Mgun – The Near Future EP [TTT007]

New release on The Trilogy Tapes label by Mgun aka Manuel Gonzales. Deadly sick, ambient and stepping by turns, it’s an essential offering for anyone interested in the outer reaches of house and bass music. Opener ‘2’ is a stuttering, bleepy techno number, followed by the dense, almost psychedelic layers of guitars and distortion that is ‘Walk With Me’. Sleazoid electro banger ‘The Race’ closes side A. ‘Flutter’s Brother’ is a muffled 3/4 time techno rumbler. ‘Shamen’ goes for a skippy garage feel, albeit one with hobnail boots on. Final track ‘Tiles’ is a combination of computer language and speaker-blowing sub bass.

Second release from Anthony Naples on Mister Saturday Night Records and this one is a beast of a techno track. On his second 12″ he brings two mixes of this tune with the A-side holding down a sweet deep house mix while the flip bangs out a relentless techno mix.

Hinode / Marieu – Punch In the Face [ENW003]

HINODE/MARIEU - Punch In The Face

Enlightened Wax returns with a fistful of kick drums to the face and a whole load of crunchiness to boot. Marieu makes a return to his own label alongside Berlin’s rising analogue fiend, Hinode who makes himself heard right from the start of A1, submerging us into a shuffling, funked-out frenzy of samples and ruthless percussion. The A2 is another brutal monster, where bursting toms, cascading synths and analogue rawness align to form an irresistible peak-time burner; but it’s on the B1 that things turn really nasty – some seriously off-kilter percussion moulds seamlessly with gorgeous strings only to fall back apart into a winding bundle of slicing drums. Not much can be said about the B4, it’s just a classic “MG” (Marieu-Groove) bomb: dusty drums, shredded vocal samples and those jagged piano keys grinding their way into that seductive Enlightened Wax vibe.

In Aeternam Vale – La Piscine [MW041]

Fans of mechanical techno-not-techno sounds will be all over Minimal Wave’s latest transmission from 80s French underground heroes In Aeternam Vale. Having reissued several essential lost works from the outfit last year, most notably the proto-Sandwell sound of “Highway Dark Veins”, Veronica Vasicka delivers another two tracks from the vault on limited fluorescent yellow vinyl. Stylistically mirroring that previous two track release the title track is an equally brilliant synth-techno beast which could easily pass for a Function track today, while B-side “Calling Somewhere” sounds like a cold wave version of proto-halfstep. Needless to say, the fact that these tracks are 22 years old literally left us speechless.

Marcel Dettmann – Linux / Ellipse [50WEAPONS025]

Cover art - Marcel Dettmann: Linux

The idea behind the label name is quite simple. After 50 single releases the label will not be continued and instead look back on a series of unique electronic dance music. With catalog number 25 the first half is now completed. As a very special guest Marcel Dettmann returns to 50 Weapons for a celebration of classic techno. Similar to his sold out “Deluge / Duel” single from December 2011, Marcel Dettmann affirms his love of purified, pumping techno.

John Daly dropping a monster track on his own 1track Records. Moving away from the previous deeper and chicago rooted tracks on the label he drops a massive peak time house track with massive chords and a pulsating sub baseline. Flipside has a more stripped and dubby Pandora Box remix.

VA – Dead Cities Vol.1 [EYED001]

Portuguese duo Photonz curate Dead Cities compilation – whose title is inspired by the Future Sound of London album of the same name – which is the most articulate expression yet of their love of warped electronic music. Limiting the selection to a group of artists who are close, local Portuguese talent is prominent and due to this tightly-knit approach, there is a cohesive sound on the compilation, but it could never be called smooth or polished.
