Formula Uno – Racing 3000 LP [BAP159]

“I drive without emotion. I calculate each curve. I know that I will soon be the hero in the Grand Prix.” With Albert One’s lyrics ringing in their ears, steeling their nerves, a new generation of high-octane fuelled drivers fix their headphones and helmets. Formula One, the partnership of DJ Rocca and Aimes, rev their synth engines with the glinting ‘Digits’ and Racing 3000 is underway. The duo has some welcome surprises on-board, the spirited vocals of Fred Ventura for ‘Into My Life’ and the emotion-injected words of Hard Ton for ‘Step By Step’. Exhaust pipes flare and we’re cruising into the chicane of the title piece. Daring synthwork and lush notes are propelled forward by clean percussion as cheering faces flash by. An extended pit-stop is called. ‘Cocktail Time’. Caribbean cool and Latin rhythms are the tone set. Glasses clink and the barroom baritone gives voice to a world of electronic disco lounge. The tempo changes as darkness falls and Francesca Bono sings us a late-night love lament streaked in neon hope. No time for regret. Back behind the wheel and arpeggios rumble as ‘Turbo Slam’ glides from the city and back to the track. The chequered flag is in sight. Formula Uno are set for ‘Home’ as they shift into vocoders for a bright and free finish.

Rees – Three Eyes [BAP155]

The North of England is known for its musical prowess. Middlesbrough born Rees taps into that musical history while diving deep into lost disco, obscure wave and even the Middle East for his debut for Bordello. Three Eyes is a melting pot. Setting sail on bold beats and rumbling synthlines, Rees steers the listener through cascading chords, shimmering key shifts and serenading sirens to produce a truly unique dancefloor experience.

VA – You Can Trust A Man With A Moustache Vol. 4 [MST048]

Moustache Records’ occasional series of multi-artist EPs, You Can Trust a Man With a Moustache, finally reaches its fourth instalment, some 13 years after volume one landed in stories. The formula remains the same: think muscular, throbbing and wildly camp fusions of High-NRG, Italo-disco and turn-of-the-80s European electro-disco. This is arguably best exemplified via the throbbing, Bobby Orlando-meets-Giorgio Moroder thrust of John Noseda’s ‘Climax’, which fittingly builds to a breathless conclusion as the track progresses. Elsewhere, Perdu brilliantly doffs a cap to Pet Shop Boys’ chart-topper ‘Heart’ on ‘Mind Phrases’ (we think Chris Lowe would approve), while there’s a similar mid-80s PSB feel about the shiny chords, throbbing sequenced bass and memorable lead lines of Kendal’s ‘Mort Sur La Dancefloor’.

Beard In Dust – Señor Paraíso [CR001]

BEARD IN DUST - Senor Paraiso

Initially slated for release in 2019, in the innocent days before the pandemic, the debut release from new label Crudo Ricordi is finally ready for the streets. Three formidable edits from Beard In Dust (AKA Lipelis), all aimed at peaktime dancefloor action. The title track “Señor Paraíso” might sound familiar to some hardcore Italo fans, but this pumped up and extended version hits much harder in the club. The two b-side tracks “Kirkorovmoroder” and “Coconut Paradise” could be recognised by only the most seasoned of USSR synth-pop connoisseurs, both tracks featuring totally addictive and ecstatic melodies.

The New York Models – Love On Video [BAP158]

NEW YORK MODELS, The - Love On Video

An obscure and hi NRG disco stomper from the mid-nineties unearthed by the Bordello A Parigi crew and produced by the one and only Bobby Orlando. It has glistening disco arps and throwback drum machine sounds powering it along with a great female vocal singing lines like ‘You can watch them making love on video.’ The opening Digital Mix is the best for us but the Vanzetti & Sacco cut gets a little more pumping for the peak time so will also come in handy.

Basic – Face In The Night [BAP156]

BASIC - Face In The Night (reissue)

A re-issue of this timeless italo ballad produced by Italian percussionist Massimo Pacciani. The song was recorded in 1984 in Marzio Bennelli’s studio in Florence with an Oberheim OB-X, Yamaha DX7, Marzio on guitar and the great vocals of Riccardo Galardini. They took inspiration from Flashdancers – Maniac (an italo cover of Michael Sembello’s ‘Maniac’) which they recorded the same day in Bennelli’s studio.

Kano – Kano [FTM202101]

KANO - Kano (remastered)

Straight from the immense shelves of the Full Time Production warehouse, here’s a new must-have gem for the Italo disco lovers. Eponymous album ”Kano ” is remastered for vinyl for the first time since 1980 and is given an incredible new life through this remastered version pressed on limited edition hand-numbered vinyl that is deep in grooves and inspiration. The first successful pioneer and ambassadors of the newly-minted ”italo disco”, Stefano Pulga and Luciano Ninzatti formed the core of Kano forging a consistent and memorable sound maintened throughout. This is the sound of an army of buzzing, mini-computers and thickly-slapped bass guitars igniting neon squares across dancefloors worldwide. As such, it sort of straddles the line between italo disco and synth funk. Each of the six songs provides 6 to 7 minutes of danceable delights with lengthy instrumental stretches perfect for nightclubs. With vocals that are a mix of natural, falsetto and robotic, this is an album for boys, girls and androids alike.
