Marcel Dettmann – Fabric 77 [FABRIC153]

DETTMANN, Marcel/VARIOUS - Fabric 77

When it comes to DJing there aren’t many names as trusted as Marcel Dettmann to provide the essential mix, be it in CD or podcast format. To date he’s curated the second installment of Ostgut’s in-house Berghain mix series and the Conducted mix for Belgian label Music Man. So it’s about time Fabric invited the Berghain resident to participate in their own mix series, with this 77th edition providing a selection mostly based on unreleased MDR demo tracks that Dettmann’s been utilising in his sets for years. The result is a good primer for what to expect from his label in the future, with Answer Code Request, Norman Nodge, Ilian Taper Dario Zenker and French producer Marcelus amongst the high-profile names contributing unreleased productions.

Versalife – Collision With The Past I [FR029]

Sometimes people from different environmental backgrounds cross paths with one another through similar interests, and they notice that they have more in common then a certain taste in music alone. Boris Bunnik (aka Conforce) is hailing from the small scenic Dutch island Terschelling, that can be seen as the complete opposite environmental background as the dirty streets of Rotterdams South Side that drew the first guidelines for Frustrated Funk’s watchword: Mad Drama From Everyday Life. Although the background is opposite, the drama and struggle of daily life seem to have more similarities then one would expect. Struggling creative minds searching for correct paths, fighting to keep focused with daily routines, burning ships, moving forward, trying to bend negativity into something positive, writing music as an outlet for their compulsive need to create. This is our game. No hits, no hype, no bullshit, just the real deal, bringing timeless techno from the heart that will always stay untouched. So here’s FR029, experimental techno from the young master mind thats Versalife.

VernoN – Bud XXL EP [RWT-1]

VernoN switches to Romansoff’s Raw Tools imprint. As you might expect, the Bud XXL EP is jam-packed with intense machine rhythms, body-shaking electronics and twisted acid lines. As a result, each of the three original tracks tiptoes that fine line between jacking analogue house and raw techno. There’s a vintage Chicago feel to “It Ain’t You”, while “Keep On Dancing” layers a flurry of cowbells atop a jaunty bassline and delay-laden machine grooves. The real killer, though, is “Bud XXL”, a spiraling, in-your-face concoction that sounds like a signifier of a coming apocalypse. Glaswegian-in-Bristol Marco Bernadi reworks “It Ain’t You”, turning it into a freaky chunk of alien funk complete with mutant Detroit synths and chugging drum machine rhythms.

DJ October – Gate 2 Yesterday [SKUDGEPT011]

October is back with his first solo 12″ after appearing on Fred P’s SPM label last year. Both cuts will please lovers of October’s trademark slow techno sound and also hint at the industrial influences which he explores more heavily on his debut LP, forthcoming on Skudge White.

Ben Sims & Kirk DeGiorgio – Raw Hide [MACHINE003]

Four peak-timers incl. a special club edit of the popular ‘Rawhide’ track, and Degiorgio’s ‘Dread’ appears on vinyl for the first time after it’s inclusion on Sims’ Fabric Mix CD. Funky and uncompromising as always – this will be a mainstay in Techno sets.

Jared Wilson – Ghost Miners [7777007]

Killer debut release from Jared Wilson on his own label 7777. Wilson states the album draws inspiration from the literal underclass. “Ghost Miners is influenced and dedicated to all those who have worked and lived underground, from gold miners in South Africa, copper miners in the 1800s in northern Michigan, the mole people of NYC to orphans living under Bucharest.” Raw acid and techno of the highest caliber.

LA-4A / Matrixxman – Split EP [DELFT004]

LA 4A/MATRIXXMAN - Sweat

Two tracks each from Delft label boss LA-4A and comrade Matrixxman with a featured appearance by Vin Sol. LA 4A’s lead cut “Sweat” it’s acid techno that straddles the perfect temperature between lukewarm and too hot. The A2, “Harness”, still has an acid vibe, but this time around it sounds more like Plastikman beaten down and remixed by the Restoration crew. Meanwhile Matrixxman delivers gritty flexes of rave in a track that fluctuates between something like Yello’s “Oh Yeah” and Claude Von Stroke’s “Who’s Afraid Of Detroit”, while “Acid City” sounds like Steve Poindexter’s “Work That MotherFucker” with DJ Pierre on the 303.

LAHJ – Miller SC [CCCRAW003]

LAHJ on the Crow Castle Cuts label. The four tracks here more than match the calibre of previous CCC output, with title track “Miller SC” a wonderfully dark yet playful groover with some blinding organ stabs. “Womb” finds LAHJ dip into acid fried techno that feels like it was recorded straight to tape, whilst “The Tinley Effect” strips things back to a more minimal thrust that allows more of the analogue feel to seep through. This leaves “Gears & Greas” to close proceedings in a jerky, rhythmically unpredictable fashion that would appeal to the Pudel crowd.

Randomer – Russian Torrent Versions 10 [CCCP010]

Randomer aka Rohan Walder on the Russian Torrent Versions. Of the three productions, lead cut “Side Crack Lung” is the one the more adventurous selectors will gravitate towards, with a complement of vocal samples and degraded synth lines getting racketed around the channels by a tunnelling gutter techno rhythm. “Fun In The Sun” is pure screwface techno whilst the delicate sounding “Odd” ends matters on a suitably strange note.

Anthony Naples – Zipacón [TTT026]

Anthony Naples hooks up with Bankhead again for what looks and sounds like a sequel to last year’s much loved El Portal 12″ for The Trilogy Tapes. Apparently named in honour of the hospitable reception young Anthony received whilst playing a party in the Columbian town of Zipacon, this four track release opens with “Perron” which sounds like previous Naples hit “Busy Signal” hollowed out. From here, “Zipacon” feels like a real high point with fizzing, intricate drum patterns and a warbling pad line that really captivates. Flipside cut “More Problem” offers a undeniably booming interlude before Naples gets really bugged out on the excellent “Crazy Spirit”.

OLIVERWHO FACTORY, The/DEADBEAT/NICK HOPPNER/MAKAM/MARCEL DETTMANN - Panorama Bar 06 Part II

A second 12″ sampler for Ryan Elliott’s soon to drop Panorama Bar 06 mix opens with “Take It Slow”, a rugged house jam of the finest order from The Oliverwho Factory and proceeds to take in cuts from former label manager Nick Hoppner, Deadbeat, Dettmann and Sushitech mainstay Makam. Individually the standard of these exclusives is remarkably high and it will be interesting to see how Elliott has slotted them all together for the free to download mix. If we had to guess, Deadbeat’s superb glistening house burner “Woah” would make an appearance towards the end thanks to his high tempo, whilst Dettmann’s swirling layers of ambience on “Light” feel very much like a set opener.

NEWWORLDAQUARIUM/ROMAN FLUGEL/TERRENCE DIXON/BORROWED IDENTITY/TUFF CITY KIDS - Panorama Bar 06 Part I

It’s the onset of a brave new era for Ostgut Ton as Panorama Bar 06 signals the label’s decision to halt the manufacturing of CDs for their much loved series of mixes. Due for free download via the Ostgut site on August 11, the Berlin operation have not forgone the vinyl format with all the exclusives gathered by mix curator Ryan Elliott pressed up across a pair of 12″ samplers. And boy did Elliott call in the favours with this first sampler featuring new and unreleased music from Newworldaquarium, Roman Flugel, Terrence Dixon, Tuff City Kids and Borrowed Identity. It is an overall exquisite selection, running from the ambience of NWAQ’s contribution to Flugel’s big room stomper and the sweeter, more playful sounds of Tuff City Kids and Borrowed Identity.
