ASOK – Better Deat Than Alien [MOS025]

ASOK - Better Dead Than Alien

M>O>S Recordings kick off 2019 with a new EP from the Liverpool artist ASOK. With one foot on the dance floor and a mind lost somewhere in the cosmos, ASOK again combines breakbeats, astral synth work and prickly percussion into fresh new forms here. The title track is a twitchy and futuristic bit of house with glistening and distorted textures, Find A Way has a rubbery bassline and old school rave breaks, and Many Locations is a bumping bit of deep Detroit house with a real sense of serenity. Closer Baal ends in the heavens, with celestial ambiance, spinning hi hats and broken beats all sounding delicate yet dynamic as rasping bass ties everything together. This is another timeless and adventurous EP from ASOK.

Anopolis – Dimadou [APR01]

The third release in the Anopolis trilogy coincides with the founding of Anopolis Records. Like the previous two EPs, Dimadou takes reference points from the sound of the 90s and avoids getting bogged down with track titles. The first track, A19 is noticeably influenced by the Sheffield scene and Rising High records. The EP continues with the heavy bass line and the TR-707 drums of A18, a strong nod to the Chicago sound. On the B side, drum machines dominate in A21 and A20 with their piercing sound hinting towards the style of Ron Hardy. Rounding off the EP is the atmospheric A17 and its warm, hazy pads. This final part of the trilogy is simultaneously the beginning for further releases through the project s new imprint Anopolis Records.

Tracey – Metamorphosis [AUS137]

Tom Ruij aka Tracey’s palette of influences is wide and far-reaching, from the far-sighted futurism of Detroit and the deep space pulse of electro, to left-of-centre electronic experimentalism and the alien world of British and European IDM all of which are showcased on his Metamorphosis EP.

Jamie Paton – Disk Memories [HNRUK008]

PATON, Jamie - Disk Memories

Jamie Paton makes music that could be described as ‘Leftfield techno’ or ‘Slowmotion house’. ‘Disk Memories’, his second release on Hoga Nord Rekords, is barren electronic music for the Brexit generation. Paton has established a dystopic electronic sound that aims straight at your frontal lobe, burns in your bones, and projects a lost Europe’s anxiety on the grey London skies. The music breathes of the cold 1980’s, a time of crisis in England’s history and a vibe to be recognize in today’s society: right-wing winds once again blows hard over the British Isles and Jamie Paton’s music catches the insecurity the wind carries with it.

Villa Åbo – Carpet Proof Of Daily Reports [IDEAL168]

It’s a Swedish house thing. Börft boss Jan Zwarre Svensson a.k.a Frak returns to his early project, Villa Åbo, for six deep and rude acid rub downs. Villa Åbo is more than a band name. It is a former bank buliding in Johannishus in South East Sweden which was where Börft Records was founded and where the boss Jan Zwarre Svensson grew up. It was where the original location of Studio Styrka was and where the first important years of recordings by FRAK and Alvars Orkester was done. It was a creative volcano, and also a social meeting point for likeminded, teenage weirdos into electronic music. Villa Abo is the foundation for a lot of stuff still resonating today. FRAK has been active for a long time now releasing tons of records, Alvars Orkester is asleep but about to be awaken, and Villa Abo is the output for his addiction to deeper electronic dance stuff.

Passarani – W.O.W. [OFFEN010]

PASSARANI - WOW

Offen Music presents ‘W.O.W’, Marco Passarani’s first solo album in 14 years. Passarani is one of the most influential artists from the Italian underground. Active since the ‘90s he was responsible for bringing rave sounds from Detroit and the UK in and out of Italy. The album puts together influences from proto-house, dystopic electronica and classic Detroit Techno, as Passarani says “I was trying to bring order to my creativity, going through the pieces of the puzzle that I’ve been lost in. Before, I could concentrate on some areas of the puzzle, while now I can see the final picture when I look at all those pieces”. Masterclass business from the Roman machine wizard – another special one for Dusseldorf’s OFFEN.

Betonkust & Palmbomen II – Parallel B [DKMNTL062]

BETONKUST/PALMBOMEN II - Parallel B

Moving on from their time holed up in a leisure resort relic, the Dutch retrogressive, analogue synth machine obsessives and tape fanatics Betonkust & Palmbomen II have teamed up together once more for a new EP. An immediate follow up to their debut LP Center Parcs, the new EP pays fictional homage to a now deceased famous TV star, who instead on working on the screen, took up a new direction in making music. Once more replete with esoteric experimentalism, analogue jams, drums machines, synths, and a healthy dose of acid basslines, the production duo advance upon their aesthetic with a new extended EP of nostalgic, melancholic electro.

Low Tape – Road Valley [XK015]

LOW TAPE - Road Valley

Low Tape debuts on X-Kalay with a massive 5 tracker of emotive electro and acid. The Russian producer showcases a real talent in creating a versatile and diverse EP; expertly balancing functional club weight and subtle melodic sensibility. Title track Road Valley is a case in point; carried by a wistful melody line, the track is underpinned by flickering percussion, deep pads and a warm rumbling bass. Red Lights in ma Eyes utilizes a punchy, swung electro groove whilst celestial pads play out under a dripping acid line. Acid Television switches things up with a hammering sawtooth bass, whilst the sharp percussion and cold synths lend a distinctively mysterious, almost noir-esque feel… On Technovia the 303 makes a return – driving acid, urgent percussion and tense pads combine for another slick club cut. Finally, the drifting pads and soaring melodies of ‘Why is Life so Strange’ conclude things perfectly with shimmering melancholy and introspection.

The Revolving Eyes – The Nature And The Metal EP [MOD006]

Over the last decade, few have amassed as fine a catalogue of revivalist Italo-disco, EBM and synth-wave cuts than The Revolving Eyes. It’s because of this that each new release from the Belgian duo is worth a listen. Predictably, there’s plenty of dark and clandestine fodder to be found on The Nature And The Metal, their first release of 2018. Highlights include the foreboding horror chords, psychedelic acid lines and metronomic throb of “Beautiful Sadness”, the rising orchestration and clicking drum machine hits of “Monotrance” and the ragged and distorted, acid-EBM fusion of the titanium-clad “Ritual Serenade”. The title track, which closes the EP, is alo sublime: a clanking industrial workout smothered in far-sighted, futurist techno synths.
