VA – Unknown Data Set [PHZ001]

Nice collection of adventurous electro and dreamy house tracks. The unlikelihood of being alive warrants expression. In the increasingly digital universe we are tangibly intertwined yet phenomenally disconnected. This creation of soundscapes defines dream-like iterations of a post-Internet reality and is uncanny in its ability to quintessentially emulate potential futuristic states of being. It induces the uniqueness and highly emotive aspects of undefined existences. It is raw and purposeful. Potatoheadz is a Melbourne-based, DIY label created by Nipuna, Leon Wan & Sam Sedgwick. It is dedicated to the dispersion of local and international music focused on innovative artistry. “Unknown Data Set” is their first record and third release featuring the music of various artists.

Ekman – Primus Motor [SHIPLP08]

“Primus Motor” sees Ekman return to many of the sounds that gained him a reputation as an artist on labels like Bunker and Berceuse Heroique. Although harsh bucking acid lines, pockmarked notes, brutal beats and eerie echo are all present, a new tone has been added to the caustic palette. A psychological nuance, an undercurrent of the inchoate has been investigated and exploited to chilling effect. Crippling psychoses. Debilitating neuroses. Physical pain. Suffering stalks this first full vinyl album. Sinister sounds encircle the eight offerings, hovering like vultures over inhospitable plains of ashen grey, jagged peaks and dark sweeping swamps. Hope is all but drawn away in this bleached audio landscape, drained by sheer synthlines and reduced renderings. Amidst the sorrow and strain there are pin pricks of joy, albeit bleak and pallid ones. An album that unnerves as it engages, a collection of icy radiance and industrial indifference from a dutch master.

Jensen Interceptor & Assembler Code – 6th Element [BNR172]

“6th Element,” Jensen Interceptor’s newest release with frequent collaborator Assembler Code brings this aesthetic in a darker, more focused, more serious direction without losing the grit and grain that colors his work.  The result is 4 tracks of club ready, weaponized techno heavy on EBM and industrial influence with an agenda to menace.

Aleks – Pool Daze [OA005]

Rising talent Aleks joins the Organic Analogue realm of spiritual sonic exploration. The Amsterdam-based producer has already made a name for himself in the past few years with his penchant for sci-fi imagery and impeccable hardware jams, hence he feels like a natural fit for OA. This double LP release provides the chance to hear some of the breadth in Aleks productions, from ambient submersions to Detroitian techno and sharp edged 303 resonance that skirts the divide between jacking club material and emotional content. HVL returns to OA with a frankly stunning remix of “Pool Daze” that steps up to the giants of early electronica. As an additional treat, the Georgian producer has also donned his Kiyadama guise for the eight-minute psych-out “Acid Expansion Remix” of “Void”. Capturing the foggy time-slip quality of the dancefloor with a sound that could just as easily come from the late morning, the Pool Daze LP is equally comfortable as another thread in the OA tapestry.

Maenad Veyl – Somehow, Somewhere They Have Heard This Before [PBD10.5]

Pinkman welcomes Maenad Veyl to its roster of artists for his debut release in the form of the labels second tape. ‘Make Them Remember’ sets the gloomy mood with clattering percussion and ghostly synth lines. The messy drum patterns of Taiko Death Rhythm’ are breaking up the cold mist. The A-side of the cassette is completed by the melodic slow burning energy of ‘D.M.M.R.M’. On the other side ‘State ov Apprehension’ and ‘Sotto Gli Occhi Tutti’ further darken the character, to then pave way for ‘In Ruins’ to finish the damage with it’s ethereal, yet soul ripping guitar riffs.

LA Synthesis – Harmonis Disassembly [DRIVE002]

For the latest installment of the Midnight Drive presents a reissue of London duo LA Synthesis. Formed on the Southside of the city in the late 80’s Carl Grant and Tony Gallagher’s long running LA Synthesis project has given us some of the most forward looking, modern and compelling Electro and Techno over the span of the last 3 decades. ‘Harmonic Disassembly / Skyline’ was originally released in 1997 on the cult Evolution label. Both tracks are sleek, cutting edge examples of electronic music. Now, almost 20 years after it’s original release we see a full repress of one of the jewels in the LA Synthesis crown, a truly cult record that stylistically transcends time and space and sounds every bit as groundbreaking and fresh as it did in 1997.

N.O.I.A. – Forbidden Planet (Remixes) [NEXIT004]

The superb ‘Forbidden Planet’ is a shiny early electro cut with a great funk bass line, a real instrumental groove and fantastic melodies that shimmer like a hot sun. It’s filled with joy and sounds as fresh today as ever, the way it ducks and dives and offers real warmth. The Francisco Remix keeps the funk vibe but changes the groove to be a more Chicago house style cut. As such it has a rasping bassline, big drums and coarse percussion that make you want to jack. The masterful Ali Renault—a go-to disco and synth specialist who runs Cyber Dance Records, Human Shield Record Company and most recently his own Vivod imprint—then turns out a hypnotic version that is more driven and direct for the dance floor, with robotic bass and epic reflective synth lines. It’s a cinematic track with great analogue textures that goes back to the future. The last original is the excellent ‘Stay With Me’, a cosmic love song with breezy trumpets and dreamy disco vibes as well as soulful vocals. Italo melodies and infectious percussion finish it off and make it an instant crowd pleaser.
