VA – Beats On Wax EP [GO012]
Gladio Operations launches its twelfth release, where the Spanish label returns to the various artists format. Opening the pack is producer and Distrito 91 label owner Fabio Vinuesa. Under his newly created alias Protocolo Sysex, he gives us “NottheFuture,” a powerful track with raw bass lines — a benchmark for the dancefloor. On the same side, we encounter Sinitsin. The Russian artist, who debuts on the label, leaves his mark with “Thinking Machine”. A track that reveals his enthusiasm for charismatic and effective melodies, very well sequenced throughout the track. The B-side opens up by an acquaintance of the label, Jauzas the Shining. This time he is accompanied by Foreign Sequence, and together they have created “Enter the Body”. A track of dark aesthetics, served with dramatic vocals, very characteristic of the Frenchman who, of course, never disappoints. Another artist making his debut is Italian producer Teslasonic. This fast-paced track titled “Chubby Bee” reveals a minimalist bass line, with subtle and delicate touches of the 303. The EP is brought to a close by another Gladio acquaintance. Igors Vorobjovs returns with this track titled “For One”. Orientated towards IDM sounds, the Latvian producer once again envelops us with a passage of deep and mysterious harmonies, which undoubtedly makes it a timeless piece.

Apnea welcomes VC-118A to the label for the first time with his next album ‘Back To Life’. Across nine tracks on two 12”s, he delivers a potent mix of deep electronics, acid bleeps, mechanically crafted rhythms, and atmospheric dub infusions–pulling the listener into a hypnotic, meditative space. Driven by futuristic machine grooves and evolving textures, Back To Life moves between fluid, weightless passages and tightly constructed sequences, balancing structure with deep immersion. Each track unfolds with intention, guiding through shifting sonic landscapes that blur the line between motion and stillness.

Keith Tucker Aka DJ K-1 comes back with his original minimalistic electro style with vocals and vocoder loveliness. The EP harkens back to his original K-1 Agenda ep days of the classic Direct Beat label which spawned the first of Tuckers many aliases. Tucker takes this first original mix into a more Kraftwerking style with his infections and Unforgettable vocoder work. DMX Krew’s Ed Upton takes his stab at a more sample bass mix in step with Tuckers seminal work In the Detroit Techno Bass group Aux88.

MCMLXV might be on your radar for its quality output in the realms of dub techno. This time out though it veers more towards club tackle and is less heavy on the dub via the work of label head JS Zeiter. ‘Outline’ stars in a deep, pensive groove with glistening hi-hats cutting up the smooth bass. ‘Taken’ is another mid-tempo plodder that comes alive with nice heady synth curlicues that add some scale. ‘Navigate’ keeps these serene vibes flowing with more deft and wispy pads colouring the rooted beats and ‘Resistance’ shuts down with more swaggering bass.

Ron Trent – Lift Off LP [RHMC006]
Arriving almost 35 years since he wowed the world with his game-changing debut, the Afterlife EP, Lift Off was inspired by Trent’s desire to ‘let the imagination speak for itself’ while exploring the diverse influences that have shaped his unique musical perspective. A departure from his previous album, 2022’s downtempo masterpiece as Warm, What Do The Stars Say To You, the 10-track set features a mixture of epic instrumentals, inspired collaborations and vocal cuts whose music was written with certain singers in mind. While it features music that ripples with the experienced producer’s familiar aural trademarks – rich rhythms, warm chords, impeccable instrumentation, inspired arrangements, and lashings of heady hand percussion – it also consciously explores a variety of sounds and tempos, in the process blurring the lines between dance music’s past, present and future. It’s a vision, in his words, of what dance music can become.
