Willie Burns returns on the great Trilogy Tapes. The title track is akin to traveling in a time machine to 4am on a Saturday night in Den Haag circa 1994 – real grotty basement acid techno! Providing contrast in a way Burnett does so well, the B-side offers two tracks of a more immersive nature, with “She Left In Spring” an exercise in dubby techno as pensive as the title would suggest.
Berlin-based producer Palms Trax offers up the inaugural release for new imprint Lobster Theremin with three slices of Detroit and Chicago-inspired house. Palms Trax and label chief Jimmy Asquith first met at London club night Streets Of Beige, forming a partnership based on a shared affinity for vintage US sounds, analogue workouts, and rough-edged intersections of house and techno. What began as an experiment in pad-driven Detroit workouts soon became Palms Trax’ calling card, the young producer building valve-heated, dust-treated slabs of house in his home studio, shot through with melodic synths and smooth, undulating drum patterns. Cheeky, groove-heavy “Late Jam”, referencing the randier sides of Miami boogie and glitter funk, “Equation”, an original Detroit cut, and “Houses In Motion”, a percussive, balearic-tinged jam, comprise the EP’s three original tracks. Willie Burns turns in a spacey remix of the EP’s opener that hits like an early 80’s drum jam, flipping between off-kilter, warped synths and stripped-down, hammering Chicago house.

Beyond The Speaker is a new label launched by three American individuals with hands in graphic design, DJing and presenting radio shows. These mediums are put to expert usage on the label’s first release, Angels Against Dust, which pairs up two of electronic music’s singular personalities in Legowelt and Willie Burns. Each side sees one production from each producer with Legowelt’s penchant for woozy melodic hooks, rippling percussion and aqautic techno complemented well by Burns’ more meditative, hypnosis inducing arrangements.

W.T. Records boss Willie Burns drops a typically varied EP for The Trilogy Tapes imprint. A label perhaps best known for its super limited cassette releases from underground doyens such as Ben UFO, Kassem Mosse and Madteo. However this year Mr Bankhead has already put out two excellent vinyl-shaped releases from KM/MM (aka Kassem Mosse and Mix Mup) and Dro Carey, and Burns will make it three, with The Overlord EP.
Here we find a couple of heavyweights facing off with one of the centre pieces of Orgue Electronique’s acclaimed “Strange Paradise” album. On the one hand we have Kink & Neville Watson with a swooning but rather pressing epic that unexpectedly turns into a harmonious vortex. On the other hand, we find up ‘n cummer Willie Burns oldschool Jacking the faders with one of the sikkest organic beat tracks.
