily lives, ancient dance customs and wildlife. During one of these trips he spent 14 days alone in the jungle, getting in and out of the Mount Bosavi crater and further 3 days inside recording and filming his experience. These recordings and experiences formed the basis of his second album, Kosua.

Sone Urbia – Sone Urbia [LP16]

Sone Urbia is a collection of improvisations recorded live during the period of 2011-15. A grainy meditative voyage into layers of field recordings, old sampled records, synthesizers, acoustic and non acoustic instruments. This album works as a mixtape separated in two sides, two journeys; two soundscapes.

Jungle By Night – Livingstone [ND003]

JUNGLE BY NIGHT - Livingstone

This is the 5th album by the nine-piece instrumental collective from Amsterdam, Jungle by Night. After almost a decade of heating up dancefloors across the globe, Jungle by Night have reached manhood. In the process of creating their 5th album, the nine-headed collective melted years of passion, friendship, and influences from krautrock, dance, jazz, afrobeat together into new instrumental prose, fluently speaking the language of their instruments. The band is an oddball ensemble within its own cosmos. A danceable and thundering live-act, connecting with crowds like no other, with beaming fun and energy along the way.

The Scorpions & Saif Abu Bakr – Jazz, Jazz, Jazz [HABIBI009-1]

Habibi Funk co-founder Jannis Stuertz first came across “the Holy Grail of Sudanese funk”, Saif Abu Bakr and The Scorpions “Jazz, Jazz, Jazz”, while browsing eBay listings a few years back. His interest piqued, he took a trip to Sudan to track down the musicians who had made a ridiculously rare LP that was changing hands for thousands of pounds online. Some four years later, his wish to reissue the set has finally come through. It was originally recorded in Kuwait in 1980 and brilliantly joins the dots between American funk, soul and rhythm and blues, traditional Sudanese vocals and rhythmic arrangements, and even a dash of Congolese soukkous. It’s the first full album Habibi Funk has reissued, and with good reason: it’s near perfect from start to finish.

Life In Sodom – The Stains [MNQ098]

Conceived by vocalist Gerrie Brand, the band Life In Sodom was starting out as performance art, and quickly became more as Gerrie surrounded himself with some of the best musicians from the club and art scene in South Florida, including Mystic Bill, who was playing the guitar with the band in the early stages. Originally self-released in 1991, the single ”The Stains” became an underground club hit and charted on many college radio stations, in both the extended and the original version. The single was distributed as a hard to get promo only release. The repress contains also the title-track of the single “Phantasmagoria” – another cult tune for early 90’s goth djs – originally released in 1992 and a friendly dancefloor cut of the title-track by Alessandro Adriani.

Umwelt / Ryan James Ford – Untitled [PTCH09]

Repitch Recordings presents another small collection of club-ready electronic creations. This time around, the label welcomes french veteran and New Flesh / Rave Or Die founder Umwelt, sharing the platter with Canada-born Berlin-based young master Ryan James Ford. Led by their mutual love for saturated analog percussions, massive kick drums, and relentless beats, the two producers find common ground while retaining their respective distinctive approaches. Umwelt’s much more electro-oriented excursions style relentlessly acidic basslines alongside epic synth pads and distorted polyrhythms, while Ford’s side connects flows more down the stream of contemporary techno, deep and drone-laden as it is.

Mark Hand – Under the Winter [SLPVNL008]

Serbia’s Soul Print Recordings returns after a year away, with four pieces of beautiful and emotive deep house from the Englishman Mark Hand. The record kicks off with Midnight, a beautiful track with it’s floaty pads and gently rippling bass tones, coupled with the great soulful voice of Greg Blackman. False Leads is a percussive number, drenched in machine soul, with on the flip, Sio’s voice sits effortlessly above a downtempo beat, while Mark adds his late father’s saxophone to the mix on the final jazz enfused Mountains.

Eliott Litrowski – Schmock Machine EP [MST037]

Elliot Litrowski is the newest member of the Moustache Records family. His debut called Schmock Machine EP will be released as Moustache Records 037. The EP title track song Schmockmachine is an uptempo TR707 beat, a really strong arpeggio, deep smooth strings with top break… A2 Arpeggiophobia moog synths, deep basslines and deeper strings topped with hipster plastic drums. B1 He somtimes goes out at night is a powerfull track with pumping tr-707 beat, obvious italo strings, some acid, a mega party break and an Alden Tyrell kinda bassline. B2 Patrique;s world a more slower beaytifull track with cowbells, sharp snaredrums and a very niche bassline, some flanger hi-hats and there you go.

Vedelius – Vedelius EP [030EP014]

What a wonderful outlier on Holland’s 030303 label, this one. Lush breaks, with hints of UK hardcore and classic bleep house inhabit this wonderful EP. The EP kicks of with the track ‘Animal Samba’ is more housey with memories of 808 State, UR and Reese springing to mind. A2 is called ‘Junglitter’ and with a tempo so low, the track is perfect for slow raving; this is Goldie abusing the hand break…Breaks are at its heaviest on the first track of the flipside: ‘Musiphon’ keeps rolling on a brilliant formula of a dominant bass line rolling at mid tempo while an LFO-esque melodie fights for a second position. The last one ‘Vedelius’ -like the artist- a four/four track accompanied with breaks with the quirky melody in the bass and nightmarish screams taking over. This is possibly the track most suitable for the dance floor, not a cozy one though.
