To date, each volume in Africa Seven’s thrilling Africa Airways compilation series has been little less than essential. It goes without saying that this fourth installment is also exceptionally good. Whereas previous volumes have focused on Afro-funk and “Afro-psych” (think Sly Stone, Nigerian style), this set drills down into African disco-funk released between 1976 and ’83. Highlights come thick and fast throughout, from the solo-laden, slap bass-boasting bounce of Tala AM’s “Get Up Tchamassi” and Charly Kingson’s squelchy, synth-laden Blaxploitation number “Nimele Bolo”, to the righteous, piano-driven thrills of Kemayo and K-System’s brilliant “Biram” and the superior boogie business of Jake Sollo’s “Tinini Yasana”.

Plugged into the mainframe of the power station, Antonio returns to the label with a barrage of loner panzer funk and mechanised thrash metal from the shadows of Frankfurt’s industrial district. It’s a record fed and nurtured among copper coils, rusted voltage boxes, plasma and ionised sweat coming out to breathe among power surges and industrial smog. Another excursion for the genre independent Borft label. Celebrated artist Obergman delivers a six tracker record for fans of acid and electro. The release is initiated with the drexciyan styled electro track “Germination” with occasional strings that brings some light in the atmosphere of desolate landscapes, followed by the groovy electrotech melodic track “Unexpected Connection” The acid techno workout “Acid Healing” slowly builds with sweet melodic strings into floorfilling potential while the B-side begins with “Inflatable”. A Bass ridden driving acid techno track with ominous melodic stabs that works well when doing a build-up mix into more frenzy territory. The b2 track “Greenglow” explores rocking acid lines bonded by delicate smooth detroit styled strings. Last track of the record, “Universal Hologram”, is a strong beautiful electro track with great electric pulses, melancholic atmosphere and subtle strings.

Analogical Force welcomes Pye Corner Audio for its 10th release. 4-tracker of raw acid jams from the oppressive mind of Martin Jenkins, the man behind the operation. ‘Island of Ghosts’ includes a wild electro remix by Finnish duo Morphology. Needs no introduction: brutal and beautiful.


Nocturnal Emissions has been one of the best kept secrets of the industrial genre since the 1970s. Led by Nigel Ayers, the band was one of the first to use tape cutting, avant-garde art, and underground video works to create a stage experience that was being cultivated by like-mindedartists like Throbbing Gristle and Cabaret Voltaire. The band moved on to using samplers and electronic noise in their early 80’s work, creating a twisted funk sound that would go on to influence everyone from Foetus to Negativland. They still utilized their former tricks, upping the ante with extremist performance art and more professional video displays. The group avoided signing to a major label, instead focusing on releasing their own music more effectively. They followed this path into the 90’s when they started http://www.earthlydelights.co.uk, an incredibly detailed website that promotes their various ideologies (they are strongly against the British monarchy and believe that citizens should have unlimited access to space travel) and constant release schedule. The band has released countless tapes and CDs of their material, and continues to unleash their noise through their website.

Among many of the producer’s aliases and side monikers, Black Zone Myth Chant is surely Maxime Primault’s finest accomplishment as an artist. Having come through via Low Jack’s unfailingly pleasing Editions Gravats over the last few years, he has now begun to establish himself as our go-to man for sounds that truly lie on the periphery of what is deemed normal or sane. Feng Shen is his new LP, once again coming out through Editions Gravats, and it’s a wild, ethereal journey from start to finish. The frameworks are loose and cavernous, but most tracks going further than ambient or drone do contain plenty of rhythmic flow, making them playable on the more open-minded of dancefloors. “Spiritual Decay Dub” perfectly reflects the diversity of sounds on here, their mysticism, and Black Zone Myth Chant’s ability to construct meaning out of sparse sounds.

The 12th chapter on Eerie Records is a 2 tracker by label owner Marco Shuttle himself. With the return to a more groovy and floor-friendly take than the abstract sound of his recently released LP the release maintains nonetheless the classic signiture deep landscapy approach the artist has made us used to with his production. Tribal rhythmics, 808 grooves, underlayed pads and some slightly middle eastern reminiscent sonic elements make it for a record that although still on the leffield side, is 100% techno. Anyone who loved Sing Like a bird will probably find this one very appealing.

Work For Love return with a blinder from the legend Thee J Johanz. Limited edition, the first in a series of two with unreleased tracks and takes from the early nineties.

Berlin’s Mechatronica with a new VA compilation featuring The Exaltics, Drvg Cvltvre, Le Chocolat Noir and Kluentah. The Exaltics and Drvg Cvltvre pack the A-side with gritty, hypnotizing acid burners, relentlessly paced and bound to induce frenzy. On the flip, Le Chocolat Noir and Kluentah (50% of Hamburg duo Fallbeil) dive deep into analogue driven electro trips, culminating with Kluentah’s 9-minute journey ‘Nightliner’.
