Lucy – Reworks [SA10YEARSEP]

With the ‘Lucy Reworks’ EP, label head Lucy, nom de techno of Luca Mortellaro, revisits four pivotal tracks from his label’s peerless catalogue. In their original form, these tracks from Donato Dozzy, Caterina Barbieri, Lucy & Klock and Xhin each represent significant and deeply personal moments for Mortellaro in Stroboscopic Artefacts’ history. And like the recent ‘Ten Years Of Artefacts’ album and the currently ongoing tour, this EP is a chance for Mortellaro to look back fondly at the label’s past while closely considering its present and its future.

VA – X: Ten Years Of Artefacts [SA10YEARSLP]

Stroboscopic Artefacts releases ‘X – Ten Years Of Artefacts’, a 13-track album curated by Lucy aka Luca Mortellaro. It celebrates ten years of his label by boldly confirming its raison d’être: a continual redefinition of modern techno. X – Ten Years Of Artefacts’ is a various artists album in which the label’s key artists respond to its tenth anniversary with fresh compositions. Artists with divergent perspectives and MOs are equally at home expressing themselves. These tracks’ timbres, tempos and moods differ greatly yet—somewhat improbably—they seem together, ideologically unified. The compilation features tracks from Lucy, Rrose, Zeitgeber, Lotus Eater, Shifted, Efdemin, L.B. Dub Corp, James Ruskin, Denise Rabe, Adriana Lopez, Chevel, Alessandro Adriani and Serena Butler.

Lucy – Finnegan [CURLE041]

Lucy makes a return to Curle with Finnegan, a 12″ release made all the more intriguing by the presence of two Pariah remixes. “Finnegan” is a prime example of Mortellaro’s trade, lurching forebodingly through the dark recesses of chugging, industrial techno for nearly eight minutes. Pariah’s two remixes retain the dubby aesthetic while transplanting the track into more relentless, driving territory. The Dub mix is markedly harder in execution, sounding like a halfway point between his solo productions and his techno-focused Karenn project with Blawan.

Lucy – Monad X [SAM010]

LUCY - Monad X (Front Cover)

Lucy’s Monad X plays with Pythagoras’ vision of ‘X’ as the numeral that perfectly envelops the entire nature of numbers. But Monad X is anything but a benign portrait of creation. On ‘Triad’ primal dub erupts into gnarled noise, the undercarriage of ‘Tetrad’ writhes unset – tlingly against the strictures of 4/4 and ‘Pentad’ is underpinned by a decidedly ghostly aesthetic. To close, ‘Decad’ hovers over a vortex and it’s here that from the Monad the Dyad starts to emerge.

Lucy – Wordplay for Working Bees [SACD001]

With ‘Wordplay for Working Bees’ Lucy creates a blueprint, not just the departure point for the full length format according to Stroboscopic Artefacts, but he also lays down new possibilities for the techno album. Refusing the obvious 4/4 route, Lucy traverses the widest possibilities of electronic music. ‘Wordplay for Working Bees’ encompasses IDM that leans towards drone, puckering, dub-filled techno and ambient in its most oblique forms. The beloved character of Lucy’s DJ sets, the way he layers tracks to find unique timbre and tone, is reflected in his studio approach. Lucy’s debut album results in the most delicate and delicious juxtapositions, as the unexplained and unexpected tangle together in the ear.

Lucy – Beelines For Working Bees [SA008]

‘Beelines For Working Bees’ is a 12” that sees four of the most innovative artists in electronic music rethinking and reconfiguring the strands of Lucy’s forthcoming album ‘Wordplay for Working Bees’. The relationship between the point of origin and the end point is not a prescribed one: the beelines of Tommy Four Seven, James Ruskin, Peter Van Hoesen and Truss return to the hive of Lucy’s album taking the most experimental and cross-pollinated paths. SA008 acts as a case in point for techno, melding and fusing genre boundaries to reveal new hybrid sounds. SA008 presents a utopian vision that’s puckering at the seams. The artists chose the tracks that they wished to remix and fused their own defined sound identities with that of Stroboscopic Artefacts. In anticipation of Lucy’s debut album this is a delicious foretaste of what’s to come and a cryptic insight into four of techno’s leading minds.
