E.R.P. – Evoked Potentials 1/3 [SEM014]

Any new project from Convextion man Gerard Hanson’s ERP project is worth celebrating, particularly when it is stretched over three 10-inch singles. Part one of the Evoked Potentials series offers two typically on-point chunks of intergalactic electro. He begins with “Sensory Progress”, where vintage computer bleeps, throbbing electrofunk bass, spacey chords and yearning melodies wrap themselves around a snappy TR-808 groove. Flipside “Lodestone” is a slightly more atmospheric affair, where cascading synthesizer melodies and grandiose, deep space chords cluster around a shuffling rhythm track. It sounds a little like Drexciya jamming with Brown Album-era Orbital, which is no bad thing in our book.

DJ Stingray – Kern Vol.4 [KERN004]

DJ STINGRAY/VARIOUS - Kern Vol 4

For the latest volume in Tresor’s occasional Kern compilation series, the long standing German imprint has turned to balaclava-sporting Detroit legend DJ Stingray. The Drexciya associate has gathered together a typically forthright selection of techno and electro jams, presented here in unmixed form for pure DJ pleasure. Given that all the material is high quality, picking highlights is tough. Our favourites include the deep space electro brilliance of “Musik Politik” by Syncom Data, the trippy, acid-fired madness of vintage Aphex Twin wriggler “Serge Fenix Rendered 2”, the throbbing sub-bass and crusty drum machine hits of Herva’s “Slam The Laptop” and the bustling techno madness of Dynarec’s intergalactic workout “Moving Corridors”.

Alek Stark – Blueshifted People [CPU00101100]

STARK, Alek - Blueshifted People (In A Redshifted Neighbourhood)

Alek Stark’s attention to detail in everything he does is particularly apparent in his music – his tracks are all first class analogue electro. He pulls no punches on this E.P. with heavy 808 percussion alongside a myriad of modular noise and synth workouts. Cold, robotic and reminiscent of early Psyche / BFC with deep chorused pads creating an off-world dystopian theme that runs throughout this release.

Anthiliawaters – The Miles Without You [KONDI018]

Anthiliawaters has set out to explore the cold and almost isolated unknown with their stunningly lush Detroit-influenced album. Warm, jazzy synth pads supplying a melodic counterpart to the softly crunching, electro-tinged beats. A solid home listening fare for the living room that draws parallels to the beautiful and mysterious world of Drexciya and almost continues the journey of the highly popular The Other People Place – “Lifestyles Of The Laptop Cafe”. Being an almost unseen digital only release since 2008, the time couldn’t be more perfect for a reissue for the vinyl lovers. Anthiliawaters will take you with them on their soundtrack to life. Making moments, not music for moments. Anthiliawaters is Gosub.

The Other People Place Ft. Mystic Tribe A.i. – Sunday Night Live At The Laptop Cafe [CAL010/C#27]

One of the two The Other People Place releases (the Warp full length and this 12). Drexciyan involvement in this classic release is obvious. One of the deepest and intense tracks with such a warm positive vibe. Flipside contains a track by Mystic Tribe. (not very mystical of course for those who know the history of Detroit techno. Unique track from a unique project… and there are not many projects with Tribe in its name. Their release on Retroactive is one Detroit techno collector items). One of those records that get you through the day. Re-issue on the Clone Aqualung Series with new artwork.

Jeff Mills – Planets [AXCD051]

The history of Planets … It has been 100 years since the British composer Gustav Holst introduced his most famous score «The Planets». An elegant musical tour to each one of our Planets in the Solar System, Holst brought forth imaginary visions of space that would survive many generations and decades after. As an important piece to the classical universe, ‘The Planets’ is regularly played throughout the World every year as it had been the most vivid translation of our cosmic neighborhood until now. The Electronic Music artist and producer Jeff Mills, pays tribute to this century of incredible musical production. He embarks to compose a sonic journey to re-discover our neighboring planets in a 18 piece suite that explores the nine planets, including the portions of space in between the Planets, the nine regions Mills calls Loop Transits.

Dopplereffekt – Cellular Automata [LSR020]

“Cellular Automata” is the new album from Dopplereffekt (Gerald Donald and Michaela To-Nhan Bertel), their first in ten years since 2007. Cellular Automata approaches mathematical growth and decay as an iterative process, with each data input considered individually relative to the overall model. The result represents one of the group’s boldest creative endeavors, defying expectations while remaining unmistakably Dopplereffekt. Cellular Automata is the third Dopplereffekt release to come via Berlin’s Leisure System label, following 2013’s “Tetrahymena” and 2014’s “Hypnagogia”.

VA – Datafunk V2.0 Sampler 1 [AFS-DJS1]

One of two very limited samplers of the Datafunk 2.0 project. Due to the project being considerably delayed a couple of artists pulled their tracks so Abstract Forms has decided to split the remainder of the project into two 12″ samplers instead.

ITPDWIP – Eye Can See The Darkness (In The End Of The Tunnel) [LTWHT010]

Eye Can See The Darkness (In The End Of The Tunnel) is a shot of light in the dark cavern of a broken heart. Blinded By The Lights rips apart the heart-string orchestra rather than just pulling on the strings. A love ballad lost in the haze of the mid-summer, faded to blue and repackaged as a gentle and tender winter anthem. Sharing the A-side with the lucid dreaming of Jeremiah R on the drum-heavy remix. On the flip, I Am Not Him is a filter-squelching, bass-slapping meander into green haze territory, that finally erupts into a swagger of familiar Detroit-channeled drums and steady faded pads. Outernet grumbles up the black-hole cosmic radiation with an industrial-tinged number that plunges the depths of deep-space. Proper growling and clanging synths to add the right amount of raw, just at the end.

The Valley And The Mountain – Gentle Waters Keep Moving [PF013CD]

Only a few nuggets of information exist on The Valley and The Mountain. ‘Gentle Waters Keep Moving’ is the first full length outing from TVTM and their/his/her most absorbing work to date. Sharpened edges are rounded, 303 squawk softened and rhythms mellowed as ten tracks of melting music is served. The Detroit denizen calls on the sounds of the hometown. Techno is at the album’s heart but frosted touches of electro are present, warming acid twangs, house grooves with all being dipped in a refreshing undercurrent of electronica.
