Anthony Rother – Balkonien [SSPS001]

Dutch label Shipwrec present their next release – a special one-sided pressing – by revered electro specialist Anthony Rother. A pure dancefloor fire that is part techno, part electro. ‘Balkonien’ is a broody affair from the off, with a supple, rubbery bed of kicks down low and a molten synth line up top. As things unfold, a nebulous network of celestial pads spiral about, the drums bounce more and lots of sinewy machine lines dance about and have you doing the same.

The Mover – Waves of Life [FP007]

First ever reissue on Forbidden Planet features four tracks by The Mover, arguably one of the most influential yet underrated artists of the late 80s, early 90s. All tracks were originally released on Planet Core Productions (PCP) between 1991 and 1993.

3.2.6. – Falling [MR002]

Taking it’s name from the address of Ron Hardy’s seminal Muzic Box club (326 N.Michigan Ave, Chicago) 3.2.6. was a short lived project from one Dion Williams, ably assisted by the legendary Armando Gallop and Mike Dunn who lend their mixing skills and individual styles across the breadth of the entire record.

2AM/FM – Starfist Lazerbeam / Passion Of A Nigh [VOS01/MOSDEEP022]

2 AM/FM - Starfist Lazerbeam

Interesting collaborative release between powerhouse labels MOS Deep and Creme Organization. The artists behind the two tracks are Michigan duo 2 AM/FM aka JTC & D’Marc Cantu. ‘Starfist Lazerbeam’ is the first cut and is a slow, purposeful house track run through with a slithering, laser like synth that constantly changes shape. Muffled, filtered vocals are hidden behind and the arpeggiated line eventually lets up and gets a little funky as the icy percussion ticks on. Its a real pressure-building track with curveball melodies that are as beautiful as they are weird. On the flip, ‘Passion’ has raw analogue drums, ticking his and trippy melodies all dancing round each other in old school Chicago fashion. A nimble bassline also dances around the mix, bring with it lots of energy, stylish funk and a real sense of playfulness.

Credit 00 – Basement Toolz Vol. 1 [RAT003]

CREDIT 00 - Basement Toolz Vol 1

Three is the number, Basement Toolz the titel. Once again Rat Life Records is taking Mickey on a night out to the sewer. Here are two tracks made by Credit 00 with a borrowed TR 909 drum machine. Side A is called Korg the Groove, as the title already reveals, it’s inspired by Aril Brikha’s classic Detroit Techno cut. On the Flip side you will find 909ish, one drum machine and one synthesizer, which is not much but all you need and more, plus there is extra noise on the clap to amplify your face slapping pleasure.

Michael Ferragosto – Pissing On Your Head [DIN008]

Robert Crash’s IFM partner Marcello Napoletano returns to his Michael Ferragosto alias who has seen prior releases on Steve Pointdexter’s Muzique Records with a new five track EP. As with all of the other Dog in The Night releases, this 12 is food for the working dj. True to form beating Chicago jack tracks, twisted acid cut ups, and slam dancing warehouse grooves that will get the pit started at your next jam.

Marco Shuttle – Visione [EELP001]

Marco Shuttle releasing his first solo album ‘Visione’ on his Eerie label. ‘Visione’ is a cohesive and compact work, which draws on Shuttle’s design background to unfold an audio narrative with a strong aesthetic approach. With a more abstract sound than his club-focused records, ‘Visione’ retains a cinematic scope while maintaining a common texture of sound throughout the tracks: the detailed productions were created with mainly analogue equipment with meticulously modulated oscillators, creating tracks that are by turns psychedelic, cosmic and sinister

Val_Ex – Riot [SOM030LP]

Solar One Music present a very special project. Arne Weinberg (Valanx) and Robert Witschakowski (The Exaltics) join forces as “Val_Ex” and present their first album. Dark and deep tracks are featured on both sides of this album, the intention and atmosphere is undeniably pure darkness. The common goal of achieving this is audible each second of this record. The music ranges from ambient to electro, industrial and electronica.

Grebenstein – Grebenstein EP [DN063]

The mysterious Grebenstein is the latest artist to grace Downwards. It starts with the searing drones and rumbling drums of “Acting Within Your Terms” before progressing into the utterly menacing tones of “No You Don’t” and “Principles of Trust”. The latter’s dark soundscapes are underpinned by crashing drums and it is this element that makes the final track, “That’s Where The Answer Was, In Your Body” so memorable, as bombastic kicks and percussive volleys underpin the air of gloom.
