E.R.P. – Evoked Potentials 1/3 [SEM014]

Any new project from Convextion man Gerard Hanson’s ERP project is worth celebrating, particularly when it is stretched over three 10-inch singles. Part one of the Evoked Potentials series offers two typically on-point chunks of intergalactic electro. He begins with “Sensory Progress”, where vintage computer bleeps, throbbing electrofunk bass, spacey chords and yearning melodies wrap themselves around a snappy TR-808 groove. Flipside “Lodestone” is a slightly more atmospheric affair, where cascading synthesizer melodies and grandiose, deep space chords cluster around a shuffling rhythm track. It sounds a little like Drexciya jamming with Brown Album-era Orbital, which is no bad thing in our book.

Interstellar Funk – Caves Of Steel [BH037]

Ace four-tracker. Caves was created in the aftermath of a devastating set by DJ Stingray, and sounds like it: storming but funky, infused with the spirit of classic Detroit techno. Spacetown marries Arpanet and John Carpenter, with a saturnine melody which sticks in the mind. Flip it for a deadly Caves remix by man-of-the-year Convextion, inimitably sci-fi but banging; and the elemental, ambient accomplishment of The Strips, consolidating the promise on show throughout.

E.R.P. – New Road [TUP002]

Second release on Craig Richards’ Tuppence seven-inch single label, comes courtesy of E.R.P. AKA Convextion (Gerard Hanson). Hot on the heels of his brilliant 2845 album comes this mesmeric ‘New Road’ seven-inch, a must for all Convextion fans.

Convextion – 2845 [ARTLESS2845]

2845 is Gerard Hanson’s first full-length as Convextion in a decade. The new album is made up of seven characteristically spacy techno cuts, and is his first release with the Mojuba-affiliated a.r.t.less.

Achterbahn D’ Amour – Odd Movements The Remixes [ASD024]

Achterbahn D’Amour’s machinefunk opus, “Odd Movements.” gets reworked with 4 sonically diverse remixes. Detroit don Marcellus Pittman kicks things off with a massive, unsettling flip of “Holy Roman Empire.” The Italian producer Chevel is up next with a virtuosic take on the LP’s title track. His cubist, artfully restrained version ends with over a minute of icy techno snap. Convextion, as well, chooses to hold back for maximum impact, infusing the moody “Passagen” with subdued electro bounce. Finally, SW. imbuesthe duo’s “Konigstr” with dubbed-out breakbeat pressure, occasionally allowing the original acid line to seep through a skittering rave rhythm.

Brett Johnson – The Mission [LWK2]

Legwork’s 2nd single comes from Brett Johnson. The Mission harks back to some of our favourite dub-techno moments, but keeps it’s own flare with Brett’s signature robo-rhythms and chopped and screwed vocal cuts. On the remix tip, it’s label head Lance DeSardi & Convextion bringing their own flavour to the table respectively, with Lance stepping to the chord memory, deep bass, and over sampled drums, and Convextion going all the way out into hyper space with his usual sub-aquatic space funk.

VA – 100DSR Compilation [100DSR]

17 years after first releasing a cassette EP from label boss Marsel van der Wielen under his Peel Seamus guise, Delsin has now hit the landmark category number of 100. Truth is, taking into account choice re-issues and specials such as the recent house series, there have already been scores more than 100 releases. Nevertheless, in that time the Dutch label has become synonymous with a wide range of timeless sounds from house to techno to dub to electronica, nurturing and championing some of the most respected names in the scene, all of which can now be enjoyed on 5 separate, various artist vinyl EPs or one impressive two disc compilation. Far from just a collection of tracks, the 100DSR compilation has been carefully curated to tell the tale of Delsin. Each record conveys a slightly different part of the story – be it house, techno, beats or electro – yet every one is tied together by the label’s own underlying sense of desolate melancholy. Across the five EPs and complete CD collection there are tracks from newbies and old favourites alike, including Sawlin and Delta Funktionen, John Beltran and Bleak, Redshape and Convextion, Gerry Read and Claro Intelecto.

To mark the occasion of Delsin hitting 100 releases, the label is to release five new various artist EPs throughout the rest of the year. Besides a special collector’s box edition, all EPs will be offered separately, with limited edition colour runs and unlimited black copies. All fifteen tracks will also be compiled onto one CD. Label mates Convextion, Sawlin and Ross 154 (aka Newworldaquarium) contribute one tack each for the third EP in the series.
