K1 – My Name Is DJ K-1 EP [PBXC-37]

Keith Tucker Aka DJ K-1 comes back with his original minimalistic electro style with vocals and vocoder loveliness. The EP harkens back to his original K-1 Agenda ep days of the classic Direct Beat label which spawned the first of Tuckers many aliases. Tucker takes this first original mix into a more Kraftwerking style with his infections and Unforgettable vocoder work. DMX Krew’s Ed Upton takes his stab at a more sample bass mix in step with Tuckers seminal work In the Detroit Techno Bass group Aux88.

Robert Hood – Internal Empire LP (30 Years Anniversary Edition) [TRESOR027LPX]

This album holds an undeniable significance, serving as a cornerstone of both techno and Tresor’s legacy. Its story is deeply entwined with that of the label, following Robert Hood’s Waveform Transmission 2 under his The Vision moniker, released just one year earlier and reissued on Tresor in 2023. On Internal Empire Robert Hood perfected his signature sound already present on Waveform Transmission 2, marking a pivotal moment in techno’s history. It elevates its maker as master, sharing an irrefutable singular magic, sounding as present and indispensable as when first created. To understand this work fully is to stand back and celebrate its impact. Originally released in 1994, the album marks a point of transition for Robert Hood moving on from his previous collaborations within Underground Resistance. Robert Hood advanced, uncovering the power of true minimalism. Deep soul through a simplicity that showed how much could be done with so little. The devastating rhythms of this album forge the unmatched spirit of this sound, influencing generations to come.

Die Gestalten – Kaltland [DERPANTHER004]

Four killer Detroit inspired techno and electro tracks anthems from Die Gestalten, the multiplicitous moniker behind whomever it is that also operates the long-serving German label of the same name. Panther Schallplatten promise no repress, and yet also no “games, faces or bling bling”, offering a tempting tradeoff between limitation and candour. ‘Unsere Waffen’ and ‘Kaltland’ establish versatility enough on the A-side alone, the former track serving an acid aperitif backed up by joggling chord cuts and blooming arps, the latter following on via a nouvelle cuisine “heater” on ice; twinkly cubes inside a sonic seafood chiller, and steamup windowpane breaths in the surround mix. The B-side is a comparative voider , ‘Das Universum’ working in huge hooverish synths and the surprise ‘Vorort’ erring nervous breakdance tool.

Detroit In Effect – Only Time Can Stop A Dream [MAP004TB]

Over 25 years ago DJ Maaco and P Dog aka Detroit In Effect released the mean green “Only Time Can Stop A Dream” EP on their M.A.P. label. Tracks like “313 Frequency” and “Sike Yo Mind”, just to name a couple, banged dance floors from Detroit to Europe. Now with new generations of music lovers almost three decades later catching on to sounds some would now consider vintage, we feel it’s only right to pull out some throwbacks and make them available again. So here’s to old and new, the reissue of Detroit In Effect – Only Time Can Stop A Dream.

Scan 7 – Dark Territory LP [TRESOR057X]

Patience is a virtue well-rewarded in techno; finding the right groove to build on then holding your nerve long enough to pay off the wait at the optimum moment is a much more skillful endeavour than it would seem for such a minimalistic style. And few display this talent better than Detroit originals Scan 7. Part of the hallowed Underground Resistance family, Scan 7 first broke out in the mid-90s with a series of jacking machine funk 12”s that showcased their savvy for self-control – a faculty they have demonstrated in releases year-on-year since. Highlighting this continuous font of vitality, Tresor Records has returned to the source and presents the reissue of Scan 7’s debut LP, Dark Territory. First unleashed on the label in 1996, the album has been remastered from the original DATs by Mike Grinser, augmenting already powerful tracks such as the snake-like, teasing Unusual Channel (mixed by the master Blake Baxter), and the harder-edged VII resulting in music that will, without doubt, provoke an enhanced response when the pressure is finally released.

Theo Parrish – Traffic Jams [SS102]

Detroit innovator and singular soundsmith Theo Parrish returns with a new EP which we’re told is his response to “stagnation and nonmovement” either physiologically, mentally or physically. ‘Positive Mental Attitude Solves All’ is up first and is a tribute to the late great funk-father Amp Fiddler. It’s a typically deep cut with dusty drums and irregular, scruffy percussive lines layered in next to diffuse synth warmth and soulful melodies. ‘Traffic Jams’ plays with similar signature themes and is sure to loosen up mind, body and soul. Another standout bit of work from the venerable Motor City man.

Cybotron – Parallel Shift [TRESOR313EP2]

Astral travel with Cybotron into the meta-narrative of the Parallel Shift, a new sonic fiction that raises many questions about military science of the near-future and the possibility of other worlds. Descending backward through the rhythms of time, the Skynet module retracts from the hyper-structural society of 2100, edging toward the mid-century modern age teetering on the brink of what was then the frontier of “the future”. The system boots the Infiniti process, morphing into a cosmotechnic vessel coursing the superhighway of burgeoning general intelligence, seeking data from just before “the overshoot and collapse.”

Andrés – GT Flips 313-006 [GTFLIPS313-006]

DJ Dez Andres drops new heat on his label GT Flips. The man is a beat-making machine, extraordinary DJ and avid record collector who distils all that house and hip-hop knowledge into his always stylish cuts. ‘No 1’ opens up this latest jam on GT Flips and has a boogie-fried lead synth line, deep drums and chopped vocals that amp up the party but also have plenty of heart to them. ‘Doobie’ is the flipside offering and it finds Andres sampling another 80s soul classic and reworking it over some of his textbook and textured drums that perfectly straddle the house and hip-hop divide.

Body Mechanic – Electrosoul LP [DTR002/DTR003]

Body Mechanic has been turning out definitive Motor City techno on solid labels like Cryovac, and GASS for several years. This time out he lands-on Detroit Techno and serves up, well, some electro. It’s classic 313 tackle though – heavy on the kicks, snappy snares and filthy dirty basslines that make you want to move. Ghoulish vocals add extra grit to the opener and from there ‘Dance’ gets more playful with jittery drum funk and scratching, ‘Beautiful Bum’ has a gorgeously tender and reflective vibe thanks to the minor chords and smooth electro rhythms, ‘Magic (feat Tay) ‘ slips into a deep and soulful house groove and ‘Househead’ is jacked up, loopy and well swung amongst several more timeless cuts.

Suburban Knight – Listening Systems [DTR004.5]

James Pennington is a true Motor City original who will forever be etched into the legendary city’s musical history. Under his revered Suburban Knight alias he crafted the powerful single ‘Listening Systems’ in 2021, initially limited to a spotter-taunting 200 copies, but now repressed – and relax, record buyers everywhere. It’s a deep, warm, driving techno cut stripped back to the bare essentials with a smoky vocal whisper adding the intimacy to a kicking rhythm that is dubbed out and soft around the edges but not lacking in impact. Perfect music for mind, body and head that needs to be played nice and loud.
