Phuture – Acid Tracks [TX142RED]

Phuture only released a handful of tracks (plus an album a full decade after their debut), but have remained a legendary act in the development of Chicago house for their stomping 1987 single “Acid Trax”, the track that began and defined the acid house sound. The group was formed by DJ Pierre, synthesizer fan Spanky and Herb J in 1985 as a recording entity to produce records for Pierre to mix into his sets at several crucial Chicago clubs. After being turned on to the high-pitched squelch of the Roland TB-303 synthesizer (marketed as a bassline machine for solo guitarists), the trio emerged from the studio with a track they called “In Your Mind”. Ron Hardy previewed the track at his legendary club the Music Box – where it became known as “Ron Hardy’s Acid Track” – and Phuture re-made the cut with production by Marshall Jefferson. Released on Trax Records in 1987, the single created a dividing point between the Chicago sound before and after it, with hundreds of “Acid Trax” imitations flooding the local market. After it caught on in Britain as well, the single soundtracked the wave of club madness which coalesced in the rave movement by the end of the decade.

Radio Slave – Command Z [RSPX20]

Rekids boss Matt Edwards debuts on Rekids Special Projects under his prolific Radio Slave moniker with ‘Command Z’, marking the twentieth release on the offshoot series. ‘Command Z’ opens with roaming synth patterns, slick kicks, delicately placed plucks and a haunting soundfloor which gives a sense of allure alongside it’s thundering rhythm. On the flip, ‘Command X’ situates itself perfectly for cavernous warehouse spaces or intimate club environments with its rattling snares, arpeggiated keys, lively saturated claps, rawly reversed pads and rippling cymbals.

Cucina Povera – Tyyni [LSSN067]

Tyyni is the third album by Finnish-born sound artist and musician Cucina Povera aka Maria Rossi. The second album recorded using a more studio-based scenario – as opposed to last year’s Zoom, a collection of in-situ, spontaneous recordings – Tyyni feels like a slowly unfurling mediation on the clash between nature and mechanical living, a rumination on the complexities of modern life that begin to unveil more about the inner landscape of the artist as it progresses. A Finnish word referring to still, serene weather, the title belies a new note of turmoil in Cucina Povera’s soundworld. Tyyni represents a more detailed focus on the sculpting of sounds that curl around Rossi’s hymnal vocal performances. It’s a more adventurous work than Rossi’s previous output that goes further into noise elements and vocal abstraction while maintaining the balance and ecclesiastical ecstasy of her debut Hilja.

Type-303 – Sysi EP [SRTX030]

30 releases in and Super Rhythm Trax celebrate with this beautiful record by Finnish producer, Type-303 with an EP that faces off the lushest most uplifting Acid music against the rawest and dirtiest end of the genre. ‘Delays’ sounds almost like an early UR record while ‘Code 808’ is an absolute masterclass in bliss, complete with it’s vocoders, electro drum track and singing 303s. Sandwiched between these two tracks you have the cheeky suggestiveness of ‘Kolkki Crush’ and the outright sleaze of ‘Life In Mono’.

Subfunk / Mac & Rudedog – Untitled [MC039]

A fine slice of deep tech-house runnings from the turn of the millennium, Subfunk & Mac & Rudedog’s ‘Untitled’ EP is a thing of intensity! 4 cuts of that wiry machine funk that sounds like it dropped out of the sky only yesterday. It’s all here, for your ears, tripped out minimalism, dubbed out drum programming, lithe chord patterns and basslines to die for. There was certainly something in the water back then, records like this capture the era perfectly and that’s why they are so sought after. A rare record, the ‘Untitled’ EP manages to bridge the eras, and will undoubtedly find a place along your favorite UR / Motor-city records, they’re all forging out the same sonic territory.

Ike Release – Prophecies EP [EPISODES009]

Compression and expansion, focus and surrender, tension and release – the elusive state of balance is less of an inert, perfect condition than it is an interaction or moderation over time between polarized points. Rarely is it defined nor clearly prescribed. Through careful examination of the factors and conditions involved can a possible pathway be uncovered, in any particular scenario. The attached transmission is not a declaration of balance, nor a prescription towards it. But rather, it is like a snapshot captured of an object in motion.
