Donor / Truss – Aber [MRECLTDGS005]

Cover art - Donor / Truss: Aber

Despite the watery divide between them, Brooklyn-bound Greg Schappert and London-based Tom Russell have fostered a production partnership as Donor / Truss for the last six years, emerging today as one of technos more robust and hardworking duos. For Grey Series 05 they don the Donor / Truss moniker once again after a spell apart, proving themselves as accomplished and unpredictable as ever with the fully formed ‘Aber’. On the A-side swampy techno is bruised with house in “Spacial”, turning soupy on the sluggish and barely rippling “Beneath”. Fidgety “Ease” then does an about turn on the B-side before plunging headlong into swollen substrata stuff on the close.

VA – Polar Inertia Remixed [DM3D005]

DEMENT3D Records presents : Polar Inertia Remixed // DM3D005 The story may be quite standard, nevertheless, we feel this record is really special. Last year, in Paris, among all the promoters that made this kind of ”techno riot” happen, there was ”The Only Way Out.”. It’s been found guilty for Silent Servant’s and Abdulla Rashim’s first appearances in the french capital. We’ve had the honour of sharing these line ups with them, finally getting in touch, and starting conversations that ultimately ended up being a record : dedicated to remixing Polar Inertia’s first two ”EP-sodes”. So that’s it, ”Major Axis” has been handled by Silent Servant, ”Black Sun” transfigured by Abdulla Rashim, and our in-house champion Francois X has made a very special treatment to ”The Last Vehicle”. We are positively thrilled about this one.

Mr. G – Retrospective [REKIDS012]

MR G - Retrospective

Illuminating compilation of trax from stalwart London producer Colin McBean, spanning a decade and half. The man himself talks of his “soulful, twisted low-end funk sound” and he’s right on the money: his productions have found fans in disparate factions of the underground, from the afterparty tech-house set to the UK bass upstarts, via the deeper house heads. Long before he began his association with Rekids, the label behind this compilation, G was rolling out gold on his own Phoenix G and labels like Defected, Duty Free, Shuffled, End, Tag and Careless, under such aliases as The Reaver, Mango Boy and Halcyon Daze. For this 21-track comp he’s selected his own highlights from this vast body of work, and it’s effectively the most potent cache of secret weapons that a DJ could hope to stumble upon this year. Of the Mr G-assigned cuts pay special heed to the bass-licked warehouse thump of ‘Hear Me Out’, the jazzwise tribalism of ‘Jet Black’, the priapic boogie-tech of ‘Shelter (Unreleased Version)’ and the headier Detroit stylings of ‘G’s Strings’, while the lockstep discoid bounce of The Reaver’s ‘Mmmm’ and Mango Boy’s sickly minimal, psychedelic ‘Potion’ also impress.

Mental Model – Bipolar EP [MNTLTRX301]

From the deepest and blackest moments to the highest emotion in a rush. Pure 808 and 303 inductions turn your stereo into a dark vacuum which soakes you into a state where you will find yourself distracted from reality. On the B side we let our passion for a good rave go

Neinzer – And Again [YUME001]

Fresh new UK label with two killer tracks that will turn some heads. Amazing piece of house music that is working like madd without using the standard cliche’s. A accomplishment by this young producer Neinzer in these days of ‘looking back’! Opening with a funked up track that goes somewhere between things we know from Shake and Recloose but comparing it to others isn’t doing the track any justice. Flip side cranks the tempo up and gives a mad techno piece with some sample trickery

Shxcxchcxsh – Strgths [AVNLP001]

Cover art - Shxcxchcxsh: Strgths

The enigmatic SHXCXCHCXSH introduced their unique understanding of industrial-leaning techno to Avian with last year’s 12-inch Rjrjrffrjrj. Now Avian announce the Swedish duo’s first full-length album. STRGTHS features 7 scuffed, throbbing industrial tracks. Initiated by the drones of SLVRBBL, the openers’ atmospherics soon give way to the more direct, beat-driven LTTLWLF. RSRRCTN brings dubbier elements into play before leading into LVNGWTR’s searing melody and acidic dynamics. PCTSTSS accelerates up to the record’s zenith, before descending back into the darkness for the cold steel rhythms of WHTLGHT. Closer LLDTMPS evolves over the course of its near-12 minute running time to move from unsettling, disorienting tension to a warmer, contemplative climax.

Staffan Linzatti – The Biggest Mistake [SIGHTS004]

LINZATTI, Staffan - The Biggest Mistake

At the edge of failure a door to greater understanding and discovery is sometimes opened. Some of mankind ?s greatest discoveries and experiences took place by sheer coincidence or even by mistake. From the Big Bang, to Penicillin, or the “invisible light” we call x-rays, chance and human error has played a big part of our history and evolution as a species – can we really afford to be perfect when we owe our mistakes and weaknesses so much?

Staffan Linzatti – View From The Collapsing Centre [BALANS011]

LINZATTI, Staffan - View From The Collapsing Centre

Swedish futurist Staffan Linzatti has joined ranks with BALANS and he delivers 4 transmissions of alienating techno. Bleeps, haunting strings and off course 909 drummachines going mental. His work has always sounded unpredictable, brooding, dark and seem to follow musical rules from another realm. It’s as if these 4 tracks are delivered to us from a wormhole from the other side of the galaxy.

Hiss : 1292 – Aetherius Society EP [DM3D006]

Cover art - Hiss 1292: Aetherius Society EP

It was all unplanned : the duo even got its name after this first record got its mastering. Hiss : 1292’s Aetherius Society EP is a powerful and passionate statement. The creative frenzy of two talented producers – one from Switzerland ’12”, the other one from the Parisian suburbs ’92? – stuck together in a studio in Geneva, just a couple meters away from the roaring noise of a construction site. They’ve been putting computers out of the picture, jamming on their machines, synths and effects, and thus creating both forward-thinking and retrofuturistic pieces of techno, with that special “instant classic” feel.

Nina Kraviz – Best Friend (DVS1 Remixes) [REKIDS073]

KRAVIZ, Nina - Best Friend

Next up in the line of Nina Kraviz tracks to get a facelift is the sparse and eerie ‘Best Friend’. Enlisting the vocal services of his fellow Minneapolis-dwelling musician Naughty Wood, DVS1 has produced two excellent remixes.

Breaker 1 2 – Breakin [FP002]

https://imagescdn.juno.co.uk/300/CS498380-01A-MED.jpg

Forbidden Planet launched in fine fashion last month, securing some original material from Nation and Creme artist D’Marc Cantu that was complemented well by an accompanying remix from DVS-1. The Montreal label demonstrate they are equally capable of uncovering unheralded talent with this second release from the rather search engine unfriendly Breaker 1 2. Allegedly hailing from Florida, Breaker 1 2 seems inspired to use the same lo fi house template of his fellow North American contemporaries but take it to a much weirder place. Lead track “2” is the straightest production here, despite the unpredictable hi hats that skitter throughout and it doesn’t quite prepare for where Breaker 1 2 goes on the flip. The synth tone that roars into action on “DMT” is an unexpected delight whilst “Estonia” mutates swiftly from hazy insouciance into full on dark room techno.
