Acronym – Entagled In Vines [SEM077]

Hypnotising drone techno from the other world. Entangled In Vines is an intricate collection of tracks that span across the entire techno realm, from slow-burning hypnotics to high-tech warehouse blasters. “Enter” is the perfect example of this man’s style, a largely beatless tune that still drags plenty of movement across the groove, and “Getting Closer” quickly ups the tempo with a fine layer of bass and kicks. “Escape” transports us across a deep techno wormhole, and “Wrapped” delivers Acronym’s inimitable swarm of hollow tones in the same vein as artists like Donato Dozzy.

Legowelt, as Nacho Patrol, is back on MinimalRome with the single Panter 777, already included in the limited edition tape of his LP The Maze of Violence, produced in 2008. Willis Anne – Mass Confusion [LOD009]

“Today, we have computer software consisting of representations of a three dimensional interface on a two dimensional screen, being controlled by a third party hardware, emulating the sound of machines built twenty years ago, which were themselves built emulating the sound of a machine built thirty years before yet.” – Nate Harrison ‘Mass Confusion’ is about our struggle to understand and survive within this world and its illusions, keeping our own identity, desires and hopes up. Welcome to the mess.

Murray CY – Conformist [LIES081]

Insane hyper hybrid combo of wave/house/techno by Murray CY of Glasgow. The CY stands for Contort Yourself’ the label he runs which bridges the gaps between lost sounds of the past and contemprary noise makers, this ep displaying the producers take on the sound perfectly. All four tracks move in their own way from mid-tempo heaviness to more peak time fare. This is the rough back alley stuff you’ve been warned about! US pressing, import price.

Deniro – Kairuku EP [OBQ003]

The Hague based producer ”Deniro” is responsible for the 3rd installment in the ”Oblique Music” series. This time around the 12” consists of 4 club cuts that all showcase a different ambiance throughout. Label owner Ben Buitendijk is carefully curating the sound for his recently established imprint and Deniro’s (extinct) Penguin inspired package definitely matches with the label’s previous escapades.

Ital & Halal – Tower B [LR011]

Ital & Aurora Halal return to Lovers Rock with ‘Tower B,’ an EP of enigmatic techno explorations. ‘Shenzhen River’ opens: an ominous, questing acid line stretches its tendrils around nocturnal atmospheres. ‘From the Brink’ counters with glints of warm melody. On side B, the title track unfurls with slithering percussion and a menacing drone. Ambient closer ‘Where Exactly I Am’ picks up the pieces, lost voices traveling across the stereo field, searching for answers through an endless pale haze.

Oscar Mulero – Hyperbolic Paths [TOKEN064]

Hyperbolic Paths is simultaneously deep and bleepy, accented by hi-hats in syncopation. The tom-heavy Suborbital Trajectories carries a serious groove, layered with lively melodic elements and an occasional unexpected statement cymbal crash. A haunting and hypnotic number, Inclination swells and increases in intensity, rolling on after its breakdown with a playful kick-clap interaction. Eccentricity is a spacious, dubby closing track with reverb-soaked ornamental splashes.

Population One – Temporary Insanity + Remixes [OUT018/OUT022]

‘Temporary Insanity Remixes’ is a 12” featuring the redefinitions of the two original productions of Detroit veteran Terrence Dixon, turned upside down by three of the most groundbreaking electronic music artists as Voiski, Pangaea and Cosmin TRG, appearing alongside label head Simone Gatto. OUT022 operates as a modern take of old school sounds, an hybrid union of all melodic techno sub forms – these remixes keep the mental locked groove material of Dixon’s tracks, adding emotionally irradiating patterns and each producer’s typical paths.

Lapien – A Change Is Gonna Come EP [REKIDS093]

LAPIEN - A Change Is Gonna Come EP

Berlin-based producer Lapien serves up an atmospheric three tracker on Rekids. Also known as Metropolis or one half of Artefakt, Nick Lapien’s last three releases have landed on Finale Sessions, Fred P’s Soul People Music and DVS1’s Mistress Recordings. Releasing on Rekids, the multifaceted Dutch artist’s next outing features three mesmerising cuts with the dusky ‘A Change Is Gonna Come’ initiating the package using infectious hats, subtle sub-bass and an indistinguishable vocal that ebbs subtly in and out of the mix. ‘As It Is’ is the most robust number on the package with its undulating percussion and moody chords taking centre stage, until ‘Vexed’ concludes everything with gloomy pads, shuffling hats and echoing effects.

214 – North Cascades [FR035]

…and then the Log Lady said: “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Yet there are those who open many eyes. Eyes are the mirror of the soul, someone has said. So we look closely at the eyes to see the nature of the soul. Sometimes when we see the eyes — those horrible times when we see the eyes, eyes that … that have no soul — then we know a darkness, then we wonder: where is the beauty? There is none if the eyes are soulless.”
