TM404 – Svans EP [KM030]

TM404 is a project where Andreas Tilliander embarks on a conceptual journey through classic Roland machinery. On the A-side of the Svans EP you can clearly hear the connection to Richie and his Plastikman project. The track 303/303/303/606/606 is heavy, slow grooving techno that brings the listener back to the dark emptiness of the Plastikman Consumed era. On the b-side the TM404 project is allowed elevated to new levels. With a Yamaha SY-1 and a Yamaha TG33 entering the machine park, TM404 for the first time, breaks his Roland oath and opens up the project to a future of new possibilities.

Move D – The KM20 Tapes (1992 -1996) [OMRKM201]

Having launched Off Minor Recordings with some of his own refined solo material under the Cry Baby J moniker, Jordan Czamanski adopts a more archival tone for the label’s second release, digging into the unreleased early nineties works of Move D. Recorded at his KM20 Studio in hometown Heidelberg (hence the name) The KM20 Tapes feel all too appropriate for contemporary analysis, drawing on a smudged and improvised approach to analogue electronics. The rugged drawn out acid of “Ovi Riese” in particular bangs the box in a degraded manner that is most pleasing. Excitingly, this is the first of an irregular series of archival material from Moufang on Off Minor with Czamanski apparently sitting on a tonne of tracks.

L/F/D/M – Purple Maps [OT001]

Having established Optimo Music as a truly eclectic label more than worthy of the Optimo (Espacio) night it grew out of, JD Twitch and co. expand operations with the launch of the club specific Optimo Trax label. The all encompassing approach of Optimo Music remains the driving force behind this new offshoot, with the label apparently taking in both current artists and excavated “forgotten classics” and it’s with the former that they launch. Little is yet to be known about the London producer L/F/D/M, credited as R. Smith, who was apparently encouraged to pursue music production while studying art with Factory Floor’s man on electronics, Dominic Butler. Taking Butler’s advice, L/F/D/M delivers a strong five track of EP of deep, analogue-fueled acid techno which simultaneously draws upon the influences of the motor and windy cities, while also incorporating the more sinister strands of European techno.

Acid house curmudgeons Killekill have unveiled Hyperfocus, Alex Cortex’s fifth EP for the Berlin label-conglomerate since he launched it in 2011 as one half of Bad Cop Bad Cop. Hyperfocus’ two originals blend acid house and gritty techno with Killekill’s ironic rave aesthetic, while a sleek-yet-beat-down Skudge remix muscles up the B-side for some extra eye candy.

A brand new label split between Stockholm and York, homes of the two artists on this first release. Despite the label name, this is far from being the final chapter, simply the beginning of a new collaboration to push raw club tracks and machine tones inspired by Chicago House and Detroit Techno.

The Glasgow-based label Clan Destine Records with the second release in the series Clan Destine Traxx. Optimo Music’s Golden Teacher are heavily involved, contributing a track in “Cedar Eels” that feels like an extension of their polyrhythmic endeavours for JD Twitch’s label. In addition some of the band appears under the Tropic Of Capricorn banner with the straight up acid techno banger “Helen Gilgrist” whilst Stefen Blomeier might just steal the show with the K’ed up Daphni stylings of “They Have No Place In Paradise”.

DUNGEON ACID/RON HARDLY/TORN HAWK/TUFF SHERM/WORKER/PARASITE - Dark Acid

After a catalogue of experimental, industrial and band-related releases, the Clan Destine label moves into techno with Dark Acid. The first release is a five track mini-album opened by the cagey Chicagoan bass and Marcel Duchamp-referencing Detroitisms of Dungeon Acid’s “Nude Descending A Staircase”. Sharing the two-track A-side is the “Subway Antlers” by the unknown cheek of Ron Hardly, featuring some ’90s house percussion and a melody that sounds distinctly like the Doctor Who theme. Torn Hawk introduces some charged gothic techno with his Fast Throne mix of “Black Rain”, while Tuff Sherm opts for a minimal and slow ghetto house approach in “Idle Engines”. Recent One Eyed Jacks remixer Worker/Parasite brings the mini-album its most lieral representation of ‘dark acid’ by drenching the 303 workout that is “Angkar Loeu” in heavy reverb.

The second comp on Holland’s 030303 shows the beauty, depth and variety of the Roland TB-303 more than ever in the history of the label. Moving away from IDM and braindance this time, all that’s presented to you is gorgeous dancefloor mayhem with great personality. Contributions by Elec Pt.1, Jonny 3 Snares, Automatic Tasty, Cosmic Force and Dexter all have a classic yet leftfield feel to it. About half of the 10 tracks diverge a little from this excellent recipe. Roy of the Ravers’ track ‘Acid Hors d’Oevre’ stands out for it melodic raving ecstacy; the track may well be the main hit of the Bangface-style rave community this year. Further down the line, Kid Machine’s ‘Mirage’ brings impressive synth-wave-disco madness on a distinctive 80s tip – this one is for fans of Legowelt. Then Jared Wilson’s cut – amazingly – brings us back to the time we first heard Choice’s ‘Acid Eiffel’: classic stuff that will never bore the ones who feel it. Another BIG one is for Drvg Cvltvre who delivers some down-to-midtempo sickness, distantly reminiscing of 33 1/3’s ‘Searchin”, but then on acid.
