VA – Djax-Re-Up Vol. 2 [DKMNTL063-2]

The second edition of Dekmantel’s foray into the era-defining, trans-Atlantic, cult techno label that is Djax-Up-Beats, comes another re-issue of classic 90s cuts. Founded in Eindhoven at the turn of the 90s, Djax-Up-Beats quickly earned an international reputation for being a key source of Chicago house, acid techno, and floor-filling, heavy-hitting, straight up underground 12”s. It’s a sound that spawned the sonic aesthetics of today, and can be heard in the left field techno productions of the likes of Bjarki, Salon des Amateurs and other erstwhile analog junkies.” The second re-issue EPs, offer a more introspective look at the label’s earlier releases.

The Strictly Jaz Unit – The Tempest [SJUDLP1]

Astonishingly, 23 years have passed since Glenn Underground and Boo Williams established the Strictly Jaz Unit project, a fluid collective of underground Chicago deep house producers. These days, SJU mainly operates as a duo, and it was this stripped-back line-up that produced “The Tempest”, a rare album-length outing bristling with quality cuts. Every track is naturally dynamic with sonic rich musicality & keyboard melodies. As a whole, the album is far more intergalactic, electronic and sci-fi sounding than either man’s solo productions, with just a few hints of the luscious instrumentation and swinging grooves associated with their previous work. There’s no dip in quality, though, with the dubbed-out deep house hypnotism of “Heard Syndrome”, the Patrick Cowley/Giorgio Moroder influenced “The Struggle”, the Chicago-goes-Yorkshire bleep flex of “Time of Speed, Not Day” and acid-fired gorgeousness of “The Flat (London Projects)” standing out.

VA – Djax-Re-Up Vol. 1 [DKMNTL063-1]

Dekmantel announce the re-issue of some of the most era-defining trans-Atlantic, techno cuts from the early nineties, thanks to cult label Djax-Up-Beats. The Dutch label was responsible for releasing some of underground’s most archetypal underground dance music, mixing together Chicago and European artists alike, and acting as the launch pad for some of today’s biggest producers. This timeless music is being re-issued on vinyl for the very first time. Founded in Eindhoven at the turn of the 90s, Djax-Up-Beats quickly earned an international reputation for being a reputable source of Chicago house, acid techno, and floor-filling, heavy hitting straight up, underground 12”s. This first re-issue volume sublimely blends esoteric, ambient sounds, with staunchly fierce, and energetic electronic rhythms. Throughout the eight-tracks you can hear the sounds of sequencers, drum machines, and motor-city basslines. It defined the beginning of an era that never went away. Whether you’re a collector, or DJ looking to add to the your left field techno collection, the re-issue of Djax-Up-Beats best records is not one to pass up.

Glenn Underground – Escuchame [GR1236]

Italian reissue experts Groovin continue to explore the vast vaults of outspoken Chicago house veteran Glenn Underground. The two tracks here are, naturally, both sought-after and obscure. On the A-side you’ll find “Escuchame”, a cut that originally appeared on a DJ Deep mix back in 2010. It’s something of a driving, body-rocking beast, with the Windy City stalwart wrapping a jazzy electric piano riff (slightly reminiscent of Black Science Orchestra’s “Save Us” and Lil’ Louis’ “French Kiss”) and spacey synth flourishes around a thrusting drum machine rhythm and booming bass. Turn to the flip for the melodious and spacey deep house classic that is “Hi-Tech Soul”, a previously digital-only track first released way back in 2008.

Glenn Underground – Atmosfear [PFG043]

‘Atmosfear’ Glenn Underground’s debut album was originally released in 1996 and set the standard for sophisticated dance music. Dreamy melodies, heavy basslines and acid grooves blend beautifully with jazz vibes and Detroit techno. Glenn Underground is the founding member of the Strictly Jaz Unit. He was raised on disco classics and freeform jazz in Chicago’s Southside, the place where house music was born. Taking inspiration from Chicago’s original pioneers, Larry Heard, Ron Hardy, Lil’ Louis, and the like, Glenn has produced many sought after house gems for some of the most well respected deep house labels such as Prescription and Guidance.
