Jeff Mills – Exhibisionist 2 [AXDV004]

11 years after the release of Exhibitionist, Jeff Mills reveals the follow-up to his innovative film with Exhibitionist 2. Exhibitionist 2 explores DJing as an art form and gives us a peak into how a DJ makes use of current technological means to create seamless mixes and complex transitions to levels that were thought impossible not long ago. In this second volume, Jeff Mills goes deeper and not only shows how he approaches the mixing process but also how he thinks in real time, spontaneously creating, just like a musician playing an acoustic instrument or a soloist thinking of rhythms on-the-fly. The ambitious project captures the DJ over the course of multiple sequences, with closeup and multi-angle shots that allow us to see exactly what a DJ does and how music is programmed and played for the purpose of dancing.

Santiago Salazar – Chicanismo [LWYFLP001]

It’s been a decade since Underground Resistance affiliate Santiago Salazar made his debut on Los Hermanos. Surprisingly, this double pack represents his first attempt releasing an album, though whether Chicanismo was intended to be a ‘proper’ full length is a moot point. There’s certainly plenty to enjoy, with Salazar melding his usual influences – deep house, Detroit techno, tech-house, Latin rhythms and dreamy, rave-era, breakbeat driven grooves – into a range of attractive, floor-friendly cuts. There’s naturally much to enjoy throughout, from the title track’s Motor City beats, heavy bass and swirling pads, to the bumpin’ tribal rhythms and mangled tropical bird noises of ”UKB to LAX”.

Simoncino – Amazon Atlantis [CRLP012]

Simoncino is back with another full length album, Amazon Atlantis, on Creme Organization. His vintage sound is one full of real emotion, and that is the case with this new full length. Simoncio turns on his machines and makes music every day, just for pleasure. Every so often he feels the time is right to release a new collection of material, and that time is now. There is no objective or particular message behind the album, it was simply conjured up using the Akai S 900 and the Emu Emax I drum machines as well as a Roland JX8P, a Korg PolySix a Ensoniq ESQ1 and a Yamaha DX7. Made at different times over an extended period of time in his home studio in Perugia, Italy, the album features two collaborations. The first is with Legowelt, “who besides being one of my favourite artists is a close friend” and the other is with Vincent Floyd, “a true legend whose records ‘Cruising and ‘I Dream You’ have left their mark on my life.”

Chevel – Blurse [SALP003]

Chevel (a.k.a. Dario Tronchin) now makes his LP debut for Stroboscopic Artefacts. Over the course of his young career, Chevel has gained a mastery over several compositional elements: Polaroid-like slow melodic fades, sharp ricocheting beats, and simply making one’s headphones feel like a viable means of physical transportation. Despite Chevel’s keeping the sonic toolkit and overall atmosphere consistent from track to track, there is a rich variety in the emotional affectivity on display here. The net effect is like a dream state that leaves strong impressions even though one can’t pinpoint exactly why they are doing so.

Jonas Reinhardt – Palace Savant [FUR097]

Helping listeners to escape reality—which has been known to grate, on occasion—has long been a noble aim of many musicians. One of the most effective ways to do that is to create imaginary soundtracks for impossible science-fiction films, the darker and more un-Hollywood-like, the better. Another method is to take inspiration from great works of architecture—which, as Goethe cogently noted, “is frozen music.” The latter route is used by Brooklyn producer Jonas Reinhardt (aka Jesse Reiner) on his sixth album, Palace Savant.

Benjamin Damage – Obsidian [50WEAPONCD018]

‘Obsidian’ marks the third album from Benjamin Damage (his second solo long-player). “Obsidian is a collection of fragmented memories from all the music I’ve ever liked, distorted and restructured into a full length techno record. A purely personal project and an end of an era with 50WEAPONS.”

Shoc Corridor – Experiments in Incest [DE100]

SHOC CORRIDOR - Experiments In Incest

Dark Entries Records reissuesthe LP ‘Experiments in Incest’ from the  80s UK-based Minimal Synth band Shoc Corridor. The founders of this project, Chris Davis and Israel-born Nogi Prass, who eventually had to leave the band because there were problems with her Visa, started making music in 1979, influenced by German electronic bands Kraftwerk, Neu! and recent developments in UK Post Punk like Public Image Ltd., and formed a band, adding by Paul O’Carroll, Paul Humphries and Andy Garnham to the line-up. The departure of Nogi and Chris, who left with her, from the UK in late 1982 made it virtually impossible to continue with Shoc Corridor, but despite that, they released two LPs in 1983 and 1984 (Experiments in Incest and Train of Events). The band eventually disbanded after the suicide of bass player Paul Humphries following the release of Train of Events.

Liquid G – Liquidation [DE099]

“Liquidation” is the first ever vinyl compilation of Liquid G.’s cassette recordings, taking you on a journey through the underground of the Belgian Electro Industrial scene. Each song was written, produced, recorded and performed by solely by Peter Van Bogaert between 1987-1989. Liquid G. captures the DIY synth-punk ethos of Cabaret Voltaire, The Screamers, and Nervous Gender. Six of the eleven songs on the album are instrumentals, and full of disturbing drum machines, stratified synthesizers, and deep, distorted bass-lines. The core of Liquid G.’s home studio included the Korg Poly-800, Roland TR-505, Roland MT-32, and Boss flanger and delays.

Tomo Akikawabaya – The Invitation of The Dead [MW060]

Minimal Wave announce an exquisite double LP release by obscure Japanese artist Tomo Akikawabaya entitled The Invitation of The Dead. The collection of songs include the entirety of both The Castle (1984) and Anju (1985) releases, all newly remastered. They sound fresher and stronger than ever before, exactly as the artist had intended them to sound when he recorded them 30 years ago. The songs that span this double LP are personal and unique; they are dark synthpop gems.

Las’s Crime – Mesmerique [DOM025]

Lord Arthur Savile’s Crime, or simply known as L.A.S.’s Crime around the digging circles, were an Italian cold wave duo who formed at the tail-end of 1984 and produced a timeless bunch of EP’s and LP’s which have become heavily sought after in the last few years. Luckily, Spain’s excellent Domestica label have herein compiled the very best from the duo, an eleven track showcase of the band’s top productions from the years between 1985 and 1989. As you’d expect, the bulk of the compilation is made up of fast-paced drum machines patters glazed in the era’s melancholic sound, where winding, lonesome vocals glide and wash over the Kraftwerk-style beats. There are even bursts of early electro within, such as the gnarly “Five Lies”, and more experimental moments like “Dark Orris” or the EBM-charged “Flax Girl Room”.

Vagon Brei – The Pleasure Of Finding Things Out [PF010]

Vagon Brei, aka Victor Ramos is back with a full length CD album on Photic Fields. A project inspired by and dedicated to Richard Feynman: the scientist, the teacher, the explorer, the visionary and the raconteur. His scientific curiosity, zest for life and eccentric personality were tried to be captured in music, produced by a true admirer of the man. A varied set of tracks, among the album you’ll find mystic waves, ambient moods, synth soundtracks and electro cuts. ‘It’s much more interesting to live not knowing than to have answers which might be wrong’.

After his contribution for Dial’s 15 Years compilation and almost two years of production, it is here: Dj Richard – Grind ! INIT – Two Pole Resonance [HVNLP001]

Having first joined forces last year to lend a hand of Massimo Pagliara’s collaborative With One Another full-length, Benedikt Frey and Nadia D’Alo present their debut full-length under the Init alias. It’s a thoroughly atmospheric, clandestine affair, with the duo delivering a dark-wave opus that tips a hat to early Depeche Mode, minimal wave, Detroit techno and the ambient soundscapes of Brian Eno. D’Alo provides the vocals, though for much of the time they’re utilized as textures, rather than the central focus of the duo’s shuffling, slowly evolving synth-scapes. As an album, Two Pole Resonance is initially attractive – albeit in a stylized, late night kind of way – but really comes into its’ own after repeat listens. It is, though, definitely worth the effort.

Mr.G – Night On The Town? [PGSEXLP1]

The G man returns to his Phoenix G home with a somewhat special album release. Where the usual Mr.G sound is still present on this LP, ‘Night On The Town’ showcases G’s more adventurous works and exposes some of his more exotic influences. African Rhythm sections, hints to EBM and low tempo chugs make this album very actual yet unique.

Helena Hauff – Discreet Desires [WDNT014]

Golden Pudel’s DJ-turned-producer, Helena Hauff, returns to Actress’s Werkdiscs with her debut LP. Compared to her last effort for the label and her banger of an EP on Lux, Discreet Desires spans across much vaster landscapes, and while we knew that she was heavily into Detroit electro, the album is heavily focused on fast, broken beats brimming with synths. “Spur” and “Funereal Morality”, for example, are a pair of Drexcyian bombshells, while “Piece Of Pleasure” clearly takes inspiration from Kraftwerk and the resulting synth pop wave. Instead, “Silver Sands & Boxes Of Mould” showcases her more experimental side thanks to its cinematic soundscapes and sparse beats, along with the beatless sway of “Dreams In Color”. A fine debut LP that cements Hauff’s position at the vanguard of current electronics.
