Africaine 808 – Basar [CHANNEL055CD ]

DJ Nomad and Dirk Leyers’ Africaine 808 project has been responsible for some of the most inventive and enjoyable music of the last few years. It’s little surprise, then, to find that the Berlin-based outfit’s debut album, Basar, is rather special. Built around their now famous polyrhythmic, Afro and Latin influenced drum machine programming, it begins with a touch of snaking jazz, and climaxes with a dense, rising, uplifting Afro-gospel workout that should leave listeners thrilled and breathless. In between, you’ll find 21st century broken beat, delicious downtempo torch songs about break-ups, Juke-influenced Cajun blies bangers, and hard-to-define – but thoroughly engaging – dancefloor wig-outs.

Frak – Sudden Haircut EP [DE109]

Frak are Björn Isgren, Johan Sturesson and Jan Svensson, a trio of synthesizer lovers from Sweden. The band was formed when Svensson and Isgren’s older sisters were best friends and they introduced their little brothers to each other. Inspired by Severed Heads, DAF, Human League, Devo, Skinny Puppy, the boys began collecting analog equipment and started Studio Styrka. While the band were still in their early teens they released the first FRAK cassette album in 1987 on their own record label Börft. Almost 30 years later, FRAK continue to release their bizarre brand of Scandinavian techno with their debut release on Dark Entries.

D’Marc Cantu marks his return to Run Out Run with the Gear Shift EP, applying his unique style across four tracks. On the A side ‘It’s Sex’ kicks things off with his signature drum programming and some serious acid business while ‘Body Jak’ is a frantic electro workout. Perseus Traxx – Secret Gang 001 [SG-001]

Perseus Trax returns to wax with this first outing on new imprint Secret Gang. Three scorching hot electro/acid excursions. Bustling percussion and squelching synths meet head on, resulting in pure dance floor destruction.

VA – Signs Of Decay [SOM038]

Signs of Decay: Acid Compilation with dirty and hard acid cuts by Ekman, The Exaltics, Helena Hauff, Perseus Traxx, Drvg Cvltvre and a artwork made by Godspill. A powerful collective statement on the desiccation some “hard and dirty acid tracks” can do to a dancefloor. Don’t come here looking for any lofty concepts, this is just five of the best banging their boxes in the name of all that is grotty and lysergic.

Golden Teacher ‎– First Three EPs [GT002LP]

Golden Teacher and the Rough Trade shops join forces to offer new ears the opportunity to hear the Teacher’s first three recording efforts on one handy compilation. Recorded between 2012 and 2013 at Glasgow’s Green Door Studio through a state-funded scheme for unemployed young musicians, this release documents the six-piece’s interest in the willful naïveté of late 20th century “post-” tendencies, leading France’s MidiLibre to later describe Golden Teacher as “an idiot-savant prototype of dance music in the 3rd millennium.” Golden Teacher is an ensemble of Cassie Ojay, Charles Lavenac, Laurie Pitt, Oliver Pitt, Richard McMaster and Sam Bellacosa. This release gathers all material from the band’s first three EPs, first released as OM18, OM20 and OM23 on Glasgow’s Optimo Music. The LP presents a selection of the band’s favorite tracks from these sessions.

Xaf – El Presidente [DYFR007]

The new DYFR containing one mighty electro / acid bomb by Xaf, member of the Ghetto Gem project. Baz Reznik takes it upon him to deliver a very dance floor effective acid remix. As usual DYFR is very limited experimental series.

Lost Trax – Life Out Of Balance [FR032]

The Lost Trax project has allegedly been a platform for any number of artists to produce under the cloak of anonymity, all identity shorn so the focus remains on the music. After a clutch of 12″s for Tabernacle at the turn of the decade, Lost Trax was reactivated last year with a contribution to a Shipwrec 12″ and now migrates to Rotterdam’s finest, Frustrated Funk. On the opening title track, “Life Out Of Balance,” Lost Trax display a nervous fidgety energy and a looseness in execution that will sound quite thrilling on the dancefloor, whilst “It’s You” is a muddy yet heavenly cut. Closer “Out From Under” finds crystalline electro rhythms caked in thick tape hiss too.

The Invariants – TI003 [TI003]

The Invariants are back with a new record in similar fashion. Synths to mess with the mind, hypnotising drums to stimulate the body. The A side features a jam in two parts supplemented by two acid filled cuts on the second side.

VA – Various III [030LP004]

The 030303 crew come with a brand new various artist package in a beautifully designed sleeve to celebrate their 10th anniversary. While not all featured artist are new to 030303, the label mainly sticks to what it does best: digging up exciting new names from the raving underground. The smooth electronic tracks on the comp hold the middle ground between acid, IDM, braindance, early 1990s 808 State-esque UK acid house and Detroit techno. Among the highlights are Echo 106’s eerie after hour acid jam ‘Phosphor’, ‘Damp Patch’ by Marco Bernardi which reminds us of classic Surgeon-style UK techno, Forma’s ‘Sailor” (reminiscent of Charanjit Singh’s ‘Ten Ragas to a Disco Beat’). Look no further if a versatile, subtle and beautiful acid compilation is what you’re after.
