Headhunter – Lost Prophet / Chasing Dragons [IDLE004]

https://i0.wp.com/static.boomkat.com/images/397334/333.jpg

Fresh outta Bristol’s Rooted Records hub, Headhunter lays down the latest Idle Hands 12″. He appears to be on a Soca-Funky/Dubstep mission with both tracks. This works out best on the smartly poised ‘Lost Prophet’, syncing galloping drums with lung-collapsing subs before a majestic techno synthline comes in to remind us who we’re listening to. On the flip ‘Chasing Dragons’ goes harder with a bulked-up drum palette compatible with more techno-inspired Funky, Juke and Dubstep tracks.

Scuba – Remixes Pt.1 [TRI003]

https://clone.nl/platen/artwork/large/plaatimage19203.jpg

New allure is breathed into Scuba’s originals. America’s totem of bass Faulty DL takes leave from the original ‘On Deck’ with a low burring bassline and elegantly woven melodies drawn warmly across the whole. South London’s Deadbeat offers an understated modern jungle remix of Before with skittering hats and heavy bass that can’t fail to light up floors and faces.

Aardvarck – Nosestep [RH-DC05]

This re-release of Aardvarcks genre-defining Nosestep comes with a Cosmin TRG remix, bringing the classic right back 2011 style. Also, a Nubian Mindz rework of Spoken is included: one that wasn’t released back in 2001, but proved to be far ahead of its time..

Martyn – Left Hander / Shook Up [3024-010]

https://i0.wp.com/images.junostatic.com/300/CS409630-01A-MED.jpg

3024’s milestone 10th release arrives with 2 brand new Martyn tracks. ‘Lefthander’ clatters in on heavily filtered drums, flickering high hats & garbled radio transmissions before a carousel synth melody breaks through the percussive murk accompanied by a roaming bass line that prioritises restraint over bludgeon. Steam age industrial monolith ‘Shook Up’ swaps slink for haunted metronomic brutality, snapping quickly into focus first with relentless kicks before bass akin to an Atari2600 playing Berghain looms over the clouded horizon.

Duncan Powell – Pushing [2NDRP12010]

https://i0.wp.com/images.junostatic.com/300/CS401007-01A-MED.jpg

Duncan Powell offers a classic slice of, “James Bond Step”. A big string laden anthem. A goldmine of musical elements, ‘Pushing’ was ripe for the remix treatment by Falty DL, who  transformed ‘it into a dark, broken 2-step swinger with flashes of vocals and strings, to awesome effect.

Cosmin TRG – Liebe Suende [RHDC04]

Cosmin TRG is back with his 2nd release in the Direct Current Series on Rush Hour. This time he loses the steppy beats and turns out two fierce house tracks, yet he keeps his signature cut up r&b samples and the future attitude.

Kidkut – ILove04 [PIPS013]

Peverelist – Better Ways Of Living [DRUNK017]

Peverelist - Better Ways of Living

Peverelist drops two righteously forward riddims for Punch Drunk. The Bristol ringleader has built his rep on quality, not quantity and these tracks bear testament to his principled and stringently executed approach. ‘Better Ways Of Living’ nods to the pared down 808 aesthetic of Swamp 81 with a brittle bustling beat scaffold acting like monkey bars for a piped synth organ to twist, scuttle and roll around in, while ‘Fighting Without Fighting’ continues the rhythmically busy flex with slick dipping edits and bespoke dub measurements applied in a future jungle-hardcore style.

Jam City – Ecstasy (Refix) [NSWL004]

JAM CITY - Ecstasy (refix) (Front Cover)

Night Slugs announce the latest installment in their white label series – the much-anticipated debut 12” of London producer Jam City. On the A side, the psychedelic grime interplorer ”Ecstasy Refix” glows with warmth at its analog core. A jubilant tribute to the art of the grime refix, the track simultaneously recalls two disparate by-gone eras, to devastating effect. On the B side, Night Slugs favorite ”Let Me Bang Refix” drowns a gutter house classic in sheer beams of searing fluorescent synth. Jam City borrows a vintage Wiley meme on closing track ”Shut The Lights Off (Devil Mix)”, all but void of a drum kit it hangs in suspension, awash in sublime synths.

Falty DL – Phreqaflex [ZIQ277]

https://i0.wp.com/static.boomkat.com/images/353873/333.jpg

There’s a feeling of spacious freedom and sensuality written all over these, from the kinky hardcore tropes of the title track and its quicksilver scuff ‘n skip, right through the dubbed shuffle and empty warehouse reverbs of ‘Because You’ on the A-side. ‘My Friends Will Always Say…’ on the flip consolidates the best of both his worlds, designed with an advanced sense of jazzy electronic arrangement, yet keeping everything sparse and still poppy enough to really capture the crowd’s affections.
