Psyche – Re-Membering Dwayne LP [DE061LP]

At the end of 1981, brothers Darrin and Stephen Huss and schoolmate Dwayne Goettel performed for the first time as Psyche in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Their live show was a combination of horror and electronics that was completely unprecedented in Western Canada. Although Goettel and the Huss brothers parted ways before Psyche was to release any material, the masters containing Dwayne Goettel’s performances were preserved in the band’s vaults. Now, 19 years after Goettel’s untimely passing in 1995, Dark Entries records presents ”Re-Membering Dwayne”, the original Psyche-Dwayne Goettel sessions. All tracks were recorded and mixed on 4-track during a single day in March of 1983. Psyche’s early material is visceral and abrasive, a far cry from the sleek, dark synthpop they’d later become known for. Psyche disquietingly conflate the organic and the mechanical, calling into question the limits of the human form. Each LP includes a 12-page booklet with excerpts from Darrin Huss’ diary, unpublished photos of Psyche with Dwayne, and an essay by Darrin reflecting on Psyche’s past and the Goettel legacy as well as lyrics. This collection is a glimpse at the early Canadian industrial scene and the roots of Skinny Puppy. Go take a walk in the past with an ear for the future; you just might learn something.

Lassigue Bendthaus – Matter [DE060LP]

Lassigue Bendthaus is the electro-industrial project of Uwe Schmidt aka Atom or Seor Coconut from Germany. Uwe Schmidt began making music in the early 1980s, first playing drums, then switching to programming a drum computer after he had heard a Linn Drum on the radio. In 1986 he co-founded the cassette label N.G. Medien, on which his first musical work under the name Lassigue Bendthaus, ”The Engineer’s Love”, was released. Soon after, he started to work on what would become his first official record release, the album ”Matter”. The recordings and production began in 1986 and took almost 4 years, until the album finally came out in 1991 on the German Parade Amoureuse label. Musically somewhere between late ”Industrial” and ”Electronic Body Music”, yet already anticipating ”Acid” and ”Techno”, this production managed to cause quite a stir, due to its advanced production techniques. Songs pay strong homage to Kraftwerk, approaching the early industrial dance scene with a softer sequential approach than most of his contemporaries. ”Matter” is a hermetic reflection about the relationship between perception, nature, science, technology and labor. This reissue comprises the entire 1991 ”Matter” LP, as well a bonus 7” record containing 2 tracks never before released on vinyl.

Sandra Electronics – Want Need EP [MW054]

Minimal Wave presents a 6 song EP by the UK/US duo Sandra Electronics. Originally formed as Sandra Plays Electronics by Karl O’Connor in 1988, the project has evolved over the years to become a collaborative endeavor with Juan Mendez (aka Silent Servant). Three of the tracks were first released as an Untitled 10” on Downwards in 2010, and the record quickly sold out. Those songs have been re-edited and remastered for this EP, and three more rare demos and live versions have been added. The songs can be described as hypnotic industrial electronic mantras with enigmatic keyboards and treated vocals. Each track draws the listener in, with its repetitive psychedelic percussion and dark affected vocal.

Soma Holiday – Shake Your Molecules EP [MW052]

Minimal Wave  presents a remastered reissue of Soma Holiday‘s cult classic, Shake Your Molecules. Soma Holiday was a Franco-American duo consisting of Jean-Marc Vallod (FR) and Jane Honicker (US), based in Williamsburg, Brooklyn back in the early 1980s. They recorded “Shake Your Molecules” along with “Too Many People” and “Art Dimension” in 1984. With the help of Eric Dufaure, they had their 12” released on Cachalot Records in the US, and later a further pressing was made by Les Disques Du Soleil Et De L’Acier in France. That quintessential NYC electro / hop hop sound infused with the French New Wave sensibility is what ended up making “Shake Your Molecules” such a unique dance floor hit. This release includes the original “Shake Your Molecules” mix, the unreleased dub version and two other unreleased outtakes of “Too Many People” and “Art Dimension”, all from their 1984 studio recordings at Unique Recording Studios.

Crash Course in Science – Signals From Pier Thirteen [DE059]

Crash Course in Science are a post punk band that formed in 1979 in Philadelphia. The band members, Dale Feliciello, Mallory Yago and Michael Zodorozny, met while attending art school. They began to experiment with crude electronics and off-beat writing. CCIS avoids conventional instrumentation by using toy instruments and kitchen appliances to augment the distorted guitar, drums and synthesized beats. Their first single, Cakes in the Home was released in 1979 and their 4-song 12” EP ”Signals From Pier Thirteen” in 1981. Pier 13 was an abandoned coal-loading pier along the Delaware River near where CCIS rehearsed. The band went there often and was inspired by the huge silent machinery, shapes, shadows, ghosts and debris. The songs ‘Cardboard Lamb’ and ‘Flying Turns’ quickly became club favorites during the early 80’s. This EP’s raw, percussive sound influenced both techno and industrial music in later years. CCIS feel a strong connection to Throbbing Gristle, although they consider themselves as working in a parallel universe rather than being influenced by them. Crash Course in Science go above and beyond what is considered ‘New Wave’ in attitude and sound.

Life Recorder / Semerka – Track Mood [BH008]

Another strong Bokhari release. Beautiful deep house tracks with a hint to early Chicago and bits of the mid 90’s IDM techno wave from the UK. Side a by Life Recorder and flip side by French producer Semerka (incl Fudge Fingas remix).

Simba – Phase Seq One [HOMETAPING018]

New Home Taping artist Simba produces music that is full of soulful echoes, while still dripping in raw house music vibes. Nothing is too straight in the Simba sound as FX drift around and subtle production touches come at you from all angles. Vinyl hiss is as important as the kick drum and the overall atmosphere has that classic house music quality that can transport you instantly to another place. The Black Madonna was the one who drew attention to the rising talents of this young producer. So fittingly she delivers her own ‘Lost In Chicago’ take on the original, which delights in the track’s edginess and the wonderful release of the main hooks. All of which are given the trademark BM Chicago stamp, or should that be stomp Quality house music for the believers out there.

S3A – Bastien EP [HY010]

It may still be early days for S3A but in a short space of time he has managed to carve a niche in the sample-a-delic world of disco and funk fuelled house music, as the vocal sample attests to in the opening track on his latest EP for Hold Youth. There’s certainly no shortage of low-slung goodness to be enjoyed here, From the wistful lilt of “Those Voices” to the rougher tumbling beats of “No More Pretty” S3A has done a bang up job of reappropriating sound sources and working them to his own design, without sounding like yet another knock-off re-edit producer.

Kobosil – MDR 10 [MDR010]

A new name we’re all enjoying meeting is Kobosil, and after a release on Ostgut Ton sub-label Unterton, Max Kobosil appears on Marcel Dettmann’s MDR, not a bad endorsement at all. He delivers six tracks, all of which are good, and starting with the gloomy broken-techno-beats of “Ein”, it moves into the confused computer bleeps of “Asle”, with the A-side concluding with a Giorgio Gigli-sounding “V762_Cas”. On the flip we’re met with the toxic and at some points middle-eastern sounds of a snare-skittery “Path”, while “Oath” is a dirty techno bomb. Finally there’s the industrial ambient “There” score with similar atmospherics to his aforementioned Unterton 12″.

Ø [Phase] – Remixed [TOKEN040]

Arguably the two biggest R’s in techno at the moment remix [Phase], with Rodhad revealing a more emotive side to his techno, while Robert Hood delivers the goods like only he can. Rodhad’s interpretation takes away some of the original low-end heard in “Perplexed”, resulting in something that’s groovy, but still tough, while noticeable increasing the blue-noted tones of the track. Robert Hood’s love affair with “Dirto II” continues with the Detroit legend joining in on the cold temperaments for a clinical and percussively slicing remix. With rapid fire 12″s like this, it seems trying to match Token’s dominance of club techno at the moment would be a futile act.

Head Front Panel – HFP #002 [HFP002]

Some serious cool and banging techno on this 2nd Head Front Panel release, the new Tabernacle sub label with a focus on Techno. Not the looped kinda thing but proper tracks. Techno as techno once used to be… full of energy, cool sounds, exciting basslines, and no taboo’s (who the F**k gives a shit if the tracks are faster then then 125… techno never had any speed regulations). These tracks makes you wanna go to a party and rave all night long.

Delroy Edwards – Teenage Tapes [RAVE005]

Continuing the current vogue for surprise albums issued with the minimum of fanfare we now have Teenage Tapes, a mini-LP from LIES artist Delroy Edwards consisting of production originating from his youth and more recent fare. Those expecting the grizzled ghetto house tools of Delroy’s output for Ron Morelli and his own LA Club Resources label will be disappointed, with this eight track release of untitled productions taking on more of an experimental note. Issued via The Death Of Rave label Teenage Tapes will appeal to fans of Minimal Wave, Diagonal or Gooiland Electro with the fare ranging from frazzled synth experiments to flexing primitive EBM brutalism and unsettling noise.

Joe Drive – Buried Truth [LXRC017]

Joe Drive’s music is always an intricate affair, it spirals you down and never lets you go. His freeform composition dwell within the depth of machines. Exposing their buried truth. It is all there, and yet you can’t see. To enter Joe Drive’s dreams you need a key, Lux Rec provides it.

Roland TR 606, 707, 808, 909, Roland TB 303, Juno 106 and Korg M1 are the ”weapons” which he uses to create his music. All the vocals are his own recordings, using vocoder and fx. Jay Daniel – Karmatic Equations [WOJD01]

Wild Oats come through with the double plated goodness, as the oft-hinted label debut of Jay Daniel arrives in the shape of the Karmatic Equations EP. A resident at Detroit party Fundamentals alongside Kyle Hall, Jay Daniel has been a hot tip ever since he made his 12″ debut last year in illustrious fashion with the rugged Scorpio Rising EP for Theo’s Sound Signature label. Since then, Daniel has become an increasingly regular presence on the European club circuit – recently making his debut at Panorama Bar – lauded by FACT and dropped a guest mix on Benji B. So you could say there was a sense of expectation surrounding young Jay’s next release. The five track Karmatic Equations is likely to be as popular as that SS release, further refining Daniel’s rugged approach with C Side cut “Change 4 Me” and the bumping final track “4 Red” likely to be the cuts most selectors pull for again and again. Housed in a full colour reverse board record sleeve and full colour centre labels, Daniel’s EP for Wild Oats precedes the promised launch of his own Watusi High label later this year.

VA – Pleasure Unit 1 [PLEASUREUNTZ001]

Pleasure Unit is the new label from the excellent Keyboard Masher and it gets off to a fine start here with a selection of reworks from Norwegian producer Telephones that’s been issued in conjunction with the Berlin crew Untz Untz. By no means the most prolific of producers, Bergen-based Henning Severud has nonetheless graced the likes of Full Pupp, Sex Tags UFO and most recently The Very Polish Cut-Outs under the Telephones guise so you expect quality. And that’s what you get as Severud reworks tracks from Skatebard, Love Nation and Dove Station in his own inimitable style. The lead take on Skatebard’s “Confirmation Bias” is a particularly wonderful thing to behold, utilising a whole eight minutes to take flight into what the label quite aptly describe as a long lost Larry Levan remix of Manuel Gottsching’s epic “E2 E4”.
