To kick-start Artificial Dance’s 2018 release programme, the label has once again delved deep into the darkest corners of the Dutch electronic underground. The result is a debut solo EP from another future hero, Hague-based Pasiphae. Born in Greece, Pasiphae took up DJing and music production when she moved to the Netherlands five years ago. The Siphax EP is her first solo outing. Packed with mutant alien funk (the superb title track), horror-fired dancefloor dystopia (throbbing opener Tachynons’) and skewed electronic soundscapes ( Vertical Rotation’, which sounds like it could have been taken from the soundtrack of an early ’80s art-house movie), the six tracks offer a neat summary of Pasiphae’s unique musical world. Check out, in particular, the two-part murkiness and late night hum of ‘Quelque Chose De Mauvais’ and ‘Quelque Chose De Mal’, which are creepy and clandestine in equal measure. If that’s not enough to set the pulse racing, turn your attention to EP closer Hedera’, a beat-less but rhythmic romp through muggy, psychedelic pastures.

Dark Entries and Sacred Bones team up to release the early discography of UK synth-punk and Deathrock label Outer Himmalayan Records. Between 1979 and 1982, Nick Blinko and Martin Cooper’s Outer Himmalayan Records released 7-inches by three short-lived bands – The Magits, Soft Drinks, and S-Haters – who would nonetheless cast a massive shadow on the UK’s burgeoning post-punk/anarcho punk scene. Outer Himmalayan Presents collects all of the music found on those original records, along with rare and unreleased tracks by all three bands. It’s a snapshot of a period of frenzied creativity by some of the UK’s most thrilling experimental punks.

Transcendent Records presents a new immersive cinematic techno release by a French producer who goes under the name of Ersatz Olfolks. Heliopolis is the city of the sun and was the theological center of the greatest sun temple of pharaonic times. The sunrays bring brightness but we also find ourselves in the darkest ominous shades of an eclipse. We were instantly captivated by his contra dictionary sound that is filled with subtle harmonic distortions and sophisticated melodic and evolving modular patterns. The debut album by Siberia-born, Moscow-based artist Margenrot aka Lusia Kazaryan-Topchyan – a dark and mesmerising journey into the subterranean, inspired by her Armenian roots and murky sounds of 80-90s industrial music. The album shares its name with a conflict-ridden historical region in southeast Armenia. Margenrot’s inspiration, however, goes beyond geopolitics, and is rooted in the myth of the region’s name. According to Armenian folklore, the name Zangezur came into use after Timur’s conquest, who conquered the Syunik province after a renegade Armenian prince sabotaged the area’s alarm bells. As the province fell, its inhabitants wondered why the bells never rang, giving birth to the phrase “the ring is in vain,” or “zange zur” in Armenian.
