Baba ZuLa – İstanbul Sokakları [GBLP163]

Baba Zula, the legendary Istanbul band, remains the most experimental exponent of the hotly-tipped contemporary Turkish psych-rock scene. BaBa ZuLa are revered sonic trailblazers who have built a cult following in all corners of the globe and have counted members of Einstürzende Neubauten, Can and Nick Cave the Bad Seeds as their fans. Pulsing, hypnotic tracks powered by Turkish percussion, glitched electronics, deep bass, electric saz and dual male/female vocals. İstanbul Sokakları (Streets of Istanbul) is a vivid sonic and political statement from a band that continues to show us the future.

Unknown To Known – Lightship LP [UTK005]

In the Summer of 2023, Unknown To Known recorded their first studio album onboard a ‘Lightship’ in the docklands of East London. Sculpted through long form improvisations, this music reflects their personal transformations as well as the rapidly evolving world in which we live. With its gradually unveiling intricacies and soundscapes rich in colour and depth, we sincerely hope this album can provide some moments of calm and joy. Moody, gliding, ranging improvisations, fronted by the closely-knit harmonies and melodies of woodwind duo Idris Rahman and Tamar Osbourne, and under-pinned by the propulsive, layered rhythms of Yusuf Ahmed’s drums and Jihad Darwish’s sitar and bass.

John Carpenter – Die Klapperschlange (Escape From New York) [MAXI1144-12]

One of legendary filmmaker John Carpenter’s few forays into electro-disco proper, ‘Die Klapperschlange’ is an instant throwback, the title theme from the 1981 sci-fi film Escape From New York. It’s as if this track was made for the anarcho-discos of the future, its inherent darkness rendering it seemingly unassailable by the crumbling of society or public breakouts of violence depicted in the film.

Taken – Taken 2024 [TAR026]

Taken, is the duo of former Skudge man Elias Landberg and Nihad Tule. This latest slab of techno follows their previous work in that it is functional but stylish. The drums are analogue, muscular, and perfect to hook on to, and the synths and hi-hats that peel off a rusty, glitchy and slight, but make enough of an impact to cut through.

Legowelt – A Field Guide To The Void LP [CJFD43LP]

Legowelt returns to Clone Records with yet another sonic journey that defies conventional electronic music boundaries, offering an album that is as eclectic as it is immersive. Blending different styles and textures seamlessly and proving that electronic music can still be creative and that function doesn’t always prevail style. He delivers a collection that transports listeners through a kaleidoscope of retro-futuristic sounds, deep grooves, and cosmic melodies. Despite being in the music game for more than 25 years the music from Danny Wolfers remains playful and refreshing. Stylistically taking elements from his whole musical career and not commiting to the latest trend or any genre specifically, and low-key taking the piss with everyone who takes themself to seriously. While many electronic music artists are stuck in their own void, busy pleasing the big room, Legowelt meticulously crafts rich textured soundscapes, balancing between cosmic exploration and the dancefoor, that evoke both nostalgia and futuristic visions. His ability to fuse elements of house, techno, disco and electro with cinematic influences results in an album that is not only ready for club use but also gratifying at home. Each track offers something unique–whether it’s the hypnotic rhythms, the lush synth lines, or the subtle, eerie undertones that creep in unexpectedly. Legowelt’s attention to detail and passion for his craft shine through, making this album a worthy follow up to his last album on the Clone Jack For Daze series.

Robert Bergman – 3 AM [B16]

Dutch label Brew returns with more moody techno that is both deep yet impactful. It’s Robert Bergman at the helm and ‘3 AM’ is his opening gambit. It has ghostly voices shimmering across the beats with a menacing low end, rugged bassline and scaring percussive sounds. ‘#5’ is another fresh sound with great sound designs and alluring rhythms and last of all is ‘Drum Trax’ which is a third and final blend of nostalgic and futuristic house tropes for heady basements.

JG Outsider – Despierto LP [CT184]

After a long period of inactivity, during which he recharged his batteries for his return to music production, JG Outsider took up the challenge of recording his first solo album in this new phase of his musical career. EBM, industrial sounds, post-punk songs with his own vocals and high-level collaborations make up this work. It is undoubtedly a musically mature album that shows the identity of this chameleon-like artist with a career spanning more than 30 years. The album also includes great remixes by Nightcrawler Music and Spammerheads as well as a collaboration with Ruth García/From Hell.

Zona Utopica Garantita – Tanz Minimal [MYTRA004]

Fourth release for Mystic Transfers with the alternative group Zona Utopica Garantita ”ZUG” with an EP based on the single ”Tanz Minimal”, an infernal circle dotted with minimal wave shadows and rhythmic rustles that convey into a well-defined space in time. Accompanied by the versions of Gropina, which faithfully reflects the elegance and style, Toulose Low Trax’s dubby version with kraut rock reminiscences and ultimately a hypnotic version native to the dark world of headacheaday. ZUG’s music is a marriage between the machine-gunned punk of CCCP and the Body Music of the teutonic DAF, with his own poetry and experimental attitude.
