Deep Space Orchestra – Memory LP [UOWLP001]

Deep Space Orchestra is Chris Barker and Simon Murray, a pair of mature music lovers who have been DJing and making music for years. When together they conjure up emotive soundscapes full of lithe and rubbery bass, rich synth patterns and authentic real world textures. Never repeating the same trick twice, they conjure up original moods and grooves that don’t rely on trends of the day nor obvious sample pack sounds. ‘Memory’ is a complete piece of work that has been cooked up over the last three years and has largely been born from a collection of gear they bought with a view to starting to play live. As such it finds them experiment with all manner of new sounds and techniques, and the results are triumphant indeed.

Deep Space Orchestra – Memory LP Sampler [UOW007]

Deep Space Orchestra present their debut LP ‘Memory’, released on their own label Use of Weapons and is a perfect culmination of their vast array of influences and inspirations. As a precursor to that set, they’ve delivered this tasty sampler 12″, featuring a pair of album cuts, and a couple of notable remixes from Lord of the Isles and Neville Watson.

Deep Space Orchestra – Hipster Massacre [YCO002]

Deep Space Orchestra return with a double-header of their patented blend of electronic house music. “Hipster Massacre” is the duo’s response to the bland, instagram-obsessed dancefloors of today. Bouncing along on a wave of droning synths, rhythmic vocal snippets and a floor slaying bassline the arrangement takes us through heavy drum machine sections through to sparse dancefloor ecstasy. “Smoking Bunt” goes on a trippy percussive tip, opening with some lush congas and seductive synth stabs before an arpeggiated melody comes rushing in, transporting us to open skies and huge oceanic landscapes.

VA – Use Of Weapons 6 [UOW006]

Deep Space Orchestra’s Use of Weapons label has always been a reliable source of analogue-heavy left of centre deep house, with each split EP, featuring tracks from a variety of like-minded producers, featuring a range of must-have nuggets. This expansive sixth release, with eight tracks spread across two slabs of wax, is no different. DSO’s beautiful and surprisingly fragile “Mendoza” leads the way, with 7 Citizens calming, alien house groover “Fatum” close behind. Arguably best of all, though, is Other Worlds’ “Coldname ELD”, a sparse and bassy concoction blessed with some brilliant, Head High style pianos. It is, though, all good, with further impressive contributions from the Detroit-included Haku.

Neville Watson – One Four Green [TNG004]

Neville Watson’s original ‘One Four Green’ is the obvious highlight, a wiggly bottomed but robust jacker with hands-on drum machine tweaks and lovely melodic developments working just the right side of proggy. Remixing, Deep Space Orchestra beam it into more ecstatic cosmic house zones and Perseus Traxx has his tracky way.

Use of Weapons 5 lands noisily in your back yard with five house marauders hotter than Salma Hayek eating a hot apple pie. Five different artists bring the bacon: label heads Deep Space Orchestra remixing themselves, ex-Cosmic Boogie overlord Asok, Perseus Traxx, Other Worlds and Wet Play executive board member Ruf Dug.

Deep Space Orchestra – Mongolian Nights [QUINTESSE029]

The second Deep Space Orchestra (Si Murray and Chris Barker) EP for Quintessentials is some raw and analogue business topped with the DSO funk. Wolf Music hot shot KRL adds some piano and old school power on his remix and we must admit we’re delighted.

Andy Ash – Get Loose [OTP013]

https://imagescdn.juno.co.uk/full/CS451329-01A-BIG.jpg

Latest On the Prowl 12″ features the return of Andy Ash. As is to be expected with the talented, young producer, the EP is all groovy, bouncy, high-octane house with a hardy injection of disco glitz. Get Loose is what its name implies ;an elastic, fidgety whirl of dancey guitar strums; a heavy bass that pans in and out, mimicking the experience of opening the door to an underground club; and a playful keyboard melody. Love Me Straight is a spacier affair, with a lounge-y pulse and hypnotic synth hook that creeps in, out, and around your ears. The Deep Space Orchestra remix amps up the bass of the original, making the entire track sound like it’s being played under water. And You Show Me is a perfect example of Ash’s trademarks all coalescing into one big pile of shuffling dance floor fun; you can almost see the swirling disco ball lights through your eyelids and feel the smoke machine juice snake into your nostrils.

Ben Sun – Path of Non-attachment [VR007]

A return to VR from Ben Sun, who delves into deeper territory on the original cut; emotive analogue synths washing over a roland drum groove and a swirling female vocal, all underpinned by a warm, rumbling bassline. The flipside features some heavyweight remix work from the prolific Deep Space Orchestra (Use Of Weapons, ART, Delusions Of Grandeur) and label mate Tyson Ballard teaming up with Vincenzo (Poker Flat, Dessous). Vincenzo and Ballard’s mix is a heavy hitting, moody take on the original, with subtle, dark strings and a growling, evolving bassline, while DSO round off the release with trademark fat drums and soaring melodic synth work.

Foto Recordings enlist the talents of Deep Space Orchestra for release number three in the catalog. First up “Riding In My Imaginary Jeep” showcases their trademark old synths/modern production aesthetic to full effect, taking in classic drum machines and warm synth lines to produce an epic piece of deep house. Second track “Sir Shina” sees them doing some deft sample-manipulation with a big chugging midtempo jam the result. Label owner OOFT! is also present with a remix.
