Omar-S – Desert Eagle [AOS902]

New Omar-S 12″ on his own FXHE Records. Side A, “Desert Eagle” is the type of melodic track that just makes you feel good, with floaty keys over a consistent bass line to keep the feet moving. On the flip is, “Cry Me A River” – a simple yet effective house track that relies on 909 drums, a dusty vocal sample, and strings to put you over the edge.

ASSS – 100 EP [DTLSND006]

At first sight, ‘100 EP’ is the most abrasive techno output of Portland duo ASSS. Alex Smith and Sean Sumler have crafted an excellent four-track assault of propulsive drum sounds filled with industrial textures. Across the frequencies of ‘101’ to ‘104’, dense dynamics and unpredictable manipulation of modules reflect their own spontaneous, improvisational style into a new highly destructive release.

O.B. Ignitt & Omar-S – The 90s Evolution Of What it Was [OBONIT003]

Some three years on from their last collaborative outing – the Wayne County Hill Cops (Part 2) 12″ on FXHE – Detroit producers O.B Ignitt and Omar-S join forces for another trip into Motor City deep house territory. They wisely explore different moods and approaches throughout, starting with the fluid, dreamy hypnotism of “Seem Like You’re All Ready” – an exercise in luscious loops and dusty drum machine grooves. There’s a lovely early ’90s bounce to the evocative synth bass, classic riffs and cut-up vocal snippets of “Follow Me”, while closer “Hold The Line” owes much of its’ instinctive power to a deliciously rubbery acid bassline and vintage US garage drums.

Omar S – FXHE 10 Year Compilation Mix Part 1 [AOS2004]

It’s been ten years since outspoken Detroit house legend Omar-S launched his FXHE label, which is no mean feat for a DIY label. To celebrate the fact, he’s decided to put together the first in a series of mix CDs highlight the much-loved imprints vast discography. Entitled simply 1, the 74 minute vinyl only set takes an entertaining saunter through the label’s bulging back catalogue, showcasing a range of well-known cuts (“Here’s Your Trance, Now Dance” etc) and what the producer calls “some shit [fans] might have slept on”. Predictably, it makes for a sumptuous and suitably groovy blend, moving between bespoke soulful house (Omar-S’s much-loved “Sex”), deep Detroit futurism (Omar-S and O B Ignitt’s “Wayne County Hill Cops Part 2”), dreamy jack tracks (Jason Fine’s “Jack Yo Bodda”) and tactile tech-house (Fit and Gunnar Wendel’s “Enter the Fog”).

Kai Alcé & Omar-S – Jive Time (Unreleased Beats) [NDATL008]

This limited 7″ offers two deliciously simple but bombastically effective drum tracks that should appeal to those who like to pepper their mixes with cute percussive interludes. Both tracks are stripped-down, 808-heavy grooves based on a pair of collaborations with Kai Alce that first appeared on the Jive Time 12″ in December 2010. The percussion is of course spot on, with plenty of repetitive claps, 808 cowbells and, on flipside “Incognigro (Bonus Beats)”, the most subtle of deep house chords.
