Baaz – What About Talk About #1 [OFFICE001]

The debut release on Office Recordings is the first part of a series produced by label founder Baaz. “In My Mind” is a subtle, shiny piece of jazzyfied house music with a steady rolling groove and dirty kickdrum. “Glim” bangs the box with deep dubs and a sexy vigorous groove. The flip starts with two mind-bending downbeat cuts with a stumbling beat. Last but not least a slowburning remix of “Way Out Citti” by Matthias Reiling (Session Victim, Giegling Recordings) and Björn Astrup who did a brilliant job twisting the original into a soulful homage to the slow side of house
music.

Red Rack’em – If Only The Past EP [BERGERAC003]

Three track EP of pretty banging bassy techno and wonky house following up the first releases on the label. The title track, “If Only The Past”, plays tricks on your inner rhythm with its loose percussion, Detroit driven pads and a deep vocal injection. The bassline and the kick drum work in conjunction with an immersive bass tone, enveloping you in low-frequency hypnosis. “Alone Always” is a sluggish yet fiercely moving house jam. A well placed medley of samples, startling pads and sharp chords punctuate a penetrating beat – best suited to an early-morning, sub-level sweatbox.

Soul 223 – Almost Like It Used To Be [DSR-H002]

Second release on the new house music aligned Delsin series is coming from Soul 223 aka Steve Pickton. He has been producing melodic, Detroit inspired sounds since the mid 90s, most often as Stasis on labels like Peacefrog and Mo Wax.
A keen sense of melodic colour also characterises the four cuts that make up this EP, with the first, ‘Almost Like It Used To Be’ pairing radiant pads with a lolloping house beat and plenty of melted synth sounds. Next up, ‘Arties Mood’ slows to a Moodymann styled pace, layering percussive samples, keys and jazzy motifs onto of a lazy house beat to conjure a perfect sunny afternoon vibe. ‘Heartstrings’ is alive with the sound of the cosmos as it rolls on through organic sounding bongos, sharper claps and plenty of neon lines. Closing track ‘Essex’ has a gummy, gritty bottom end sweetened by more glistening melodies and key work, all the while chugging along at a most inviting deep house pace.

Jonsson / Alter – Mod Mixes [KM024]

Jonsson/Alter Mod album remixes are here, featuring Minilogue, Donato Dozzy and Dorisburg. All remixes has some kind uplifting and sunny trance mode to them, so as it turns out, this is actually the prefect spring release. Minilogue starts out with the track Kyrka 2.0 and ads both speed and length. Donato takes on the track Acapellan and does everything right. Keeping the beautiful vocals of the original, Donato adds bass line and new drums. The EP closes with another Swedish contribution. Alexander Berg aka Dorisburg from duo Genius Of Time reworks Djup House, and does it well. A solid bass line keeps us grounded to the dance floor while dreamy melodies and harmonies gently lift our serotonin levels.

Fort Romeau – Kingdoms [SILK022]

https://imagescdn.juno.co.uk/300/CS449482-01A-MED.jpg

Mike Norris aka Fort Romeau is a UK artist based in South London. Mike began making music at 14, inspired by the slow jams of Air’s Premiers Symptômes and the warm analogue sounds of Autechre’s Amber LP he began creating, “just loops of noise and atmosphere, just playing with the sound directly.” Later, while at university in Brighton, he began DJing at clubs and the experience of being enveloped in the sound had a profound effect on his attitude to music-making. In Mike’s words, “I started really thinking about the visceral quality of the sound all my favorite music had – this deep, thick quality that just absorbed you.” Shortly after leaving university, Mike began working with the band La Roux, playing keyboards and programming the band’s live show – all the while developing his own musical practice between sound checks and airport stopovers. It wasn’t until the band stopped touring that he was able to concentrate on his music full time and, having become used to working within the limitations of a slow laptop and a pair of headphones, changed his ethos to music making “you have to learn to be very efficient, its is pretty frustrating but you live within the limitations of your equipment. That’s what really defines you as a musician I think. I only have one synthesizer, a Yamaha DX7, and this LP is really the product of me interfacing with that one synth and a 7 year old laptop.”

Nitetime – Jivetalk [FCL073]

Nitetime is the new production duo from Boston, USA comprised of Kon and Whisky Baron. Nitetime’s debut EP Jive Talk sits on a bridge between OG boom bap hip hop – with its tough drums and grooved up interludes – and the 4/4 rhythms of classic house and disco.

Jay Bliss – The Art of Doing Nothing [INITIALS02]

BLISS, Jay - The Art Of EP (Front Cover)

Initials imprint delivers its second release this spring, Jay Blissʼ ʻThe Art of Doing Nothingʼ backed with a remix from Petre Inspirescu. In both original tracks Jay Bliss relies on little else than careful manipulation of structure and sound to create captivating fare. Lead track ʻDoing Nothingʼ revolves around a lumpy, satisfying groove and a three note hit while Jay Bliss teases out every detail to just before breaking point while ʻXʼ takes a deeper, more immersive route. Petre Inspirescu delivers a typically dense, rhythmic interpretation of ʻXʼ which clocks in at just over 14 minutes and rallies around padding kicks, sonic oddities and a ever-evolving percussion. Incredibly bass heavy, itʼs a version that gives an intense, sub-aquatic view of the original.

Ed Shepherd – Remedy [LH005]

Another entry into the Lonesome Hero roster, Ed Shepherd. Having hoarded an arsenal of hardware goodies, Shepherd employs his passion for all things analog into a beast of a 3-track EP. ‘Remedy’ grabs 90s acid house by the shirt collar and shoves it into the modern vinyl scene with a heady LFO drone that just won’t quit. Changing direction, ‘Britta’ epitomizes the fleshed-out inner romanticism Shepherd continually uncovers throughout his ever-evolving studio process. And then ‘Beaker’, an homage to Techno’s sequenced-and-squelchy Dan Bell era.

Kim Brown – Spring Theory EP [JAB006]

Superb Deep House from Kim Brown, making her (his?) debut on the boutique Berlin imprint, Just Another Beat. Elegantly paced and carefully arranged, Brown’s first outing makes a strong impression. ‘Camera Moves’ sounds like The Burrell Brothers making out with Sven Weissmann, while ‘This Will Like Never Be The Same’ hits a hazy, nostalgic vibe with lush Balearic Boogie infusions.

Magic Mountain High – The Schnitzel Box Vol. 1 [WORKSHOPXX]

MAGIC MOUNTAIN HIGH - The Schnitzel Box Vol 1 (Front Cover)

News first surfaced over a year ago of Move D collaborating with Juju & Jordash on an analogue heavy live project entitled Magic Mountain High with the added promise of Workshop released material to follow. Several illuminating festival appearances and many months later and the Workshop label finally present The Schnitzel Box Vol 1, with three untitled productions from the trio that ensure the wait was worth it. Granted the freedom of the A Side, the opening track is allowed the time and space to incorporate both brooding analogue drone and sprawling key laden melodic glisten. Flip over and “Untitled 2” is quicker off the blocks, swiftly settling into a fizzing house jam rich in warm colour and tone and driven by crisp Roland rhythms, whilst the final arrangement is surely the most eminently danceable with yet more warm analogue patterns and Hitchcockian synth drones worming their way around a skipping techno beat.
