Fall Of Saigon – Untitled EP [DE038]
Dark Entires Records is honored to re-issue the debut EP by Fall Of Saigon. The band was born in 1981 when Florence Berthon (Vocals), Pascal Comelade (Organ, Synthesizer) and Thierry Den (Guitar, Vocals) met at a concert in Montpellier, France. They chose to the name the project Fall Of Saigon after a song by UK post-punk act This Heat. They self-released their debut EP in 1983 citing Nico & The Velvet Underground, Suicide and James Joyce as influences. The 6 songs on the EP were recorded in two stages. “She Leaves Me All Alone” and “On The Beach At Fontana” were sung by Thierry and recorded at Pascal’s home on a Revox 2-track in one shot. The four songs sung by Florence – “Visions”, “Blue Eyes”, “So Long” and “The Swimmer” – were recorded and mixed at the Montpellier Languedoc Video Animation Center by Jean Alain Sidi on two ReVox A77 reel to reels and a small mixer. On “Visions,” “Blue Eyes” and “So Long,” the group employed a drum machine that could only play four or five rhythms with a single slider to increase or decrease the tempo. The songs were minimal: verse, chorus, no bridge, no intro. Built on a simple spine, they create a feeling of space with just a voice and an organ or synthesizer melody. Full of class and inventiveness, Fall Of Saigon are often compared to Young Marble Giants due to the fragile, ephemeral quality of the songs.
Hannibal Marvin Peterson – The Tribe [KSFS04NLP]
The official release of the 1976 recording ‘The Tribe’. Finally after more than 35 years, this essential Spiritual Jazz recording is made available again. Hannibal Marvin Peterson’s unreleased album The Tribe is a sacred collection of blistering jazz assaults and deep reflective spirituals from Hannibal’s ten-piece group. The five tracks on The Tribe fluctuate from propulsive ensemble stampedes supporting Hannibal’s wild solos, to peaceful dreamy hymns. ‘Now Stand’ opens the album, the rest of the group playing catch-up to Hannibal and Billy Hart’s trumpet and drum intro. ‘A Sacred Multitude’ and ‘Of Life And Love And God’ both tap into the deeper, contemplative side of things, Branice McKenzie’s sanctified vocal and Diedre Murray’s cello coming to the fore. ‘Returning To The Ways’ powers along with an uptempo charge not unlike Carlos Garnett’s ‘Mother Of The Future’, but it’s The Tribe’s title track that steals the show and closes the record. Kicking off in exuberant spirit, the track blends heavy riffs and chants with the kind of bluesy changes that characterize Harry Whitaker’s ‘Black Renaissance’, before ending in a foreboding metallic conclusion.
Tony Carey – Explorer And Yellow Power [MR016]
Medical Records presents the groundbreaking electronic classic “Explorer” and its sister LP “Yellow Power” by Tony Carey. (a keyboard whiz from California) In the mid-late 1970’s, he moved to Germany and began working in Peter Hauke’s studio. Here a reissue of the highly-sought after “Explorer” LP along with “Yellow Power” as a 2LP package. Rumor has it that “Explorer” was intended to be demos for the “Yellow Power”. Eventually both of these brilliant LPs were released on X Records in 1982. “Explorer” is the more stripped down almost proto-techno meets synthed out Italo disco while “Yellow Power” has a more polished, well-rounded and produced sound with a different array of instrumentation and alteration in mood. The tracks on “Yellow Power” seem to convey a futuristic sci-fi Japanese motif which possibly explains the beautiful airbrushed samurai warrior on the original cover. Some tracks have sparse vocal samples such as on the lovely “Peking Duck” and “Queen of Scots”.

Population One – Midnight Hours / Two Sides To Every Story [X-DSR003]
Terrence Dixon is the man behind sporadic production alias Population One, serving up dark and heavy, intense and ravey records. Delsin’s re-issue arm has sought to get some of the old tracks out there once again on this double a side 10″ outing with ‘Midnight Hours’ and ‘Two Sides To Every Story’. ‘Midnight Hours’ bangs hard and fast with an unhinged melody line squirming about like an untethered hose. Every surface is frayed and rusted, frosty and splintered making this some of the most primeval warehouse techno you will likely have heard for a while. ‘Two Sides To Every Story’ is just as tough and unruly, with myriad synthesized sounds rushing about in side a framework of incessant hi hats and solid kicks like a bee trapped in a bottle. A controlled frenzy, you might say, but certainly the sort of abrasive and arresting techno that works perfectly in the darkest of basements.
Sam Rosenthal – Tanzmusik LP [MNQ029]
Reissue of one of the top minimal synth Holy Grails out of there. ”Tanzmusik” is the first LP from Sam Rosenthal, boss of the historic Projekt Records label and mind of one of the most influential dark wave acts coming out of the US, Black Tape For A Blue Girl. Originally released in March 1985 and completely recorded at home on a four-track TEAC-2340 with a super minimal setup (Korg Poly 61, Realistic Moog, Boss Dr-110 and some effects), the vinyl release was limited to 250 copies. The album continues in the “electronic mood-music” tradition established by Sam on the Projekt Electronic Amerika cassettes, with the added intriques of the drum-computer, exploring the realms of electronic music. Its signature combination of gothic, ethereal, ambient and neo-classical elements has explored existential themes of loves lost and passions yet to come.
Grand Prix – Mach 1 [SF67987]
Reissue for this super-rare space funk album from 1983, one of the holy grails of the Cosmic scene. Extremely expensive and hard-to-find in the original, this LP was created by legendary French producers Jean-Pierre Massiera and Bernard Torelli (listed here as Areisam and Bernie) and released on French label Savoir Faire. It is a superb example of the duos innovative electronic disco madness, always pushing boundaries while remaining supremely funky. Stand-outtracks are the Italo classic “Challenger” – heady synths, tough bass and astronaut vocals combine in a strange space odyssey, “Cruisin”, a superb electro-boogie style cut with a hypnotic driving bassline, and the fantastic “On The Border”, a tight funky percussive workout whipped by wild space-rock guitars.
Schedelvreter – Hunker (Tear Apart Tapes) [MW034]
Minimal Wave announce a limited edition hand-silkscreened 10” release of Schedelvreter aka Danny Bosten, originally recorded and released in 1985 on Tear Apart Tapes (NL). Danny tells the story of how he recorded these tracks: “I had been making these repetitive, pattern-based Das Ding songs and felt the need to do something a little different. Something more organic, with a narrative structure to it. Reading Shelley’s Frankenstein at the time, and looking at old accounts of Spanish explorers in the Americas, inspired me to make what I imagined as the soundtrack to an imaginary movie: bleak and desolate. I had a Crumar synth that was falling apart, and if you held down a chord and switched it off and then back on, the voltage would drop so the tones became individual blips that sounded like human voices. I made some massive drum sounds by layering noise, used leftover four-track additions in reverse, and included some drums I found on a tape my brother had given me. I just layered it all on the four-track and played along. It made a nice little package of about seven pieces, so I made up a name for it, “Schedelvreter,” which translates as something like “Skull Gobbler.” The tape was released in 1985, but only a few were made at the time.”
Lego Feet – Lego Feet [SKA001CD]
20 years after its original vinyl release, the self-titled EP by Lego Feet – aka Autechre’s Sean Booth and Rob Brown – finally lands on CD, with substantial extras, clocking in at a total of 70 minutes. The first ever release on Skam Records, for many this really is the holy grail of British electronica: pre-dating even the first official Autechre 12”, ‘Cavity Job’. Issued in limited quantities in ’91, the vinyl has never been re-pressed and remains incredibly rare – there’s currently an original copy listed on Discogs for £300. Save for a couple of short segments appearing on Skam compilations, none of the music has been available on any other format – until now.
