Harmonious Thelonious – Metro Tribe EP [DISK19]

Stefan Schwander better known as Harmonious Thelonious is a mainstay of DISK. The Metro Tribe Ep delivers: 3 deep club bangers of trancecending quality. Two of which are also featured in alternative versions – ancient MAXI-style – to suit Selectors needs. Every of those 5 tracks are relentlessly drawing the listeners into loosing themselves into dance, demanding the immediate dissolution of your ego in order to open your mind to the perception of rhythms and sounds echoing imaginary cultural traditions of somewhere far out.

VA – Exit Planet Earth: Strontium [EPE09]

Exit Planet Earth continues its exploration of the world of electro universe with an expansive, extended six track EP, featuring The Advent x Zein Ferreira, DeFeKT, London Modular Alliance, Konerytmi and Zobol. The Advent, whose weekly Gardening Club residency in the mid-90s helped to drag electro out of the realms of the retro and back into the future, team up with Zein Ferreira for a Kraftwerk-on-speed extended mix of ‘CarpeDiem’, before London Modular Alliance’s more moderately paced but still squiggle and bleep laced ‘Lump of Coal’ plus a ‘beats’ breakdown for the DJs. The B-side brings us the acid-powered ‘Pulssi’ by Konerytmi, the bouncy, breakdance-friendly ‘Radar’ by DeFeKT, and the relatively pure, optimistic sonics of Zobol’s ‘Data Wars’. Thumbs up all round.

Rapid Ear Damage – R.E.D. LP [HNRLP031]

With distorted arpeggiated synthesisers and cold metallic drum-machine patterns, William Wiffen from Yorkshire invites you to his sonic warzone. Höga Nord Rekords presents R.E.D. (Rapid Ear Damage), a stripped and harsh take on postpunk, motorik and EBM. With haunting and reverbdrenched synthesizers, Wiffen’s new project sometimes resembles acts like Two Lone Swordsmen in their dirtiest moments. R.E.D. is not a wholesome and pleasant experience. Heavily modified vocals, used more like an additional instrument, breaks through the distorted, hard, backbeat, contributing to the feeling of being trapped in a mental slit trench or bomb shelter: no light coming in – only sound.

Code Industry – Structure [DE303]

Seminal EBM-techno outfit Code Industry surfaces on Dark Entries with a reissue of their Structure EP. Detroit-based musicians Rob Myers, E.N. Sevy, Kyl Crys, and William Keith formed Code Industry in 1989 following their previous project, Code Assault. Among the few Black artists working in the idioms of EBM and industrial during their time, Code Industry tackle issues of racism, the media, and the hypocrisy of patriotism. The band’s frigid synths and menacingly whispered vocals display their affinity for European EBM acts like Front 242 and Nitzer Ebb, but their adventurous production and high- tech grooves situate their work equally within the Detroit techno continuum. The Structure EP was originally released in 1991 via the legendary Antler-Subway label.

Panthera – Synthesizer Hits II [BAP182]

Panthera returns to Bordello, their identity still shrouded in secrecy. Following on from the four tracks of Synthesizer Hits, this unknown entity is back with a further quarter for Synthesizer Hits Vol. 2. Rich melodies and pulsing percussion characterise the infectious “Demon”. Key shifts and samples linger as textured toms and crisp snares keep the energy high. The tempo lowers for the considered “Stallion”. Bright and hopeful bars ascend before breaking to shimmering dawn. The juddering arpeggios and drum rolls of “Newlook” draw us back to the dancefloor. Melodies glow overhead in this celestial composition. The finale is steeped in the unforgettable tradition of italo. A heartwarming tribute to spaghetti dance, Panthera delivers an addictive rift, sparking synthwork and rhythms that are crisp.

DYL – groove 15 [OUT017]

groove 15 is the final release in a series dedicated to attempts to combine ambient with footwork and 160bpm. The person responsible for closing this three-cassette series is Romanian producer Eduard Costea, known as DYL. In his work, he creates minimalist drum & bass structures, which he combines with illustrative music and atmospheric ambient. However, he does not limit himself to these aesthetics, freely changing tempos and moods.
