Jyl – Jyl [MW075]

Minimal Wave presents a reissue of Jyl‘s self-titled full-length album from 1984, originally released on Klaus Schulze’s Inteam label. Born and raised in California, Jyl travelled to Europe in her twenties to dance and met several talented and like-minded collaborators along the way. She ended up in Germany, and worked with Ingo Werner, Angela Werner, and Klaus Schulze, on what would become one of the most important and forward thinking electronic albums of the time. Shortly after its release, the song “Computer Love” became a mini-hit along with the album’s opening track “Mechanic Ballerina”. The lyrics of “Silicon Valley” and “Computer Generation” are reflective of the times and have become even more relevant now, 36 years later. The production and song arrangement on the album is immaculate. The synthesizers, drum programming and vocal contributions complement Jyl’s voice perfectly. The album contains an incredible depth beyond a regular dance album likely due to the spirit of the people behind it – the list of contributors add to its significance and near-mythological mystery.

Phuture – Rise From Your Grave [SR1273WHITE]

PHUTURE - Rise From Your Grave

Another classic jammer from 1992 lifted straight from the Strictly Rhythm vaults. Phuture aka acid House pioneers Spanky and DJ Pierre (with a little help from Roy Davis JR) turn in a driving, acidic monster in true Wild Pitch style. Probably the only record that begins with a sinister voice saying ‘This is cocaine speaking’ before diving head-long into one of the best anti-drug House records ever. Bubbling 303 basslines and cavernous handclaps combine with a funked out, dubbed out synth line that just doesn’t stop.

Galaxy II Orchestra – Acid Rain [THANKYOU006]

GALAXY II ORCHESTRA - Acid Rain (reissue)

Forgotten side project production from 1986, by Grammy award winning sound engineer Chris Lord Alge. Two versions of an oddball leftfield electro downtempo chugger and one previously unreleased patriotic monologue acompanied by heroic emotional piano – to be served with a sense of sarcasm.

Massimo Guanti – Diapositive [LON002LP]

Beside the telluric year in pop music and culture, 1977 was still ranked as the future for Italian leftfield composers. Published by Roman imprint Gemelli and credited to the elusive Massimo Guantini (none else than influential jazz player and composer Sandro Brugnolini), Diapositive is a fully cinematic journey in the realm of sci-fi and cool jazz. Fully produced at famous roman Emmequattro Studios (home of many fascinating recordings by piano player Enrico Pieranunzi) the album is deeply rooted in the coolness of italian libraries, showing up such an incredible music craftsmanship. Fully adorned by a vibrant rhythm section, an acoustic piano, a clavinet, a Fender Rhodes and a proper ‘acid jazz’ guitar-playing, this album will lift your mind and soul for good.

Hiroshi Yoshimura – Green [LITA192]

Barely known outside of his home country during his lifetime, the late Japanese ambient music pioneer Hiroshi Yoshimura has seen his global stature rise steadily in the past few years. Originally released in 1986, Green is one of Hiroshi Yoshimura’s most well-loved recordings and a favorite of the artist himself. Recorded over the winter of 1985-86 at Yoshimura’s home studio, the compositions unfold at an unhurried pace, a stark contrast to the busy city life of Tokyo. As Yoshimura explained in the original liner notes, the album title in the context of this body of work is not meant to be seen as a color, but is rather used to convey “the comfortable scenery of the natural cycle known as Green”—which perfectly encapsulates the soothing and warm sounds contained on the album, although it was created utilizing Yamaha FM synthesizers, known for their crisp digital tones. This edition marks the first reissue of the highly sought-after and impossible to find album.

Virgo Four – Do You Know Who You Are? [TX175RED]

Every home should have this record from the 2 of the originators of deep House.  “Do You Know Who You Are?” EP from 1989 is as flawless as it gets, often imitated over the years but never, ever bettered. Every single track on this slab of wax is a classic. Virgo manage to reach right inside & take us somewhere on every cut while maintaining an otherworldly sense of melody & rhythm, some of the playing on this record is incredible & so accomplished, “In A Vision” for example still sounds like it’s beaming right at us from the future while “Take Me Higher” carries it’s stately, Reggae-like vibe along smoothly while retaining enough bounce to keep the floor locked in.

Pilgrims Of The Mind – Elsewhere: Further Excursions (1994-1995) [EVRE009]

Further excursions of one of the most dedicated producers of Vancouver in the early 90s: Pilgrims Of The Mind. Three tracks coming out of the sweet sonic brew that was cooking on the West Coast at the time: elements of techno, ethno, downtempo and general smoked-out trippyness abound.

VA – L’Embrasse: Amsterdam Arcane Tape Recordings 1987 [E-M03]

L’Embrasse is a compilation originally released in 1987, less than 50 copies were distributed at the time through local shops and it is a portrayal of a unique and very little known scene, generated in the deep underground milieu of Amsterdam. At the time, a dozen different acts were featured: Menko (S.M. Nurse founder), Robbie Horsfall, Peter Van Garderen (Nine Circles founder), Der Rudi, Antonia (Tonny Timmermans), No Honey From These, Incredible Coöp (S.M. Candido – Jingo / Thousand Finger Man [SG219YELLOW]

Candido Cameron was a Cuban percussion maestro who had played with luminaries such as Dizzy Gillespie, Buddy Rich and Count Basie throughout his illustrious musical career which started in 1952. Fast forward to 1979 and Candido finds himself caught up in the Disco boom that had engulfed his adopted New York City. Feeling he could add his trademark quick-fire Conga and Bongo playing to Disco’s straight 4 x 4 syncopated rhythm he cut some records with legendary NYC label Salsoul.”Jingo” is an all-time classic dance record, sampled, edited, re-configured and coveted by too many names to mention! It’s a killer funky Disco version of master Nigerian drummer Olatunji’s 1969 percussion suite of the same name, Salsoul style, while over on the flip we have one of the deepest Disco records of all time; “Thousand Finger Man” a testament to Candido’s percussion prowess and a spacey, beautiful voyage that has left more than an indelible mark on modern House music, often being cited as a huge influence by artists such as Masters At Work and more.

The Housefactors – Big Bang Theory [ML2307]

Alleviated Records presents the first-time official reissue of one of Larry Heard’s (Mr. Fingers) most coveted aliases: The Housefactors. Big Bang Theory, originally released on Black Market in 1990, sounds like nothing else that we have heard from the man. It sees the Chicago native branch out into the bleepy sounds that were starting to arise across the Atlantic, yet still manages to keep that distinct Fingers soul. A dancefloor sure shot to this day.

Frankie Knuckles – It’s A Cold World / Bad Boy [TX151RED]

Another slice of essential Knuckles / Principle magic, here the duo’s love of Italo and Euro pop records seems to collide with Chicago’s darkened dance-floors and raw drum machines. Perfectly sleazy and insanely danceable, Jamie Principles voice was made for Frankie Knuckles pristine productions and their unique styles compliment each other endlessly. Both tracks featured on this 12″ take us into the subterranean night life of Frankie and Jamie’s world, a world of yearning, heart-break, love and acceptance. A huge pairing of tracks on their initial release and still to this day some 25+ years later, “It’s A Cold World / Bad Boy” was a total game changer, almost verging on pop but too “outsider” to gain the mainstream attention it so deserved, the record stands today as a true classic.
