50 releases in under four years is no mean feat, so a round of applause to Unknown to the Unknown who surpass the landmark with a new record from Legowelt. The superbly named Immensity Of Cosmic Space arrives hot on the heels of Legowelt’s fine Vaporware Tracks record for Creme and sees the Dutchman exploring the realm of rave era breakbeat techno. Of course what makes Danny Wolfers work as Legowelt so distinctive his mastery of star gazing melodies and hearing them fused with recycled drum breaks on the title track and the Amen filled “Lumeria2” is a real delight.

The in-house label from Glasgow’s Rubadub has been an infrequent affair characterised by a sense of the unpredictable thus far. A third release arrives and it’s from a source much closer to home in Sparky, aka veteran Glasgow producer Dave Clark. The two track Tapes 12″ is an unfussy affair, arriving as a stamped white label and brandishing some archival productions from Clark’s mid ’90s output. If you like your techno deep and fizzy you will cherish A side track “94Archive2/8” whilst the accompanying production veers off into tracky yet transcendental territory.

By his own prolific standards, veteran deep house/techno producer Ramon Lisandro Quezada – better known since 2005 as DJ Qu – has been rather quiet of late. Several bases are covered on the Redtones EP. Contrast, for example, the drifting, sci-fi chords and dense, deep house goes tribal rhythms of the title track, with the picturesque pianos and crackly samples of downtempo bonus “Sadness In The Static”. Best of all, though, is “Sweaty”, a formidably wonky fusion of psychedelic electronics, trippy effects and throbbing, grime encrusted house beats.

The new release from Perseus Traxx ‘Dr Burisch’ on Crimes of the Future, is a four track soundtrack to some forgotten alien abduction documentary… maybe. Starting off with ‘Rainy Tuesday’ and its skipping pitch shift melodies, and followed by ‘Lotus Protocol’ and its almost Richard D. hook. On the flip we have the title track, slow and building, very much the ‘theme’ of the piece. The EP finishes with ‘Electrical Surge’, and its static crackle of radio interference and damaged power lines.

Happy Skull’s first release of 2015 comes from UK based artist Creta Kano. He showcases his highly melodious and deeply textured sound across three tracks for the Bristol imprint. ‘Skyway Motel’ is an emotive, Detroit inspired amalgamation of warm chords and rolling drum machine rhythms. The track’s romantic qualities are emphasised on ‘Skyway 81’, a screwed, pitched-down version that re-casts the original as a serotonin fuelled slow jam. ‘False Water’ completes the package. A sprawling trip in to broken techno territory, reminiscent of 90’s era Rephlex.’

With one track as Robert Hood and the other under his Floorplan alias we certainly get the best of both worlds. ‘Shaker’ immerses you in those late-night moments when Robert graces the decks. It’s pulsating and hypnotic; stripped-back to the essentials. The beats, the groove, the perfectly placed vocal snippet – nothing is superfluous here. Robert’s Floorplan touch is all over ‘Ritual’. Astro:Dynamics start off 2015 with a collaborative LP from Berlin-based Ben Thomas aka BNJMN and Portland, Oregon-dwelling Kevin Palmer aka Best Available Technology. This collaborative album is a document of a musical dialogue between the two artists that has been ongoing for a number of years. The passing back and forth of ideas and snippets in the pursuit of feedback gradually grew into a body of work that eloquently moulds each artist’s sonic palettes and approaches – harking back to Thomas’ previous cross-atlantic collaborative work with Brainfeeder’s Teebs under his earlier Jackhigh handle.

Z Records returns with another humdinger of a compilation to start 2015. Supafunkanova Volume 2 has been selected by Joey Negro and Sean P. The dynamic duo continue to dig deep, compiling high quality albums filled with lesser known disco and boogie releases. Supafunkanova focuses on the funkier end of the 70s & 80s, showcasing some of the bumpier grooves recorded in the disco era when even James Brown had to take notice of the Saturday Night Fever inspired disco explosion. The duo have been working on Volume Two for some time now as the first instalment was released way back in 2007. It takes a while to put these albums together, tracking down the owners of these musical gems, finding the right image for the sleeve and so forth but it’s finally come together.

Johnny Hammond – Gears [M9062]

Top quality remastered reissue of one of the holy grails of the Jazz Funk scene, the incredible Gears LP by organ player Johnny Hammond. Originally released in 1975, this masterpiece is considered to be possibly the finest moment from legendary production and arrangement team the Mizell Brothers and its easy to see why as this wonderful LP just oozes timeless perfection with every track. Boundary breakers at the time, they all manage to still sound as fresh as ever. Standouts include the awesome Loft classic Los Conquistadores Chocolates, a psychedelic sweaty floor-filling dancer which hit big at Ron Hardys Chicago Music Box as well as in NYC; Shifting Gears a seriously funky breaks and block party anthem with all the right ingredients which was heavily sampled in hip hop during the 80s and 90s; plus Fantasy a big DJ Rahaan favourite and the sublime jazz funk groove of Tell Me What To Do.
