Andy Vaz – I’m Not From [CHIWAX002LTD]

https://i1.wp.com/images.junostatic.com/300/CS504160-01A-MED.jpg

Andy Vaz with his second release on Chiwax. Kicking off with a chunky resounding kicks and some soft 808 congas, Andy drops a subtle bassline then plays with some very minimal percussion and ethereal sounds, before letting the subtle vocal samples permeate as the track gradually increases in its complexity as more percussion and synth parts are added even though the overall tone remains satisfyingly repetitive, deep and intriguingly organic. The flip uses the same kind of warm percussion, adding smatterings of acid cut with panning and wild unusual chords and tones that grab the mind just to take it to the side before unexpectedly swiftly in the other direction. The final track has a mixture of samples giving a clue to the Detroit influence, while clearly stating out the German craftsmanship as one key force of the worlds motorisation, before descending into laid back acid over warm kicks and ticking hats complimented by yet more ethereal chords and stabs from bass and lead. There is nothing about this that’s boring or cliché and though this isn’t from Detroit, a lot of the inspiration clearly is. This is a release with some serious low tempo depth and skill, taking the feel what’s great about America’s midwest with a well considered European approach, definitely the best of both worlds….

Andy Vaz feat. Niko Marks – Don’t Lose Your Mind [DSR-H004]

Don't Lose Your Mind

Andy Vaz on Delsin house series. He serves up two versions of the same track ‘Don’t Lose Your Mind’. Both feature the sweet vocal stylings of Niko Marks and the first, the Soul Version, is all ditty, bouncy chords, floating, summery saxophone lines and warm, effusive synths. The second House Dub mix is a little sharper – the claps cut through the soupy sonics like a knife and as a result the groove has a more urgent bite. Still stuffed with plenty of human loveliness, though, both tracks are surely set for many spins this summer given their classy feel good vibes.

Andy Vaz – Straight Vacationing [YRE028LP]

VAZ, Andy - Straight Vacationing (Front Cover)

Andy Vaz’s Straight Vacationing, his first full-length artist album since 2006, registers as less a straight-up collection of dance-floor burners and more of a variety pack that mixes club tracks and full-fledged house songs. Listeners hungry for just ordinary 4/4 throw-downs will not entirely get their share of those, but they’ll also get a whole lot more on this dynamic and well-rounded set of eight album tracks and that is exploring House Music not just as a simple one way street, but give you a very personal view of the music we call House. Straight Vacationing dives into the genre in all it’s rich variety: From deep melodic, early Chicago influenced Acid House, Jacking-Jedi Mind Tricks to Disco-type grooves and last but not least excursions into Bizzaro World, with a vaz typical almost psychedelic experimental-edged Sound, it’s all there.

Andy Vaz – Shadow City [YRE021]

The Yore Captain returns to his own Yore Imprint on the Labels 21st Release. “Shadow City” presents different visions of funky house grooves. The A side’s “The “Y” Theme” gets deeply moving with a funky house pulse before stoking the fire with the addition of speaking voices, a move which single-handedly jumpstarts the track. After the voices appear, the groove’s intensity escalates and plunges deeper, its gyroscopic house swing becoming more dizzying and torrential with each passing bar before coming to an acidy storming end. In its opening moments, “Shadow City” opts for a deeper and more serenading vibe by comparison, but that’s traded in for a slinkier attack at the three-minute mark that grows progressively more ferocious as the track makes its drastic upwards ascent. The B side’s B2 track, “Mumbai Dweller” keeps the focus primarily on the bottom end, specifically a strutting tribal-house funk groove that’s dragged even deeper by a throbbing bass undertow, adding Dark Chords to it, giving this EP a Darker Feeling towards the end.
