Series-A – Evolution Technology [DE126]

Series-A was the duo of Sam Anderson aka DJ Maestro and Dave Webb aka Kid Fresh. Sam and Dave both grew up listening to the sounds of the Electrifying Mojo on WJLB in Detroit. They met in 1983 at a DJ gig that they were both hired to play. In 1986, they collaborated on the Nu-Sound II Crew project. After developing a friendship with Juan Atkins, they became hip to the emerging new club sounds that were to become electro and techno. Their subsequent project, Series-A, was named after different car model numbers, but also hints at the evolution of humankind into a new species. In 1987, Series-A recorded the single “Evolution ? Technology” at Spectrum Sounds Studio in St. Clair Shores, Michigan. Their set up was a vocoder, E-mu Emulator III, Roland 909 drum machine, and an Otari 24-Track recorder. They landed a record deal with Satellite Records in Burbank, California, which had been founded by Pete Moore of The Miracles. After pressing 50 promotional copies, the label ran into financial problems, and the record never reached a full release. Taking cues Kraftwerk, Grand Master DST, Grandmaster Flash & Jam Master Jay, Series-A created dark electro beats in an era when sampling appeared to be the future of music. Lyrically the song addresses our species’ entry into the technological age. For this EP reissue, the 7” Mix and Dub Mix are included on the A-side. On the flip is a new remix by prolific Ann Arbor producer JTC, an alias of Tadd Mullinix (aka Dabrye, SK-1, & Charles Manier). JTC speeds up and expands the song to seven minutes. Drawing on influences from Ron Hardy to Jeff Mills, he drives around suburban techno landscapes while simultaneously launching the listener into deep space.

Andrew Red Hand – Inspiring Memories EP [DUAO002]

a2567833094_16

Andrew Red Hand is someone who wears his influences well, turning in an EP full of the kind of sharp beats and wiggly electro funk that fits neatly within the Detroit ouevre, while still allowing him to explore his own emotional center as a native Romanian. Like many who found a connection with Detroit, he is far from it physically, but he has found his strength in the sound, fusing a fierce bassline with a tightly woven melody in “Fugitive For One Night”, while adding a quirky hopefulness to “Bass Agenda 86.” “VIP Club on Acid” heads straight for the dancefloor and the acid, minimal in construction and driven only by snappy snares. “ER” changes up the angle with a heavy kick and restrained percussion driving tense pads, hot string stabs, and a dripping acid line.

Der Zyklus – Renormalon [WEME31312]

Renormalon is a collaborative effort between Elena Sizova, Heinrich Mueller: music data and Dr Olga Karelkina: visual data + encoding. Its purpose technically is to visually and sonically communicate the renormalon physics principle. Each composition is separate component of the theory representing a particular phenomenon in the realm of quantum uncertainty. The observer is to be immersed conceptually and hopefully will experience discrete states of energy which is integral in atomic behavior.

Jeremiah R – Echoes From The Dark Ocean [DW001]

Jeremiah R has been responsible for some of the finest electro to be released over the past few years. Here he launches the Distant Wave label with eight more chunks of atmospheric, far-sighted futurism. As usual, he flits between ambient style interludes and more expansive dancefloor fare. In the latter category you’ll find the Motor City techno futurism of “Bermuda Triangle”, the glistening IDM loveliness of “Streaming To Arcadia”, the Larry Heard-in-space deepness of “Cruiser”, and the Drexciyan throb of “JAR (Jamming Avoidance Response)”. All are, naturally, both luscious and pleasingly melodious, whilst retaining an intergalactic sense of atmosphere.

Telkhin – Poseidon Wave EP [SHIP033]

From the depths of the dark net come Telkhin, the latest addition to the Shipwrec roster. The Argentine project is debuting on vinyl with five tracks of off-world electronics. The chilling atmospherics of “Body Container” meet the needle before an electro iciness takes hold. Spiking snares and echoed radiowaves orbit the moody “Walk In”, that same frosted futurism central to “Level Above Human”. Telkhin melts man and machine, giving the computer age a humanoid form. Processors whirr in the bassy bleeps and residues of “Brithomber” before the final statement. Leaving the human world behind “Flight 19” is a fast and future funk driven piece of 2050 music.

Annie Hall – Tenured Positions [CPU00011100]

Annie Hall taking a break from co-running Detroit Underground to make an appearance on like minded Sheffield label Central Processing Unit. Annie dedicates this E.P. to women in science (Marie Curie, Lise Meitner, Elizabeth Arden and Caroline Herschel) when tenured positions for women working in the field were extremely rare. Although the tracks appear to be straight from the science lab, don’t let that fool you as each track is brimming with laid back computer funk with subtle melodies that keep you hooked. Annie has deviated from her signature fractured beats and delivered an easy listening electro affair that’s equally at home on the dancefloor as it is chilling in high fidelity.

ITPDWIP – Anachronism EP [FR033]

“An anachronism is a chronological inconsistency in some arrangement, especially a juxtaposition of person(s), events, objects, or customs from different periods of time. The most common type of anachronism is an object misplaced in time, but it may be a verbal expression, a technology, a philosophical idea, a musical style, a material/textile, a plant or animal, a custom or anything else associated with a particular period in time so that it is incorrect to place it outside its proper temporal domain”. Frustrated Funk welcomes Heinz Kammler’s Teleportation Process Detected While In Progress [ITPDWIP] project to it’s roster.

Zwischenwelt – Paranormale Aktivitat [CAL007LP]

Zwischenwelt is a project combining the talents of former Drexciya member Heinrich Mueller, New York DJ and producer Susana Correia, Spanish producer Penelope Martin and vocalist Beta Evers. This is the first vinyl edition of this special project. A well executed audio-visual experience playing with the tension between machine and human vox. Musically rooted in the early 90’s lab-electro style that has been presented as Gesamtkuntwerk, further conceptualized and developed into an even more abstract but not any less powerful or less intense experience. Cold voices sonically merging with emotional machine sounds (or is it cold machine sounds merging with emotive vocal sounds?).

Gnork presents DJ Shark – Space Beach [UTTU058]

Unknown To The Unknown’s early ’90s inspirations are well documented, with boss man DJ Haus frequently signing and releasing tracks that doff a cap to ghetto-house, acid, Belgian techno and early British hardcore. Despite this history, Gnork’s “Space Beach” feels surprisingly fresh. Described, somewhat matter-or-factly, as “jungle techno”, the title track does a brilliant job combining booming, skittish, energy-packed early jungle rhythms with the kind of spacey melodies and chords that you’d expect to find on vintage Detroit techno records. Flipside “Double Sunset” jettisons the Motor City inspirations in favour of a more straight up, bass-heavy early jungle flex, with rich dub bass enhancing the mood.

DJ Stingray 313 – Communications System [BAR005]

Sherard Ingram aka DJ Stingray 313 for this fifth Barba release hits us with elegant but typically fast pacing modern electro 3 tracker. Each one is a beauty in itself, deep, resonating space funk, elegant yet dark at times but melodic in the same time as one would expect from the man. Simply put – truly outstanding craftsmanship across all tracks. Title track also gets a remix treatment by Aubrey, UK seasoned techno dj, producer and label owner who’s recent remix seen a light on legendary Metroplex label earlier this year. Enough said. Here Aubrey bravely bites the bullet and maintains the original high tempo but seriously twists the original resulting in stomping into stratosphere monster track creating his own communication system.

Clarence G – Hyperspace Sound Lab [CAL006]

Before his untimely death in 2002, Drexciya member James Stinson recorded a number of killer solo records. Hyperspace Soundlab, initially released in 1991 and credited to Clarence G, is undoubtedly one of his best. It’s long been something of an in-demand gem, with copies changing hands for several hundred pounds. Here, Clone have done us all a favour and given it a much-needed reissue via their Aqualung series dedicated to all things Drexciyan. As you’d perhaps expect, all four tracks explore the Detroit elecro sound Stinson did much to develop, with the producer adding his own rap vocals to the killer “Clarence G’s Club”, and the ghetto-influenced bounce of “Cause I Said It Right”. Elsewhere, “Turbine” is an exercise in industrial-tinged drum machine abuse, while “Data Transfer” sees Stinson doffing a cap to classic Chicago acid.

GE OLOGY feat MARK DE CLIVE LOWE - Moon Circuitry

The latest Sound Signature release comes from one-time conscious hip-hop producer GE-OLOGY and one-time go-to jazz keys-man Mark De Clive-Lowe. The latter’s brilliant synthesizer and piano work is arguably the highlight of both tracks here. On the spacey, P-funk influenced space-house swing of “Moon Circuitry” he does his best impression of Herbie Hancock, while “Escape On The Lodge Freeway” boasts intricate jazz solos atop a slightly tougher, chunkier deep house groove.

Der Zyklus – Axonometric EP [VF173]

Legendary electronic pioneer Gerald Donald of Dopplereffekt and Drexciya returns with an incredible four track EP under his Der Zyklus guise. It is fair to say Donald is an electro pioneer, godfather and leading figure in electronic music. The Detroit artist, who took inspiration from the likes of Kraftwerk and Yellow Magic Orchestra went on to form his own uniquely experimental sound and would inspire a generation of techno and electro producers with his boundary pushing attitude.
