This is a piece of Estonian underground music’s history. More than 20 years ago, in Estonia, Hypnosaurus were pioneers of deep house and techno, the first ones to have gone with this new strange rhythmic music into the studio and into the dark basements of Tallinn. The remix is by the strange and wonderful Chicago producer Hieroglyphic Being. This is soul music of rusty funk-robots. For this remix he is said to have tried out new methods of dealing with sohttps://hipodrome.wordpress.com/wp-admin/post-new.phpunds, switching them on and off.

Ikonika – Beach Mode (Keep It Simple) [HDB074]

Beach Mode (Keep It Simple) is the perfect snapshot of Ikonika’s new album ‘Aerotropolis’. It’s also her first vocal track, graced with the voice of One To Watch, Jessy Lanza. Beach Mode combines sunny salsa-like chords and claves, inspired by latin freestyle dance music from the 80s, with Jessy’s vocals cutting in over some soaring rough synths. It’s a refreshingly straight forward and sensual piece of pop dance. Side B starts with a dub mix for all the vocal haters, while the Percapella version breaks it down into a syncopated drum track and a slightly dubbed take on the vocals, giving it a tracky and colder toughness reminiscent of early Chicago house music.

Gonno – The Noughties [BIS009]

The latest 12″ from Beats In Space Records features three tracks recorded between 2005 and 2009 courtesy of Tokyo’s humbly dynamic Gonno. A dynamic producer who is clearly not afraid to nest until crucial hatch time, Gonno flies the coop with a wingspan throwing psychedelic color at a sunburst sky. Blending a spectrum of musical influences from Primal Scream’s Screamadelica, to Basic Channel and personal touch points about the people (and animals) he’s met and the joy / sorrow they cause, Gonno’s productions blur the lines between art and life experience.

Selvagem – Amor [BISX003]

Selvagem is both the name of the DJ duo as well as the name of their monthly party in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Its a monthly sunset party that is considered one of the best in the city. They have hosted DJs such as Twitch from Optimo, Severino from Horse Meat Disco, Andy Blake from World Unknown and Paul Thomson, the drummer for Franz Ferdinand. They recently did a mix for Beats In Space that was 100% Brazilian music. From disco to funk, psychedelic, post-punk, electro and batucada. Its a mix of luscious rhythms, crazy translations and outer-world oddities that can provoke one’s inner savage. The three tracks on this EP were selected from this BIS mix.

Cosby – Hands Together [SILK052]

American bass lifer Will Creason aka Cosby has a storied history in various electronic micro-scenes, with hands in an an array of labels and modes, but he first cropped up on our radar back in early ’11 with his “Sangria” demo, an entrancing anthem of sultry, Sound Stream-y nu groove magic that we immediately burned and spun out in several time zones. Inspired equally by NY garage and Baltimore club music, he patiently pieced together the rest of his SILK debut EP from sessions in Seattle and D.C. and the results reveal a colorful cutaway of classic club energies: dubbed vocal workouts, confused house, funky footloose FX, jacking party acid, woozy filtered disco edits, etc. Hands Together casts a wide net and is all the better for it, dragging up a fun, freaky mishmash of time-warped dance forms from the bottom of the body-music world-brain.

Hugh Mane – Spectra Sonics EP [RB041]

Made in the basement of an old tram station circa 1990 in a town that was probably London, Hugh Manes first and only release so far consists of hidden gems on a vintage DAT. “Back Life” is the name of this EP’s back bone. A reflexion about golden age deep house, early morning baby powder dreams or epiphanies on strawberry fields. “Hard To Finish If You’re Finish” and “My Midi Is A Mess” are the continuation of those visions, while “Fukdemdiscoidkids” via a Tuff City Kids edit is a rough and ready beat track.

Mr. G – Retrospective [REKIDS012]

MR G - Retrospective

Illuminating compilation of trax from stalwart London producer Colin McBean, spanning a decade and half. The man himself talks of his “soulful, twisted low-end funk sound” and he’s right on the money: his productions have found fans in disparate factions of the underground, from the afterparty tech-house set to the UK bass upstarts, via the deeper house heads. Long before he began his association with Rekids, the label behind this compilation, G was rolling out gold on his own Phoenix G and labels like Defected, Duty Free, Shuffled, End, Tag and Careless, under such aliases as The Reaver, Mango Boy and Halcyon Daze. For this 21-track comp he’s selected his own highlights from this vast body of work, and it’s effectively the most potent cache of secret weapons that a DJ could hope to stumble upon this year. Of the Mr G-assigned cuts pay special heed to the bass-licked warehouse thump of ‘Hear Me Out’, the jazzwise tribalism of ‘Jet Black’, the priapic boogie-tech of ‘Shelter (Unreleased Version)’ and the headier Detroit stylings of ‘G’s Strings’, while the lockstep discoid bounce of The Reaver’s ‘Mmmm’ and Mango Boy’s sickly minimal, psychedelic ‘Potion’ also impress.

Neinzer – And Again [YUME001]

Fresh new UK label with two killer tracks that will turn some heads. Amazing piece of house music that is working like madd without using the standard cliche’s. A accomplishment by this young producer Neinzer in these days of ‘looking back’! Opening with a funked up track that goes somewhere between things we know from Shake and Recloose but comparing it to others isn’t doing the track any justice. Flip side cranks the tempo up and gives a mad techno piece with some sample trickery
