Tri Fire – Tri Fire [TFTAPE]

Following the success of the Midnight Express single Danger Zone, Robbie M and Terry Patton continued to search for new sounds. Over the next few years the duo would produce dozens of instrumental sketches. Terry always recorded these backing arrangements to cassette tapes so they could easily listen to them later in the car. Cruising the streets of Rock Island IL, vocalist Robbie M would write the additional melodies and lyrics. The plan was to release a full length studio album, combining all parts and adding vocals, but the group dispersed in 1985 before their dream was realized. The Terry tapes, which were never intended for commercial release, are all that remain. When we first heard them, they were inaudible with almost no tones left to preserve, but thanks to a few small miracles and genuine science the shroud of noise has been lifted to reveal an unexplainable haze of funk.

Moon B – Sussegad [PPU048]

Atlanta-based Moon B returns to the PPU label with a new transmission called Sussegad! Both the masterfully lo-fi modern funk of his PPU debut and the subsequent analogue thump of Moon B’s Entropic Feelings 12? for newcomers Going Good have been characterized by a nonchalant disregard for the art of the track title, rife as they are with “untitled” arrangements. Lead track “Oof” was apparently inspired by the producer’s performance at Brooklyn event Mutual Dreaming, so consumed with creative urges after the party was he. Complementing this are two of his rugged gems culled from that aforementioned performance at Mutual Dreaming. Essential cuts for fans of modern analogue funkateering.

Synth funk album by Atlanta Georgia artist Moon B released on Peoples Potential Unlimited. There’s a strong boogie presence across the 11 untitled tracks, but it doesn’t stop at your usual sleazy fare. There are also plaintive moments of refined introspection, and a constant display of production skills, albeit draped in the crust and charm of those archaic music-making means. If you’re a fan of the likes of Dam-Funk and can’t enough of that heady 80s funk flex, then this record should have you bumping and grinding for months to come.

Uku Kuut – Vision Of Estonia [PPU034]

PPU’s first long-play LP highlights some of the early beginnings of one of our favorite producers, UKU KUUT. Written and recorded at UKU’s home studio in Los Angeles and Stockholm between 1982 & 1989. Some tracks co-written with Maryn E. Coote, famous jazz vocalist who had her beginnings in 1960s Soviet Union. ”That’s my MOM” recalls UKU, ”I remember when I was little, sitting under the mixing board at her sessions”. Growing up in studios, UKU’s love of music production began early, and over the years he has amassed a vast collection of domestic and soviet electronic gear. In true PPU style this LP is a mix of UKU KUUT’s raw cassette demos, forgotten masters and unreleased magic.
