Ron Trent – Lift Off LP [RHMC006]

Arriving almost 35 years since he wowed the world with his game-changing debut, the Afterlife EP, Lift Off was inspired by Trent’s desire to ‘let the imagination speak for itself’ while exploring the diverse influences that have shaped his unique musical perspective. A departure from his previous album, 2022’s downtempo masterpiece as Warm, What Do The Stars Say To You, the 10-track set features a mixture of epic instrumentals, inspired collaborations and vocal cuts whose music was written with certain singers in mind. While it features music that ripples with the experienced producer’s familiar aural trademarks – rich rhythms, warm chords, impeccable instrumentation, inspired arrangements, and lashings of heady hand percussion – it also consciously explores a variety of sounds and tempos, in the process blurring the lines between dance music’s past, present and future. It’s a vision, in his words, of what dance music can become.

DJ Steaw – Holding On [PHONOGRAMME52]

Phonogramme brings back a pivotal moment in its history with a fresh repress of DJ Steaw’s ‘Holding On’. Originally released in 2012, the track marked both the label’s debut and DJ Steaw’s emergence as a serious producer. Fast forward to today, and the record has been revived with an added twist: a remix by none other than Ron Trent. Trent’s take manages to build on the original’s deep house foundations, injecting it with his signature Chicago warmth and effortless groove. Alongside this standout remix, Steaw contributes two more tracks that capture his enduring talent for crafting timeless house music. It’s a testament to both DJ Steaw’s vision and Phonogramme’s place within the scene that ‘Holding On’ remains as compelling today as it did when it first dropped.

Simoncino – The Warrior Dances Remixes II [LAX-SE6]

Originally released early last decade, Simoncino’s four-part The Warrior Dance series boasted a mix of inspired original productions and superb remixes. This 12″ contains four of the best remixes, all of which first appeared between 2010 and 2012. Ron Trent’s EP-opening revision of ‘The Warrior Dance’ is little less than analogue deep house perfection – all sparse drum machine beats, bittersweet chords, sci-fi synth sounds and the producer’s usual emotive piano motifs – while Gene Hunt’s take on ‘Do It Again’ is hypnotic, bass-heavy and reminiscent of Larry Heard’s most bittersweet early works. Merwyn of Virgo Four drops two takes on ‘Mystery Girl’: a raw, analogue-rich deep house main mix, and a sparse, jacking and groove-based Dub.

Simoncino – Cosmic Warrior Remixes [HM029]

Given that Nick Anthony Simoncino’s take on house has always been nostalgic and retro-futurist in nature, frequently paying tribute to the ’80s and ’90s work of key American producers, it seems fitting that his latest 12″ boasts rubs of catalogue tracks from two deep house icons, Larry Heard and Ron Trent.

Ron Trent / Other Lands – Yellow Jackets Vol.2 [YJ002]

Mother Tongue keeping the pressure high and unleashing straight away the follow up to the deadly Yellow Jackets Vol.1. This second Yellow Jackets double A sider features Chicago’s royalty Ron Trent and the extra talented multi instrumentalist Other Lands. Ron Trent ‘The Medi’ was actually constructed while riding trains and in hotel rooms through Italy, used as a secret weapon in special occasions…and we can hear why: a mind expanding suite that keeps evolving and going in places and spaces while constantly beating you hard. On the flipside Other Lands brings things down to more abstract realms with the floating almost Kraut inspired jam ‘Matter’.

Blak Punk Soundsystem – Red Cloud [FVW005]

Don Ron Trent re-engages his deep dub systematics with Blak Punk Soundsystem. There are two definitive sides to this story: “Red Cloud” plunges into a swampy, pensive stomp loaded and laced with heavy atmospheres and washes of heady percussion while the “BPS Dub” plays the consummate foil with a roomy, mystic rebuild that maintains the pressure in a soft focus hazy form. As always with Trent, the quality is benchmarks beyond mere mortals’ grasps.
