Zakmina – Church Of Madness [FBR077]

ZAKMINA - Church Of Madness

Cosmic dance and spatial atmospherics are at the very centre of Zakmina’s productions, as the Lithuanian producer readies an appetizing EP for Dave Harvey’s Futureboogie, backed with a remix from the always on-point Gnork. ‘Church Of Madness’ pumps with oodles of new beat drums and soaring synths, anchored by a fat arpeggiated bassline, whilst ‘Déjà vu’ is a first class chugger, its drums as big as 80’s shoulder pads, with glacial keys and breezy vocals comprising the seductive sensations on offer here. The Balearic synth-pop vibes of ‘Running Amore’ complete the trio of originals from Zakmina, whilst Gnork lays down the lino and tweaks ‘Church Of Madness’ into a solid 808 drum driven ‘Ezoteric Breakdance’ Remix.

Patrick Cowley – Some Funkettes [DE283]

COWLEY, Patrick - Some Funkettes

Dark Entries is humbled to continue digging through the archives of legendary producer Patrick Cowley. While best known for his production on chart-topping cybernetic disco anthems, Cowley, who passed away from AIDS-related illness in 1982, left us with a substantial body of work. Since 2009, Dark Entries has been working with Cowley’s friends and family to shed light on the lesser known facets of this singular artist’s output. ‘Some Funkettes’, the latest addition to this series, is a collection of previously unreleased cover songs recorded from 1975-1977. These raw, unembellished tributes both showcase Cowley’s early musical interests and chart the development of his production techniques. ‘Some Funkettes’ was made possible with help from Patrick’s brother Jim and his former studiomate Maurice Tani. The sleeve is a collage designed in 1975 by Cowley’s former roommate Francesca Rosa that was found covering a reel to reel box. It features a yin-yang symbol and a photograph of a scruffy 24 year old Patrick, to which we added his original handwriting. This peek into Cowley’s formative years arrives just in time for what would have been his 70th birthday.

The Master Scratch Band – The Breakwar [FOX006LP]

MASTER SCRATCH BAND, The - The Breakwar

The Master Scratch Band was first break-dance / hip-hop / electro funk band in Yugoslavia in 1984. The band members were Zoran Vracevic, Zoran Jevtic and Milutin Stoisiljevic, previously known as Data and Sizike. Jugoton, the biggest label in Yugoslavia, published Data 7” and MSB’s ‘Degout’ 12” with limited edition cassette containing two bonus tracks. Impossible to find on the collectors market, Fox & His Friends team in collaboration with Jugoton / Croatia Records is releasing a full, complete version of the rare “The Breakwar” tape, with tracks “Tonight” and “Pocket” never pressed on vinyl. All tracks are sourced from original studio tapes. With the kind help of Zoran Vracevic on credit list and liner notes, this is now the ultimate Master Scratch Band album, released originally in a year 1984 when break-dance was in the peak of its popularity in Yugoslavia. This release is pure breaks and hip-hop electro, done old-school way in one of the best studios in Yugoslavia, Enco Lesic’s ‘Druga maca’ in Belgrade.

Aaron Maple – Awesome Orientalists From Europa Vol. 3

Awesome Orientalists From Europa is an edits project dedicated to awesome music and new politics. Inspired by record labels and DJs that specialise in reissuing ‘world’ music, A.O.F.E. turns the tables on the perception of exoticism by rediscovering obscure and forgotten western dance floor tracks. The music published in the project fantasises about the foreign, tribal and oriental, but was in its whole created in the west, for the west. The third release on the project features three edits by Aaron Maple.

All profits from this release are donated to NGOs that fight Islamophobia, antisemitism and racism in Europe.

Chicco – I Need Some Money [AFS048]

CHICCO - I Need Some Money

Soweto-born Sello Twala emerged as a key figure in South Africa’s bubblegum scene, initially cutting his teeth in the early 80s as part of groups Umoja, Harari and Image, who in 1985 released the track that would give him his nickname: ‘Chicco’. Teaming up with co-producer Attie van Wyk, later that year he released his first single as a solo artist, ‘We Can Dance’. It was followed in 1986 by ‘I Need Some Money’. Both tracks add accessible English lyrics and catchy call-and-response vocals to infectious Shangaan-rooted dance rhythms, appealing to a wide audience that defied apartheid categories and established Chicco as a charismatic solo star, as well as a talented producer, both in SA and across the continent. Based on the success of these breakthrough singles, Chicco would go on to release politically charged pop albums We Miss You Manelow (1987), Thina Sizwe Esimnyama (1989), Soldier (1989) and Papa Stop the War (1990) and Nomari (1991).

SILVANNA & A MAQUINA DO TEMPO - Hotaru Edits

Hello Sailor Recordings is back with its first (and last) release of 2020, this time with another excellent addition to the beloved 7” series. The chaotic sounds and lyrics of ‘Sera que eu to Pirada’ originally released in 1995 by short lived band Silvanna & A Maquina do Tempo, feels current amidst the challenging times we face and it’s accompanied by ‘Vem Viver Pra Mim’ on the flip side. Both songs were elegantly edited by Sao Paulo mystery producer Hotaru for this Brazilian holy grail of early electro and proto-house.

Zero Call – Stellar Wind [OR81]

ZERO CALL - Stellar Wind

The italian project Zero Call produces pure Italo Disco with perfect brushes of EBM- infused retro synthwave. Beesmunt Soundsystem / Cooper Saver – HVN E/F [HVNEF]

BEESMUNT SOUNDSYSTEM/COOPER SAVER - HVN E/F

The Hivern split series was born as a platform for club-ready tracks that don’t require a broader sonic context to express themselves. It’s also as a way of generating an unplanned dialogue between artists in the label’s orbit, connecting the dots amid them in spontaneous and almost unconscious ways. The third installment of the series brings together Beesmunt Soundsystem and Cooper Saver. Their two tracks share a similar approach, deconstructing ethereal sounds over dark rhythmic foundations to reach the same kind of narcotic transcendence.
