“Folk Triumfator”is the second album by Zandvoort & Uilenbal, a ‘paramusical academic’ project of medieval music expert Jimi Hellinga and electronic musician Danny Wolfers. As Zandvoort & Uilenbal they appropriate historical instruments such as a 19th century Victorian harmonium, a medieval hurdy gurdy, an electro acoustic thumb harp and an mid 20th century German Mixtur Trautonium. These are cross bred with the usual arsenal of contemporary electronic instruments and seasoned with some sinister poetry in their North Sea coast temple of sensory sonic delights. We can write how conceptual and arty this all is but let’s just say this is hardcore dark ambient with lots of medieval drone space jazz influences to trip your mind out into a region where time and your opinions cease to exist.

For their third release Magnonic Signals have recruited Aquatronics, a producer whose previous releases show off a penchant for electronics that steer towards a drexciyan sound palate and ethos… The EP kicks off with (+) Wave Gliders a bubbling electro burner with deep warm pads and fizzing 808 drum programming accompanied by thick hypnotic melodies, really sets the tone. (++) Ocen Myst takes us deeper into the abyss with a wonderful low end and glassy synth lines taking centre stage, beautiful and sorrowful electro. (-) Deep Horizons, the title track, is the kind of electro that takes you on a journey through the depths of the pacific ocean, lush warm pads and synths lines full of emotional content, wrapped masterfully over snappy snares and shimmering hi-hats, this track has it all. (- -) Twilight Dive closes the ep in great style, a fat low end over a cracking 4/4 to create a superb electro/techno crossover, a track that is sure to set dancefloors alight. From start to finish this is an EP of pure electro bliss and not one to miss.

But its the the flip side where Nill Minogue comes into his own. This side blends a shift towards a home listening vibe as well as being suited to a more discerning dance floor. The tracks The Green Strobe and Not Them are slow drifting builders and full of lush pads that float along endlessly. Berlin club and party-starters Sameheads return to black wax with “ZEUG!”, a 4-track EP from various celebrated artists, who join forces in new and unheard ways for a stack of outernational and spaced-out dancefloor jams for creative dance floors worldwide and beyond. First up is Mameen 3 (a side-project from Brussels selector DJ Sofa) & Romanian pioneer Rodion G.A with ‘Planet Cluj’, a suitably off-world excursion through a fun-packed disco hall in some far-off colony where layered synths are stacked, elements seeping through one another to form a mesh of groove. Anatolian Weapons’ cosmic fireside ritual, ‘Chant 3’, heats up the A2 with vibrant and punchy percussion loops woven together with a worldwide chorus of chanters. Building continuously, the tough workout is dosed up with a bassline saturated in attitude for a high-energy finish. Picking up on the B side are KRENG, who slow the pace down with a latticed beatwork combining robust dance formulas and blasting syncopation. Letting the rhythm do the legwork for the first half of the track, the pair then pour out a sludged mess of grime-infused bass over the percussive chaos. Silvia Kastel and Wilted Woman close proceedings as SHAKEY with a dubwise workout that straddles b-side house obscurity and stoned live dub improvisation: steel drums patter at the windows of Paradise Garage as Larry Levan fights off the vampires alongside Scientist.

Appearing on Echovolt for the very first time, Vancouver-based producer Wolfey offers up a four-track excursion that draws direct inspiration from the often-rainy climate of his sleepy home city. “Powell St. Blues” E.P. is a dance record of rare emotional depth that sees the Canadian bring out an impressive amount of warmth and soul from the machines he uses to make music. Drawing inspiration from early house and techno producers out of Chicago, NY and Detroit, Wolfey likes to work with a small selection of synthesizers, drum machines and outboard effects processors – only using the computer to record, edit and mix-down long multi-track takes and improvised jams. The resultant tracks bristle with vivid detail and texture while evoking distinctly hypnotic and alluring atmospheres.

It’s been a while since we last heard from Steve Summers, one of the many musical aliases of producer Jason Letkiewicz. When he last landed on proudly Chicagoan imprint CLEAR with the robust and unearthly “Artificial Light” EP, it was on the back of nine years spent building up Steve Summers as a purveyor of forthright club cuts that pushed at the limits of acceptability. Now Letkiewicz’s return with his Steve Summers pseudonym on CLEAR is defiantly intense and otherworldly in tone. “Counter-Factuals” is powered primarily by the kind of psychedelic acid lines and thrusting machine drums that have long been a hallmark of Chicago house. This is no nostalgia-fest though, with Letkiewicz’s take on “acid” being more abstract and unorthodox than the music of his predecessors.

The excellent Black September, a continuous, five-part, 68-minute epic, is as formidably competent as ever, although more for the brooding, surreal nature of its soundworld than for its grooves, which here sound almost subsidiary. The soul samples and restlessly evolving minor-chord kaleidoscopes that unfold throughout the work is prima facie evidence of a musician on a roll. Boldly named after one of the most notorious Palestinian terrorist organizations, the group which carried out the Israeli Olympic athlete massacre in 1972, September matches it’s dark black artwork and design with equally doom-laden music (mastered as one track, despite the five separate song titles listed on the back).

Another slice of essential Knuckles / Principle magic, here the duo’s love of Italo and Euro pop records seems to collide with Chicago’s darkened dance-floors and raw drum machines. Perfectly sleazy and insanely danceable, Jamie Principles voice was made for Frankie Knuckles pristine productions and their unique styles compliment each other endlessly. Both tracks featured on this 12″ take us into the subterranean night life of Frankie and Jamie’s world, a world of yearning, heart-break, love and acceptance. A huge pairing of tracks on their initial release and still to this day some 25+ years later, “It’s A Cold World / Bad Boy” was a total game changer, almost verging on pop but too “outsider” to gain the mainstream attention it so deserved, the record stands today as a true classic.
