Breaker 1 2 – Breakin [FP002]

https://imagescdn.juno.co.uk/300/CS498380-01A-MED.jpg

Forbidden Planet launched in fine fashion last month, securing some original material from Nation and Creme artist D’Marc Cantu that was complemented well by an accompanying remix from DVS-1. The Montreal label demonstrate they are equally capable of uncovering unheralded talent with this second release from the rather search engine unfriendly Breaker 1 2. Allegedly hailing from Florida, Breaker 1 2 seems inspired to use the same lo fi house template of his fellow North American contemporaries but take it to a much weirder place. Lead track “2” is the straightest production here, despite the unpredictable hi hats that skitter throughout and it doesn’t quite prepare for where Breaker 1 2 goes on the flip. The synth tone that roars into action on “DMT” is an unexpected delight whilst “Estonia” mutates swiftly from hazy insouciance into full on dark room techno.

Polysick – Under Construction [SILK049]

Polysick with some US-inspired classic house on 100% Silk. “Whatever” kicks things off with a cool, optimistic chord sequence. The jacking, varied percussion provides perfect balance to the dreamy synth work. “Shattered” begins with a riff channeling the unstudied soulfulness, eventually introducing a wobbly lead reminiscent of Lone. “3 Cents” combines the producer’s obvious melodic chops with a loose, boogie-inspired bassline.

The second comp on Holland’s 030303 shows the beauty, depth and variety of the Roland TB-303 more than ever in the history of the label. Moving away from IDM and braindance this time, all that’s presented to you is gorgeous dancefloor mayhem with great personality. Contributions by Elec Pt.1, Jonny 3 Snares, Automatic Tasty, Cosmic Force and Dexter all have a classic yet leftfield feel to it. About half of the 10 tracks diverge a little from this excellent recipe. Roy of the Ravers’ track ‘Acid Hors d’Oevre’ stands out for it melodic raving ecstacy; the track may well be the main hit of the Bangface-style rave community this year. Further down the line, Kid Machine’s ‘Mirage’ brings impressive synth-wave-disco madness on a distinctive 80s tip – this one is for fans of Legowelt. Then Jared Wilson’s cut – amazingly – brings us back to the time we first heard Choice’s ‘Acid Eiffel’: classic stuff that will never bore the ones who feel it. Another BIG one is for Drvg Cvltvre who delivers some down-to-midtempo sickness, distantly reminiscing of 33 1/3’s ‘Searchin”, but then on acid.

Generation Next is back with his second single release. The Medication EP features 3 tracks that are inspired by the streets of Detroit City. “Sum Light’ starts us off with an exuberant acid bass line followed by a truly original 808 drum pattern. ‘Generic Current’ is a smooth flowing, simple house track: the bass plays, the drums knock, and the claps excite. The last track, ‘Acid Alcohol’, will soon become known as a classic acid track – just listen to it and you’ll see why. As a bonus, there is a surprise gift inside each copy!

Casey Tucker – Knoe 2/1 [KNOE2/1]

For Those That Knoe has dug a little deeper into the history books to unearth a somewhat understated gem in the form of Casey Tucker for the second chapter of For Those that Knoe. The mid nineties was a time when the sounds of Techno and House were being combined, new sub genres were emerging into clubs and DJs were forging their own unique take on dance floor electronic music. Some of the finest melodic Techno piece with glorious strings, sun drenched pads, liquid acid funk and sizzling hi hats, Some early acid rave sound and the purity of the early tech house sounds before digital audio workstations became favoured over their analogue counterparts.

LHAS – Knoe 1/1 [KNOE1/1]

For Those That Knoe: A new label from the UK focusing on under the radar tracks recorded by unsung heroes, ripped from dusty DATs and lovingly re-mastered and pressed onto vinyl for likeminded people and music collectors alike. Jaime Read as LHAS is one of the unsung heroes on the UK house scene, initially making house music brimming with Chicago jazz flavours and disco tendencies in the mid-90s. Deep from Jaime’s archives come three funk-filled melodic analogue jams, all with their own unique character yet still encapsulating Jaime’s individual take on Chicago jack.

Hieroglyphic Being – The Electronic Belt [ALT009]

https://clone.nl/platen/artwork/large/plaatimage27844.jpg

Hieroglyphic Being with The Electronic Belt, his second release for Alter, and perhaps his most dancefloor orientated release for a good while. The EP is made up of three choice cuts from last years Man With The Red Drum transmission with each track bearing the signifiers of Jamals rough and distinctive production; melodies twisting themselves into psychedelic wormholes, raw kicks and toms that hit as hard and tight as walnuts. Yellow vinyl edition in 5 different coloured disco bags, mastered for vinyl by Stephen Bishop

Interstellar Funk – House Train [RHVD010]

https://imagescdn.juno.co.uk/300/CS493706-01B-MED.jpg

Tom Trago’s Voyage Direct series brings us another Amsterdam based talent. This time its the debut release of Interstellar Funk, who delivers the haunting and sleazy “House Train” which is backed up with a Makam remix. With its raw drums and deep bassline “House Train” sounds like an 80’s Chicago production, however the vocals give the track an unique timeless character and make you want to listen to the track over and over again. Oddly addictive. On the flip, Makam adds an extra drive to the track with its forward drums and synth lines.
