214 – Exposure to Winds [VIS322]

214 - Exposure to Winds

214 aka Chris Roman is highly regarded as one the most innovative electro producers on the planet following releases on esteemed labels including; Cultivated Electronics, Frustrated Funk, CPU, Klakson and Lunar Disko. ‘Exposure to Winds’ sees 214 return to the 20/20 Vision fold with his first full length album release in 5 years. ‘Exposure to Winds’ was inspired by Roman’s love of the mountains that surround his native Washington State, living in North Bend where David Lynch’s masterpiece ‘Twin peaks’ was filmed. It could be no co-incidence that 214 produces other worldly electronic music that always sounds out of the ordinary. This expertly balanced eight track vinyl release features a selection of styles and tempos from the laid back electro funk grooves ‘Tongue Twister’ and ‘Ball of Straw’ to dark room wobblers like ‘Quick Start’ and ‘The Night’s Shift’. AIt’s a record that will live long in the boxes and crates of discerning DJ’s but also provides an auditory adventure for the listener.

214 – Everything Changed [FR047]

More majestic electro workouts from Chris “214” Roman, a producer who has been serving up slabs of tightly wound machine funk since the dawn of the decade. He opens his first Frustrated Funk outing for three years with the bittersweet deep electro shuffle of “Growing Old Together” before breaking up the beats, ratcheting up the bleeps and cranking out the crackles on alien funk throb-job “Last Dance”. Over on the flip, “Dislocated” is a high-tempo slab of end of days electro full of growling noises and creepy chords, while “Voice Check” is picturesque, dreamy and life affirming: a triumphantly positive and melodious conclusion to another stunning collection of cuts.

214 – Ingalls Way EP [VIS303]

After previous outings on electro institutions Frustrated Funk and Central Processing Unit, Chris Roman aka 214 now appears for the first time on 20/20 Vision. From the atmospheric tones of ‘Potential Events’, the manic energy of ‘Windeye’ and the deeper grooves of ‘Back To Sine’, it’s an EP that leaves no stone unturned in the intergalactic sonic quest. On remix duties we have none other than Keith Tenniswood aka Radioactive Man, who also makes his first appearance on the label.

…and then the Log Lady said: “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Yet there are those who open many eyes. Eyes are the mirror of the soul, someone has said. So we look closely at the eyes to see the nature of the soul. Sometimes when we see the eyes — those horrible times when we see the eyes, eyes that … that have no soul — then we know a darkness, then we wonder: where is the beauty? There is none if the eyes are soulless.”

214 – Fuel Cells [CPU00100000]

Seattle-based electro artist 214 (Two Fourteen) aka Chris Roman has made a welcome, if not inevitable debut on CPU, with 4 tracks of icy beats, bass and bleeps. He begins with the panicked electronics, bubbling synths and snappy rhythms of “Overbridge”, before diving deep into purist electro pastures on the funk-laden brilliance of “Fuel Cells”. Flip for the similarly funky 303 lines, intergalactic melodies and hissing electro beats of “Keep Right”, and the darker, spacier and punchier “Greenbelt”. If you’re on the hunt for some “proper electro”, look no further.

214 – I See What You Did There [SSPS003]

Following his acclaimed North Bend album of 2015, Chris Roman, known as 214, is back on Shipwrec with the third in their series of single sided odysseys. A haze of bass descends for “I See What You Did There”, a clipped drizzle of percussion falls before thick acid bars tremble into position. Echoes, reverb and decay merge, groan and bend as the preconceptions of ambient, electro and techno are pulled apart. In one breath dense and complex, the next grooving and future funk dipped. An epic example of 214’s talent. Single sided 12″ with a silkscreen printed B side.

214 – North Bend [SHIPLP003]

Cultured Dutch label Shipwrec is to team up with Frustrated Funk to release ”North Bend”, a new album by 214 aka Chris Roman. The album features atmospheric techno ambient with scattered beats, lush electro that is filled with true electronic soul and cosmic soundscapes that come from another world. This album is furthering Roman’s own signature sound as well as a new and subtly evolved brand of electro that builds on a rich history of electronica. It’s another fine statement that reminds us just why Roman, the Frustrated Funk and Shipwrec families, are such puristic minds that push music from the heart.

214 – Lyle At Dawn [FR031]

While the drama continues and we keep fighting the demons of our daily struggle,.. a man from another place locked himself down in a black lodge, conceiving new material to share with the world. 214 isn’t just a number, it’s music from an extradimensional place, high up the North Bend mountains. Frequencies coming from a red room, filled with electronic circuitry parallel connected to our inner soul. Lyle At Dawn is Chris Roman’s third offering for the Frustrated Funk familia. Setting the pace for more to come, as we connect to the Shipwrec multiverse for a full album release to follow shortly after this mind bending EP. You have been warned..

Seattle’s 214 (TwoFourteen) is next in line for some Harbour City Sorrow ear candy. His Miami roots are clearly present in his strong booming beat programming but Puerto Rico born Chris Roman has more tricks up his sleeve as his style crosses many borders. It’s a solid electro-techno affair on this EP.
