Chicago Skyway – Empty Patterns [EMP016]

‘Empty Patterns” is a collection of tracks named after empty, programmable user patterns founds in most modern sequencers, synthesizers, and drum machines. All tracks are DJ tools and is geared towards DJs and dance floors. Lots of Chicago jacking house style drum patterns and bass synth stabs, with added reverb and distortion for grit and color.

Simoncino – Amazon Atlantis [CRLP012]

Simoncino is back with another full length album, Amazon Atlantis, on Creme Organization. His vintage sound is one full of real emotion, and that is the case with this new full length. Simoncio turns on his machines and makes music every day, just for pleasure. Every so often he feels the time is right to release a new collection of material, and that time is now. There is no objective or particular message behind the album, it was simply conjured up using the Akai S 900 and the Emu Emax I drum machines as well as a Roland JX8P, a Korg PolySix a Ensoniq ESQ1 and a Yamaha DX7. Made at different times over an extended period of time in his home studio in Perugia, Italy, the album features two collaborations. The first is with Legowelt, “who besides being one of my favourite artists is a close friend” and the other is with Vincent Floyd, “a true legend whose records ‘Cruising and ‘I Dream You’ have left their mark on my life.”

D’Marc Cantu – That Love You Feel [THEMA043]

Thema turns to a modern master of the JakBeat, D’Marc Cantu. Hailing from Ann Arbor on the fringes of Detroit, Cantu has worked for more than a decade developing a sound that carries the torch from the box jam originators of techno and house music. Given his adventurous tendencies and punchy Midwestern finish, Cantu is a perfect fit on Thema and the six tracks that make up this record show a great deal of the diversity the man is capable of, from dancefloor burners to atmospheric introspection.

Marcus Mixx – Rub It Don’t Go So Fast [UTTU054]

Chicago’s Marcus Mixx return to Unknown to the Unknown. The salaciously named Rub It Don’t Go Fast is a welcome return, and the producer’s unhinged urges remain wonderfully undimmed as the title track attests. It’s dark acid house with redlining bass, a monstrous kick drum and a clear sense of perverse humour. “Rub it in French…” On the flip, Mixx lays down two swerving takes on breakbeat house flex out “Do U Luv 2 Dance”.

Fingers Inc. – Another Side [ML9001LP]

Some 17 years after it’s original release, Fingers Inc’s expansive debut album, Another Side, remains one of the greatest deep house full-lengths of all time. Here, the album gets the re-master and re-issue treatment, with the original double vinyl set being expanded to a triple to guarantee loud cuts for club play. While there are plenty of well-known Heard and co classics present – “Mysteries of Love”, “Bring Down The Walls”, “Can You Feel It” etc. – it’s actually the long-forgotten album tracks that really hit the spot. It’s on these moments – often influenced as much by ’80s soul and synth-pop as acid and Chicago jack-tracks – that Larry Heard, Robert Owens and Ron Wilson really cut loose.
