Bumblebee Unlimited – Lady Bug (Remixes) [GLR120003]

Groove Line Records continue with another Patrick Adams & Greg Carmichael produced classic, Lady Bug, by Bumblebee Unlimited, the second in our series of 12 audiophile reissues from the Disco underground. Side A is the Disco Mix by John Morales and Frank Trimarco. A solid kick opens the track before Morales’s trademark percussion is introduced. Then the slick bass, guitar and piano groove play alongside the innovative synth lines and drive the rhythm forward, before the addition of that simple but engaging single note piano groove… the core element of the track, and the synthesized vocal between the Lady Bug in question and the bee who’s chasing her. Side B features the Disco Remix by the legendary Larry Levan. Starting with the full drums and percussion Levan adds each element at an earlier stage than the Disco Mix, so the full track, including the vocal, hits you at just over a minute and doesn’t let go until the fade, giving a more intense dance floor experience.

Albion – Disco Mambo [MME1001]

3 stunning edits made by the master of European Disco: Albion Venables from Sweden. Just a quick description of the tracks, Disco Mambo is as you can imagine, a Disco Mambo track clearly dedicated to the label. Hear The Night comes from an obscure Italian record with some French Vocals in it. And The Mirror Forrest is a beautiful electronic tune coming from an Italian Library record.

VA – Crumbs 002 [CRUMBS002]

Tee Mango rides some seriously wig flipping synth lines over an irresistible tropical groove that just builds beautifully into a bona fide ‘moment’ on the floor. Treating us with two solid gold Soulful extensions: Allenby Chilton takes on a little known Etta jam, amplifies the Funk elements and transforms the song into an altogether more heavyweight workout. Finally Fence take on a rare late 70’s psychedelic Soul tune, again adding some 21st century wide-screen sonics and dancefloor dynamic.

Brian Ellis enlisted two seasoned underground guests to usher in his brand of boogie-funk. ‘Love Is’ features the legendary Egyptian Lover, a master of the 808 and veteran party-rocker on vocoder detail, while on the flip-side, K-Maxx commands the microphone with his signature style on ‘Electric Body’.

Ma Spaventi – Cinema [SLOMO014]

SPAVENTI, Ma - Cinema

Hot on the heels of the last release from Francisco in Slow Motions’s new soundtrack series comes this stunning four track release from Marco Antonio Spaventi. While recalling influences as diverse as Jan Hammer, John Carpenter, Goblin, Giorgio Moroder, Daniele Patucchi, the De Angelis brothers and many other legendary (mainly Italian) composers from the soundtrack side, these tracks are just as comfortable on the electronic dancefloor and provide a dancing experience every bit as engaging as a listening one. Synth-heads, soundtrack afficonados, space-freaks and dance fiends are all set to enjoy this one in equal measure.

House Of Spirits – Holding On [BIS013]

House of Spirits is the church of sound over which Tom Noble presides, raising the congregation to ecstatic heights from his pulpit of passion. Noble invited musicians to transform his sketches into a dynamic live performance. The resulting studio celebration led to the euphoric “Holding On” for Beats In Space Records. “Holding On” glides on such a joyous, eventful groove that it’s impossible to confine the track to a specific time or place. Strings, seemingly lifted from a 70s Salsoul twelve, soar alongside a gospel choir preaching positivity for souls both lost and found. “Holding On” embraces disco house authentically and timelessly. On the flip, Peaking Lights tucks the heavenly wonder of the original under a dub-worn blanket for an out-of-body dream beam.

Shangri & La – Plitz Klub Kids EP [TAIN015]

Neo Romantico dance music by Shangri & La. Inspired by a club and a scene that never was, we hear rroto acid, bongo boogie, future reggae and candid club cuts that equals the Fantastic Four. Great sounding music for good looking people.

Sir Leon Greg – Warehouse Classics #3 [WAR003]

Sir Leon Greg (another incarnation of Perseus Traxx) jams out then reinforces some edits of forgotten classics with a raw & personal analogue treatment for a devastating full effect on the dance floor, that is a far cry from the proliferation of over-produced squeaky-clean software edits. These are basic, raw ideas thrown down quickly and capturing the energy on 1/4” tape.

Turquoise Summers – Shades [BT1011]

Turquoise Summers returns with a new slab of So Cal Fonk for the Omega Supreme label. A Touch Of Turquoise , last year’s debut LP from Summers, was a superb induction into the world of twilight funk the musician inhabits and there’s plenty more speakerboxx vibes on display with this six track Shades EP. From the very moment the stripped back snap and heavy synth funk of opening cut “The Way You Make Me Feel” veers into focus, the man like Turquoise is on top form, sailing through tempos and moods – think introspective and party starting with “Divinity(Crystalized)” a true highlight. A must for those that live for the funk.

Soulphiction – Glitz [CCS085]

Michel Baumann has long been a steadfast measure of everything 4/4 electronic music should be, both as SoulPhiction and Jackmate and as a curator of Philpot Records. Coming up from the same hip hop roots that inspired Circus Company in the beginning, he channels a sample-fuelled, jazz-inflected sound that would buckle under the weight of the soul contained within were it not for the strength and presence of his rhythm section. Strong Patrice Scott remix.
