YOUAND THEMACHINES - Behind Reshaped

youAND:THEMACHINES is the solo moniker of Martin Müller, one half of the Berlin based luminaries youANDme. A year after the release of his ‘Behind’ LP youAND:THEMACHINES presents ‘Behind’ LP Reshaped – an opulent collection of selected edits, interpretations and remixes courtesy of a prestigious roster of distinguished producers including Matthew Herbert, Steve Bug, XDB, Boo Williams, Sascha Dive, Legowelt, Marko Fürstenberg & Luke Hess and Basic Soul Unit amongst many more. ‘Behind Reshaped’ mines deep beneath the original’s surface and is a varied compound of textures, tones and atmospheres. From Steve Bug’s glacial ‘Raw and Reduced’ edit of ‘Drift’ to The Analog Roland Orchestra’s allaying take on ‘Desire’ and from XDB’s armoured and clap-heavy remix of Perception to Freund der Familie’s lucidly textural version of ‘Entrance Room’ the listener is ferried through a broad spectrum of feeling whilst a spectral and rueful current remains consistent.

Kyodai – Moving (Basic Soul Unit Remixes) [LTX002]

https://i0.wp.com/images.junostatic.com/full/CS2287207-02A-BIG.jpg

Toronto’s Stuart Li aka Basic Soul Unit has made not one, not two but three interpretations of Kyodai’s Moving. Some deeper & dark electronic house biz. Basic Soul Unit’s ‘BSU Basement Mix’ is a typically taut affair with the rhythm swinging, great panned synth hissing, compressed piano lines and a rumbling bassline. Flip for the ‘BSU Attic Mix’ which swings less, nailing everything to a wobbling sound system bassline and stiff rhythm track.

Basic Soul Unit – Motional Response [STILLMCD008]

Through the years, Basic Soul Unit has established a solid following for his quality melodic techno. “Motional Response” is a work of art. A finely crafted suite of ten tracks where elaborate techno rhythms battle with intricate synth harmonies to create a genre defining full length. Throughout this album, 303s, 909s and 808s are a constant nod to Basic Soul Unit’s Detroit and Chicago influences without ever compromising his melodic vision in techno and house. The album is  including “Breath” , Basic Soul Unit’s first track with a vocalist along with a remix from label owner Jerome Derradji (with Gerald Mitchel – on strings).

Arttu – Set You Free [4LUX1204]

Cover art - Arttu: Set You Free

Arttu returns on 4lux and he returns on form with two new cuts. Summin Bout Drums is a dirty and sleazy house affair. The Finnish producer now residing in Berlin comes with two fat versions of his own while Basic Soul Unit provides for a frantic remix with a crazy acid vibe. Set You Free is a bumping track with hard hitting drums cut up vocals and harsh synth elements.

Basic Soul Unit – Swept Up / Mindstorm [NONPLUS020]

Basic Soul Unit gets rugged and nasty for Boddika’s Nonplus+ stable. The offset and grubby bruk drums of ‘Swept Up’ could easily be mistaken for an A Made Up Sound production, but there’s a warmer Detroit spirit at play which signifies the best of the Basic Soul Unit’s work and marks this up there with his finest. On the other side, ‘Mindstorm’ brews tense strings, escalating chords and roiling acid on a swung 4/4 flex, proper dangerous styles.

Basic Soul Unit – Northern Heights EP [OHWL#Eight]

The exploration of the Northern Heights by Basic Soul Unit and Unbroken Dub brings us to the eighth release on Other Heights. A raw, edgy, yet still very soulful EP by two northern musical explorers.

Basic Soul Unit – Deep Diving EP [NK029]

BASIC SOUL UNIT - Deep Diving (Front Cover)

Stuart Li aka Basic Soul Unit with 4 new cuts of submerged bass excursions for Nouveau Kanada. All tracks sound distinctly raw and heavy, but with modern nods to UK bass and spatial elektro. Stuart’s deep appreciation of dusty house grooves shines through on all tracks – but his treatment of the lead cut Deep Diving pays homage to those dope Dance Mania B-sides of yore.

BASIC SOUL UNIT - Soulspeak (Front Cover)

Basic Soul Unit, with his personal blend from Chicago house, Detroit Techno, UK post Detroit techno, delivers three warm techno tracks. Shed is on remix duties and he comes with a rough attitude, raw, deep and challenging.

MOTOR CITY DRUM ENSEMBLE/SEBASTIAN SAN/AARON CARL/BASIC SOUL UNIT/CHRISTO - Midnight Creepers EP (Front Cover)

Dairmount curates the third episode of Room With A View’s Midnight Circles vinyl-only series and there’s plenty of reason to indulge. Firstly Motor City Drum Ensemble’ delicious Mr Fingers inspired jam “Moving Through Clouds”. Alongside this is the last ever musical contribution from the dearly departed Aaron Carl, whose distinct tones ride the hypnotic, ever so spectral, Detroit back of Sebastien San with real aplomb. On the flip Basic Soul Unit is in crescendo building mood with the deep, emotive bump of his classic “Bedroom Blues” which is a perfect bedfellow for the one real unfamiliar name here in the shape of Christo. In such exalted company the rising Derby based producer excels with the reverberant skittering brilliance of “New Jazzno” based around the most joyous of jettisoning piano leads.

Herman – Rock Your Body [FA025]

https://imagescdn.juno.co.uk/300/CS425889-01B-MED.jpg

Basic Soul Unit returns to his Herman project with an excellent early chicago influenced house track. Seriously good track that is weird and wonky with much quality in the drum programming. Very spacious without being cheeky. It comes comes with an utterly irresistible rework from Vakula reminiscent of the halcyon days of chi house.
