Toby Tobias – Gravitator / Right Turn To Nowhere [ESP061]

Toby Tobias can be found in the shadows of South London. This is his first offering for the ESP Institute. On side A, ‘Gravitator’ evolves slowly over ten minutes from a somber intro of supernatural sighs, pulsing machine feedback and techno squelches into an ethereal landscape peppered with dissonant fragments of synth. With side B’s ‘Right Turn To Nowhere’, Toby stretches out even further, flexing a tasteful programming of the 808 while taking the long road to a reverb-drenched crescendo of distortions and expansive string swells.

Toby Tobias – Rising Son [DOGLP005]

Toby Tobias is ready to drop his second album. Clearly a labour of love, Rising Son touches on many of his now-familiar influences – the futurist synth sounds of Detroit techno, deep house, Chicago jack, Balearica, leftfield boogie, Italo-disco – whilst focusing on a predominantly hardware-based sound that allows his lovingly produced melodies and gorgeous chords due room to breathe. As a result, the album sparkles, with highlights – both dancefloor-focused, such as recent single “Wonder”, and more downtempo – cropping up on each of the double-album’s four sides. It’s actually the more atmospheric downbeat moments, such as the brilliant “Sending Signals” and IDM weird-out “Broken Computer” – that really shine.

VA – Halal Prepared Vol. 4 [BOE028]

The revered Halal Prepared series on boe extends to its fourth volume with four new acts fresh to the label. Hotly tipped duo, Invisible Menders, made up of outstanding DJ Jane Fitz and thus far underrated producer Dom Ahtuam contribute a stunning Balearic bass-heavy house cut “Fifth Time Lucky”. Fresh from his solo EP, John Shima slots in a deep techno workout “Thought Wave”. Toby Tobias of Rekids fame pumps out some raw basement lofi vibes with his jacker “Sword Art Arcade” and rounding off the EP on a delicate note is Tim Smith’s soft and melodic 707 jam “Graphene”.

Toby Tobias – Pathfinder EP [DOGD029]

The title track kicks off and instantly you know youʼre in for a joyous ride with the rawest house-not-house beats, p-funk bass and echoing stabs. Next up Fabrizio Mammarella gets stuck into Pathfinder reworking the original into a slightly straighter, bass-heavy monster of a track which keeps the dubbed out chords but totally wreaks havoc on the bottom end when the bassline drops. Flipping over weʼre treated to the slower paced Backbeat which builds around floating chords, chopped vocals and a boogie-inspired bassline. Finally, Abregon completely defies categorization but manages to successfully fuse elements of jazz, fusion, hi life and house into a brilliantly quirky track.

Hipodrome’s 2012 Review (Part 1)

After three fruitful years of existence and daily careful surveillance of the electronic music scene, I’ve decided, for the first time, to draw a line and make a review of the year that is just closing.

I will make the review in two parts, the first is dedicated to our followers and their choices from this years. So, I will make a list with the most successful post on my blog, the releases that gathered the most likes and clicks in 2012 for our visitors. The second part of the review, will include my own picks and I will present some of my favorite albums of different genders. Also I will make a review of the best parties and acts I’ve attended this year.

Toby Tobias – Messing With My Mind EP [BRK004]

Toby Tobias makes his debut on Burek. Running away is a classic house peak time tune with a 90’s bass line, wonderful melodic synth stabs and a vocal sample which at its peak simply drives people crazy on the dance floor. Tres Mal wins the listeners almost instantly and has all the requirements to become a hit. Cleverly made arrangement, fat bass line and high quality production are filled with an exquisite vocal of Toby’s close friend Be Atwell. On remix duty we have Croatian house talent Homeboy a and Liverpool’s John Heckle.
