Tropic of Cancer – Archive: The Downwards Singles [BLACKEST041]

Blackest Ever Black serve up a double dose of Tropic Of Cancer goodness, with the fresh material from Camella Lobo complemented by this Archive: The Downwards Singles 12″. The smarter cookies out there will glean the content from the title, with Blackest Ever Black gathering together the earliest Tropic of Cancer material issued through the DO sublabel of Karl O’Connor’s Downwards label. These three tracks were recorded in Tropic Of Cancer’s original iteration of Lobo and Juan ‘Silent Servant’ Mendez, a time when the band was exploring a more explicitly bleaker, hazier sound. The motorik stomp and yelping Mendez vocals of closing track “Be Brave” remains a thrilling experience to sink into.

It is the sound of classic German kosmiche, live drums, synths, percussion and a loose funk you only find in these kind of stretched fluid grooves.

Patrick Cowley – Muscle Up [DE106]

COWLEY, Patrick - Muscle Up

Dark Entries and Honey Soundsystem Records have teamed up again to release another volume of gay porn soundtracks by San Francisco-based musician and producer, Patrick Cowley. Perhaps one of the most revolutionary and influential people in the canon of disco music, Cowley created his own brand of Hi-NRG dance music, ”The San Francisco Sound.” Born in Buffalo, NY on October 19, 1950, Patrick moved to San Francisco at the age of 21. He studied at the City College of San Francisco where he founded the Electronic Music Lab. During this time, Patrick, along with his classmates Maurice Tani and Art Adcock, would create radio jingles and electronic pieces using the school’s equipment: first a Putney, then an E-MU System, and finally a Serge synthesizer. He would make experimental soundtracks by blending various types of music and adapting them to the synthesizer.

Kermesse – Mrs Moon [FNGRM002]

A bona fide Italo classic that reminds us why the genre remains as influential and fun to play with; playful lyrics, nagging hooks and forward-thinking synthesis, this would have blown minds back in 1983. To be fair, it still blows minds now. Especially with Danish edit maestros Flemming Dalum and Steen Gjerulff and Italoconnection on remix duties. The former remain faithful to the instrumental version to the very end with slight additional production on the middle eighth while the latter apply more beef in the kicks and arpeggiated bottom end.

DJ Overdose – Housejam Freaker [UTTU052]

DJ Overdose heads over to Unknown To The Unknown for a spot of techno-jackin’. Thrillingly, “Housejam Freaker” combines fizzing, upbeat machine drum rhythms, deep space chords and wild, sped-up Motor City electronics to create something that sounds like the bastard offspring of Jeff Mills, Drexciya and Phuture. Willie Burns provides the obligatory remix, offering something that retains the original’s energy whilst increasing the beauty factor tenfold. Elsewhere, he wanders into deep acid territory on the straight-up jacker “Dikzak”, and delivers a surprisingly funky dose of intergalactic electro on the cheery “Vinca”. A string of handy locked grooves complete a tasty package.

VA – SALT001 [SALT001]

As label debuts go, SALT001 feels like a genuine statement of intent. Run by Melbourne producers Shedbug and Rudolf C (who both contribute tracks), Salt Mine’s first outing touches on a number of contemporary deep house trends whilst retaining the kind of hazy, Balearic feel most associated with the Australian city. Mall Grab & Rudolf C’s dreamy “Untitled (Track 2)” pays tribute to the new age house sounds of Vancouver, while Shedbug’s “End of the Drone” inhabits the ambient techno territory recently visited by Shine Grooves and the Acting Press crew. Elsewhere, Coastdream’s “Untitled 16” sits somewhere between Motor City futurism and the raw rhythms of L.I.E.S, and DJ Phlowgod’s “Summer” is a pitch-perfect analogue jam full of clattering machine drums, boogie synths and jackin’ intent.

Marvis Dee – EP 1: Sailing Over Alpha Moon [DREAMS001]

Marvis Dee opens the newly varnished In The My Dreams imprint with a boogie-led 5-track EP of late-night 80’s house and slow groove-soaked beats. Drawing from the magical influence of the conga-a-plenty TR-727 drum machine along with stomach rumbling basses and glistening synth romanticism conjured from the same machine. Sailing Over Alpha Moon is the first in a 3 EP series exploring these ideas, machines and the nostalgic attachment to things we have once experienced but may not remember. Trapped solely in the memories of others, but returning in our dreams.

Mark Broom / Victor Santana – Helium [CHAVAL014]

The next release on Chaval Records unites its main producer, Victor Santana with one of the masters of British techno, Mark Broom. How much Helium does the Techno you usually listen to contain? This new offering from Chaval has an extra supply of the chemical compound. The best-known use for this noble gas could be to inflate balloons and airships. A chemical element used to both fly to the sky as well as dive to the depths of our seas. These properties are very similar to the techno we like. If you bind two atoms of oxygen to the sun’s temperature then you create helium, and if you join Mark Broom and Victor Santana, you get Techno. The EP features 2 new tracks by Mark Broom and 2 by Victor Santana.
