Ike Release – Dream Sequencer EP [MOSDEEP015]

IKE RELEASE - Dream Sequencer EP

Following on from his increasingly essential work as Innerspace Halflife, Ike Release steps out on his own for a new three tracker on MOS Deep that finds the Chicago producer in a bullish mood. Opener ‘Cosmic Supreme’ is a moody march across the surface of a planet far from here – typically raw, bobbling drums set the tone as a frazzled and drawn out synth line winds right through its core from start to finish. ‘Spells’ is backlit with an ethereal synthy glow as another thick analogue line takes the main focus of the track, all the while as nebulous percussion floats about like a cloud of dust in the background. Finally, ‘Westview’ is a little more propulsive, driven as it is by a lashing, rubberised bassline that sprays about freely, contained only by the itchy and more regimented hi-hats that slice up and down around it. Despite there being a sonic denseness to all three tracks here, a certain emotional gravitas always lurks with in: be it one of introspection or reflection, they are difficult to ignore.

Contakt – Nobody Else [IH004]

The latest offering from San Francisco’s Icee Hot label finds the young imprint officially welcoming another artist to its gradually expanding roster, the Michigan-reared, New York-based producerContakt. Particularly on “Nobody Else,” Contakt’s flair for big-room melody remains intact, but he takes notes from classic KMS, filling out the song’s cresting synths with a full-bodied bassline, a hooky vocal sample and a sturdy rhythmic underpinning. “Tessera 04” goes deeper, channeling Maurizio while delving headlong into a dense cloud of synths and maintaining a steady sense of forward momentum. Remixes by Ghosts on Tape and Robert Hood.

Sandrow M – Prayervan EP [UV014]

Sandrow M with his solo debut for the Dresden based label Uncanny Valley and it ended up being a hell of a record full of diversity. Everything starts with the edgy beats of ”Prayervan” that are quickly flattered by one of those catchy melodies typical for Sandrow’s synths play. This is great Pop music, even more when Sandrow M starts to sing. ”Facerunner” however, is a club tune with its ever rising beats that are accompanied by a superb synth pad. The flipside starts with the catchy anthem ”Gonna Make”. You cannot defend yourself against this sample that will stick in your head for a long time. And once again it’s his synth work that makes the difference. Not to mention the funky solo. ”Schnaubi” rounds things up in a more unpolished way with its stuttering drum work. But here again this is refined by those irresistible harmonies out of Sandrow M’s keys.

Mental Model – Rational Emotive Machine EP [MNTLTRX102]

The Emotiv Rational Machine is in full effect and gives the unnecessary things no attention and focusing only on its own distinct goal, which is to make you dance. No fancy melody, which are distracting you from being one with the bass and the 4 to the floor. No distraction from overloaded ego spilled arrangements. Ganser Syndrom; A 808 and a handfull fx with a growling synth that sees no high frequencies, maybe a little bit here and there. Vitamin B12; We give you a boost! Your brain won’t be disappointed with fantasizing on what to do next on the floor. Prodromal; It’s a 909 groove and that’s it! It’s a conclusion of many circumstances that many love that sound of this machine. Obession; It’s an obession to go out at the weekend and move like freak on the floor in your favorite club

Legowelt & Xosar team up to deliver 3 tracks of deep aquatic techno and freaked out house jams for M Division Recordings. This 3 track super limited edition 10″ on blue vinyl starts with the title track “Oceania”. Breakbeats meets ethereal chants and hazy aquatic synths, like a lost AFX record from the early 90s. Next up, “Atlantis Force Code” – euphoric house chords submerged by a wet blanket of swirling pads. Lastly, one strictly for freaked-out late night dancefloors – “Xosheeba” – jacking beats, a tough bassline and a gnarled phantom vocal stabs.

Neville Watson – One Four Green [TNG004]

Neville Watson’s original ‘One Four Green’ is the obvious highlight, a wiggly bottomed but robust jacker with hands-on drum machine tweaks and lovely melodic developments working just the right side of proggy. Remixing, Deep Space Orchestra beam it into more ecstatic cosmic house zones and Perseus Traxx has his tracky way.

Vatican Shadow – It Stands To Conceal [HOS369LP]

In it’s third year of operations Vatican Shadow became an unavoidable issue on the international noise and techno agenda. Following Type, Blackest Ever Black and Modern Love editions, Dominick Fernow aka Prurient aka Vatican Shadow ploughed forth with his project, resulting in three tapes ‘Jordanian Descent’, ‘Ghosts Of Chechnya’ and ‘Atta’s Apartment Slated For Destruction’, collected here on vinyl for the first time. Disc one features both sides of his extended ‘Jordanian Descent’ meditations, some of his longest in this guise and given to incredible, unfurling loop repetitions; Disc two holds ‘Ghosts Of Chechnya’, one of his most concise and varied issues, eight tracks wide and tending towards gloomy, urgent, cinematic arabesques including the outstanding ‘Voices Came Crackling Across A Motorola Hand-Held Radio’; Disc three comprises the four parts of his amazing ‘Atta’s Apartment Slated For Destruction’ including the impeccable darkness of ‘Once This Fire Gathers Strength’.

Covered In Sand – Heaven’s Gate Suicides [MIRA003]

Shifted unveils yet another cloaked figure with his Covered in Sand project, the first release on the Avian sub-label Mira following two impressive turns from the mysterious Bleaching Agent. The title track to Heavens Gates Suicides is saturated in overdrive with cloudy Regis and BMB influences evident. Vatican Shadow remixes “Heavens Gates Suicides” adding subtle musicality to his version, almost throwing the track out of sync with it’s awkward snare hits – if you can call them that. “Russian Gold & Blood Diamonds” is like a beatless Severed Heads piece pulling desperately at your heartstrings while “Pale Skin” is another electronically shambled scuzz of hollowed hisses and jittery sound design.
